Evelyn Underhill once said that Lent is a time for spiritual stocktaking. It is a forty-day season of intentional reflection and contemplation to consider where we stand with God and God’s mission through the disciplines and practices of prayer, fasting, sacrifice, service, and worship.

Lent is a season of self-examination.

In a culture where criticism and critique of the “other” easily flows through social media, water coolers, cafeterias, and even family dinner tables, Lent invites us to abandon the impulse to take stock of someone else’s life, someone else’s commitment, or someone else’s choices. Instead, we take stock of our own lives, our own commitment, and our own choices. We engage in honest talk about ourselves and consider where we have fallen short in our principal vocation: to love God, love our neighbors, and love ourselves. Lent stops us in our tracks to turn the reflection inward. To paraphrase Leo Tolstoy, the most important advice I could give for this season of Lent is to say: “In the name of God, stop for a moment, cease your work, and look at yourself.”

Lent is a season of awareness.

One of the staple texts of the Lenten season comes from the pen of the Psalmist in the fifty-first Psalm: “For I know my transgressions and my sin is ever before me.” The writer, David, is cognizant and mindful of the reality of his sin. He knows he has broken the heart of God by what he has done and by what he has left undone. He knows he has stirred division and dissonance in the community. He knows that which has been done in secret still has consequences in both private and public spaces. He knows his transgressions and his sin can be found in plain sight. The season of Lent calls us to this kind of awareness. It calls us to this kind of candid and authentic self-examination.

Examine. Be aware. Be honest. Take stock.

And journey on…

WHIZ KIDS TUTORING MINISTRY NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

Are you interested in making a positive difference in the life of a child? The Whiz Kids Tutoring Min-istry needs additional volunteers to tutor elemen-tary school students in math or reading. Tutoring takes place on Wednesday afternoons from 2:15 to 3:45 at Snapfinger Elementary School which is located at 1365 Snapfinger Road in Deca-tur. If you are interested, or if you know anyone who is interested in tutoring a student in math or reading, please contact Granvette Matthews, the Whiz Kids Coordinator, at 404.228.7747 or at [email protected]. Volunteering just one hour per week can help make a significant difference in the academic life of a child who needs to develop basic math or reading skills.
