LAGNIAPPE First Sunday of Lent

February 22, 2015

Dear Friends,

When I was a child, Lent meant giving up something, usually candy or the like. I was not one to eat a lot of candy so Lent was experienced more as a “time of the year” than as a “time of sacrifice.” I did notice that we did not eat meat on Fridays, which bothered me more, as I didn’t like tuna fish. It was only as I grew older into life that I began to notice more of Lent’s draw and complexities. It’s easy to fool oneself in considering Lent: that it is a wink and a nod process where giving up ends up giving in to whatever one has “sacrificed.” Or that Lenten Fridays are not so bad because, “heck we live in Louisiana” and seafood is more than tuna fish. The season of Lent evolved from the Catechumenal experience, a period of purification prior to one receiving the Easter sacraments. Gradually this concept moved from the unbaptized to all in the Church for 6 weeks. What is to happen?? It’s less what we are doing, and more what God is doing for us: melting hardened hearts, and views and behaviors. It’s less focused on the “I” in “what I am giving up” and more focused on the “giving”. It is a season of moving outward, towards others in charity. The end in mind for Lent is to open up a space in one’s experience of life so that a person notices what is out of control, out of balance, what is not of the Good Spirit-and then having the courage to take on the challenge of over-coming the self seeking freedom and peace. This weekend, we are sending a number of adults and children Catechumens and Candidates, for Full Communion and Full Initiation, to the Cathedral to celebrate with Bishop Muench; to join people from every parish in the diocese to participate in the Rite of Election and The Call to Continuing Conversion. These folks will be “elected” to the Table of the Eucharist at Easter.

Monday Nights of Lent have begun from 6:00-7:00pm Confessions in Church. The Deanery Reconciliation Service will be at SJV March 17th, 7:00pm. Sr. Renee Daigle will offer a Lenten Retreat Day Saturday, March 14th. There will be a Father Daughter [Grandfather- Granddaughter] dance in Fr. Engels Hall Saturday, February 28th.

Blessed week ahead……

Love,

We extend our sympathy to the following parishioners who recently lost a loved one:

VOCATION In today's Gospel, people have difficulty believing that Jesus can forgive sins. Through the sacrament of reconciliation we have a powerful sign of God's mercy, understanding, and forgiveness for those who are sorry for the sinfulness of their lives. A priest becomes God's minister to visibly assure those seeking forgiveness that God's mercy is theirs. If you think God is calling you to a Church vocation, call or email Father Matt Dupré at 225.336.8778, [email protected], or visit, www.diobr.org/vocations

Gator Bites from St. Jean Vianney Catholic School

Thank You to Our 4-H and Art Clubs: The 4-H and Art Clubs have been working together these last few months to help beautify our campus! 4-H built bird houses, and then donated them to the school. The

Art Club then painted the houses and they were recently hung all over our campus! Thanks for your hard work! Catholic Schools and Red Ribbon Week: St. Jean Vianney School celebrated Catholic Schools Week and Red Ribbon Week, January 26 – 30. Each day students were invited to participate in special activities, such as wearing hats for “Hats off to Catholic Schools” or wearing crazy colored socks to show their uniqueness of attending a Catholic school. Students enjoyed showing their school spirit, while committing to Catholic schools and a healthy, safe, and drug free life. Throughout the week the children were also asked to bring in different laundry items to replenish the supply at Catholic Charities. Thank You, Men’s Club!: The SJV Men’s Club did some valuable work on our campus on January 24th and 25th. They hung more blinds in the two story building, as well as removed the copier from under the stairwell. Special thanks to Jeff Brown, Paul Guarisco, Ronnie Hoffer, Roy Drez, Bill Simpson, Joey Indest, and Mike Farr. The club plans to hang blinds in the library next.

Congratulations Dr. Kevin Andry: Congratulations to SJV Band Director, Dr. Kevin "Doc" Andry! Dr. Andry teaches daily band classes before school to students in grades 4 through

8. He also works full time as the St. Michael’s the Archangel High School Band Director. He was recently named the Secondary Teacher of Year, not only for the Diocese of Baton Rouge, but at the national level as well! Congratulations on your accomplishments!
