A Word from Pastor Mike

What is your favorite holiday in the

month of February? Maybe you don’t

think of holidays when it comes to this

month, but there are some important

ones. You might be tired of all the

snow and ice this Winter and looking

forward to February 2nd and Ground

Hog Day when a sign comes that Win-

ter may be winding down. It seems

that for most of my life the groundhog

has always seen his shadow and we

experience six more weeks of Winter.

For many persons living in the USA,

Super Bowl Sunday, has become a

national holiday. This year it also hap-

pens to fall on February 3rd. Gather-

ings of family and friends are common

to watch the game (or maybe focus on

the commercials) while sharing lots of

food and conversation. I must admit

that I am not nearly as enthusiastic

about watching professional football

as I used to be now that we know

about all the serious brain injuries that

so many players have suffered. How-

ever, it is fascinating that a sporting

event can capture the attention of so

many people and bring them together

to share the experience.

Patriotic Americans may point to

February 18 as we celebrate Presi-

dents’ Day as one of their favorite holi-

days. Cynics correctly remind us that

often this day is used primarily as a

tool to stimulate commerce, but there

is something valuable about remem-

bering the birthdays of presidents. We

honor George Washington as the fa-

ther of our country and a beloved

leader who set the pattern for other

presidents to follow. Those of us who

live in Illinois are inspired by the life of

Abraham Lincoln who helped put an

end to slavery and unified our nation

when it was in danger of being torn

apart.

For the romantic at heart, Valen-

tine’s Day on February 14, may be

your favorite holiday of the month. We

celebrate by sending cards, giving

candy and flowers and going out to

dinner with loved ones. It is a remind-

er how important it is to show others

how much we love them.

For Christians, love is our highest

virtue and a central focus of our lives.

We are able to love because God

loves us unconditionally and desires to

be in relationship with us. God gave

us the perfect example of love in Je-

sus Christ. Jesus loved by being pre-

sent, by teaching, by healing and sac-

rificing his life for others. I encourage

you to follow his example and focus

on ways to express love daily with

your words and actions.

From the Pastor’s Desk. . .

Dear Friends and Members of Cary UMC: Greetings to you all in the holy name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! With the economy improving, all over the commercial world, there are huge prepara-tions to sell Valentine gifts! I hope you are in the spirit to celebrate this wonderful festi-val of love which originated in the history of the Christian church. However, the word “love” has made its way into the hearts of many people, without the meaning of love in the Christian sense. Let it be so! God loves every human being in the way that even Christians sometime do not understand the depths of this amazing love. But they cer-tainly enjoy the blessings of God’s love eve-ry day. I trust that you are enjoying God’s love. The key to live in God’s love is keep our faith fresh and sparkling in God’s be-loved Son! Those of us who make efforts to live by faith, need to learn to live in in a special love, I call it ‘relational love.’ Without rela-tionship with others, love cannot be prac-ticed. It remains a theory only. Yes, it is true that our actions are not always in harmony with our relationship to our loved ones, yet our loved ones do not discard us. What a comfort to know this truth. However we are called to know a larger truth, that from time to time, we still think and do of wrong things we live with the con-sequences of our thoughts and words, as well as in our deeds. We even brag about what we can do!! Deep inside we know that on our own, with our own strength, we can-not understand the true meaning of love. The Good News is that God does not reject us because of what we have done. God loves us because, “God is Love.” He has a plan for each of our lives. He wants to conform you to a life of holiness. Even when you and I are not doing as much as God wants us to do or doing more than our

strength allows us to do, God keeps on lov-ing us and encouraging us: “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of My hand.

John 10:27-28 As you prepare yourself for festivities of the Valentine Day this year, pray to the heavenly Father to help you be saved from relying only on your own achievements, ac-tivities and emotional love but fully rely upon the love which comes from your relation-ship with God and our neighbors, in Jesus Christ. I want to add a word of thank you to eve-ryone for your appreciation and support. I wish I could do more. However, your love keeps me faithful to my calling. My wife and I are grateful to you for your prayers and continued love. Please call me at my per-sonal cell phone 847-220-1300 for your Pastoral care needs. We Are All Connected with Love!

Feed My Starving Children

When: Saturday, February 23 from 2 - 4 pm. We will meet at the church in the Narthex and caravan to the FMSC site in Libertyville. Every day, 6,200 children die from starvation but we can make a difference for these children by volunteering at Feed My Starving Children. FMSC’s volunteer program of-fers us the opportunity to share the love of Christ and see firsthand the difference we can make in response to Christ’s call to feed the hungry. We will be packing meals that will be shipped to children that need it.

Food Pantry Volunteer Opportunities

After a CaryGrove Pantry board meeting this week, we were discussing the on-going Government Shut Down. Many government employees are hurting financially. The Pantry wants our neighbors who find themselves in this position to come to the Pantry for help. We are open 3 days a week as follows: Tuesdays 4 - 6 pm, Thursdays 4 - 6 pm and the 1st, 2nd & 3rd Saturdays 9 am - 11 am. Food Pantry is located in the St. Barna-bas Church parking lot, 8901 Algonquin Road, in Cary.

