Dear Brother Knights,
It doesn’t always happen, I would even say that it happens rarely, that Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent, falls on St. Valentine’s day. But I think it is a great opportunity to remind all of us what to LOVE truly means. Why do I say this? Well… because we always attach to Lent the idea of giving up some-thing to prepare in the right way for Easter, and with St. Valentine’s day we attach the idea of love. It was the great St. Thomas Aquinas who defined love in the following way: to will and choose the good of the other. So to love implies that we are willing to get rid of our self-
ishness and to put the other first. Lent is a time that reminds us that we have to learn to die to ourselves which is precisely what we do when we have in mind the good of the other. What is truly at the root of all the problems of our world is selfishness and therefore truly a lack of love because it all becomes about what is “good” for me and not what is good for the other, whether that other be my neighbor or God. Therefore my dear brother Knights I would like on this very special Lent that starts on St. Valentine’s day for all of us to do something that will help us to become selfless people and of course at the end of the day to love truly God and our neighbor.
Blessings,
Fr. Jerry Zhanay
Brother Knights,
This February we are holding a Church Drive before all of
our Masses the weekend of February 17 and 18. This is the
perfect time to ask the man that sits in front or behind you
on Sunday if he is a member of the Knights of Columbus. If
he says no it is a great time to ask if he would like more in-
formation about the Knights. To qualify to be a Knight is easy; you must be
an 18+ year old male and a practicing Catholic. All I ask for is a name and
phone number so we can contact them ad let them know what we are about.
You don’t have to wait until February 17th or 18th, you could do it this week-
end. Many Knights when asked why it took them so long to join the Knights
of Columbus they say “nobody ever asked me.” It would be great if our coun-
cil could get a couple new Knights from this church drive. So ask your sons,
brothers, neighbors, and friends.

Grand Knight
The Blackhawk Knights of Columbus have or-
dered shirts and are selling them for $10 each.
The council is picking up the rest of the cost.
We got them before the Pork Chop Dinner and
it was nice to see so many Knights wearing
them while they worked their shift. We would
like all members working to have one. If you are
interested in purchasing a shirt please contact
Eric Breunig at (608) 963-0338. We also have
some leftovers from our Cow Chip Food Stand
in our council’s freezer. We are selling the left-
overs for half price. If you are interested in any
please contact Eric to see what is available.

Church Drive
On February 17th and 18th our council will be holding a church drive at all the masses. We will be working with the other councils in the district to try to get new members. We will be discussing this more at our February Meeting. Please plan to help at the mass that you go to that weekend by greeting everyone as they come in to church and ask the men of our par-ish if they are interested in learning more about the Knights of Columbus and get their contact information. We will hold a short informational meeting after Mass. Please plan to attend that as well because it is great to show potential Knights who we are.
Help Needed 40 Knight are needed for the Dioce-
san Knowledge and Free Throw Con-
test on March 3rd. Contact Eric
Breunig at (608) 963-3038 to sign up.