Also, something to consider for church members, volunteer to work in the food pantry helping people shop or stocking shelves, picking up food from local vendors or becom-ing a volunteer board member representing your church and community. Call the church if you are interested.

Music is such a wonderful way to

give Glory to God. The music of the

Gospel should continue to be heard

and become integrated into our daily

lives. Music inspires our hearts and

others to dream and opens our eyes

and the people around us to see the

life that the Lord calls all of us to live

to the fullest. We are called to be his

disciples in this world. This month our

music selections for the Chancel

Choir will concentrate on our calling.

We will help spread “A Little Love”

as we sing Natalie Sleeth’s choral se-

lection. Be ready to lift your hearts

as we sing praise with “All Creatures

of Our God and King . . .O Praise

Him”! Dave and Jean Perry, retired

music instructors, arranged a musical

setting of this famous text by Francis

of Assisi. They are both involved in

the music ministry at First United

Methodist Church in Mesa where they

currently reside.

pm in the Sanctuary. We have a

wealth of talent for which we are

grateful to God for, and we recognize

we have a responsibility to share this

weekly schedules! Read on...We

welcome instrumental, vocal, solos,

duos, trios. I would be happy to ac-

company anyone who would need it

on piano. All you must do is come see

after 8:30 am or before 11 am on

Sunday and tell me what you are in-

terested in. When scheduled, I will

rehearse with you ahead of time.

Cary UMW Annual Rummage Sale

Rummage Sale is March 7 - 9; donations drop off is March 3. Start your spring cleaning early! Cary UMW will hold its annual rummage sale from Thursday, March 7 through Saturday, March 9. Donation drop off starts at 12:15 pm, Sunday, March 3. Volunteers are needed to sort and price donated items, to check out shoppers and to tidy the tables. For more information or to volunteer, contact Glenda Arnold. Proceeds of the sales go to UMW Giving and the Cary UMC Kitchen Fund.

Donations Need for College Care Ministry’s Packages Donations are needed for the College Care Ministry’s Valentine care packages, which are mailed to students who have been or are active Cary UMC church members and are en-rolled in a college undergraduate program. Suggested items are: microwave popcorn, granola bars, gum, candy, hot cocoa mix, water flavor packets, snack crackers and cook-ies, mini muffins, Tic-Tacs, tape, Post-It notes, highlighters, and colored pens. Please no dental items and NO LIQUIDS. Food items should be INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED. An average of 17 packages are shipped. A donations box will be in the church lobby January 6-February 10. Collecting to Repurpose

Here are opportunities to collect items to be repurposed. United Methodist Women are always helping others, so we reach out to you to help also. Help is ongoing, so bring items on last Sunday of the month.

1-Unwanted crayons, almost new or broken or used, to go to S.C.A.R.C.E.- for Crystal Lake to peel on February 10. 2-Square plastic closure tabs from bread bags, put in closed bag-for a project. 3-Grocery or store bags, fold in half the long way, put all in one bag-for plarn being knit into ground protectors for the homeless. 4-Clean plastic prescription bottles, no labels-for use in Haiti to dispense medicines. 5-Clean plastic bottle caps, no metal- for a church building plastic benches. 6-Coffee K-cup disposal is ongoing in the kitchen near the counter.

Home Builders Adult Sunday School Class

Our class is made up of both married and single adults who meet each Sunday for fel-

lowship, growth, and education. This is achieved through articles, books, and videos

that we find, review, and discuss. What we are trying to accomplish is to become better

persons, good and responsive parents, supportive friends, and have a stronger faith.

A case in point is a book that we read and discussed over a period of six weeks. The

book was called, Five Marks of a Methodist by Steve Harper. The author goes to the

very heart of faithfulness as he describes and then calls upon all those who follow John

Wesley's teachings to live accordingly.

It is lives of integrity that are the result of following these marks. The author rightly

says, “This will give the ring of truth to our daily living.” He then goes on to identify

the marks or practices that, when followed, will result in a life of righteousness, good-

ness, peace, and joy.

The five marks are:

1. A Methodist loves God.

2. A Methodist rejoices in God.

3. A Methodist gives thanks.

4. A Methodist prays constantly.

5. A Methodist loves others.

Our class has come out of this study with a greater knowledge and appreciation for why

and how we follow Jesus. This study provides a solid foundation made up of the five

marks which taken together are called personal character. Although we did this book as

a class, we recommend you read the book. Copies are available in the church office. Our

current book is called, The Three Hardest Words: In the World to Get Right by Leonard

Sweet.

Our class meets every Sunday at 9:45 am until 10:45 am room F off the general meeting

and food refreshment area. All are welcome to join us at any time.
