FEBRUARY 2017
Message from Pastor Jay
Smile God loves you!
One of the first Christian bumper stickers or license plates I remember as a kid
was “Smile God loves you!” In fact, my grandmother may have had that on the
front of her car? I guess nowadays bumper stickers and license plates have given
way to Facebook posts, vanity plates, and many much cleverer ways of publicly
proclaiming our love of the Lord? I still remember being worried when Erin got
me my first PASTRJ license plate back in Pennsylvania. I was nervous that people
would judge me, and more importantly all pastors and Christians by my driving!
Ironically, it was Erin who came home from work one day telling a tale of road
rage that I had to remind was behind the wheel of the PASTRJ mobile! Today peo-
ple wear t-shirts, decorate their cars, and boldly post proclamations of faith online
all because someone invented a chrome fish for the car and a “Smile Jesus loves
you” bumper sticker.
I want to tell you about a new way that you can proclaim your love for the Lord!
It isn’t anything difficult or offensive. It won’t push you out of your comfort zone!
Best of all you might even enjoy doing it! I need you to shop! Yes, that’s right I
said, “Shop!” By shop I really do mean buy Christmas and birthday presents, es-
sentials you already buy, and all those things we don’t really need! Just shop. Have you ever purchased or received anything from Amazon.com? They are the
largest internet shopping company in the world. You can buy almost anything on
Amazon. Remember that bumper sticker? That’s all you must do is smile! In-
stead of going to Amazon.com you go to www.smile.amazon.com. Once you are
there you can log into your amazon account as you normally would. Then you
can indicate that Jamestown Presbyterian Church is your charity of choice and go
about your business. It is that simple! Guess what happens next? Amazon will
transfer .5% of your qualifying purchase to JPC! Tara and I have already set it up.
I even earned us $1 today purchasing motorcycle parts… I mean a gift for my
wife! Even if you already shop on Amazon Smile for another group or school I
would encourage you to consider splitting time between them and the church;
We will take December!
I know that I did all my Christmas shopping online. I imagine many of you do too.
Please take the extra step to SMILE for JPC. Tara will be keeping track of the
money. The Session will best decide its use. I promise to keep you updated on
how much we raise. This is free money folks! Let’s all smile that God loves us
and smile that we love and serve Him through JPC!
See you in church! Pastor Jay

Blood Drive May 24th
Did you know that it takes less than one hour to donate enough blood to save
three lives? Volunteering to get blood is giving the gift of life to patients who need transfusions.
The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive at JPC on May 24th 2:30 pm - 7:00 pm in
the Fellowship Hall.
There will be hamburgers and hotdogs served at the picnic shelter during the blood drive.
As the date draws closer, we will send out steps on how you can sign up along with
any additional information.
We will also need volunteers to help with refreshments, signing donors in
and assist those giving blood.
SO MARK YOUR CALENDARS and imagine the difference you can make in such a short time!!

Easter Egg Hunt Calling all toddlers through Elementary age children. The annual JPC Easter Egg Hunt is set for Saturday April 15th at 11:00. If it rains we will still be good to go in the CLC. Hope to see everyone there!
Got Candy? We need some candy for the eggs: If you would like to donate some bags of candy for the Easter Egg Hunt, please bring them to Pastor Newton. We need small individually wrapped candy.
Get those Palm Waves Ready Sunday April 9th is Palm Sunday and we will be waving the palms at both services. The children will lead and will be singing at both services as well.
What do you believe?
During the season of Lent 3 different groups have been walking through the Apos-tles Creed. The church often has it’s own vocabulary and we can find ourselves re-citing words we don’t understand. I encourage you to go deeper, to articulate what it is that you believe. A great starting place is to ask yourself or to engage around the dinner table or at Sunday lunch with friends. What do I believe about God, about Jesus, about the Holy Spirit? What is church? I would love to hear from you with a sentence or 2 about each of these questions. Email or write me, or stop by and tell me. When you being to understand more about what you believe then you grow closer to God and I also believe it provides an opportunity for you to share with others about what God means to you. The great-est evangelist this church has is you. I want to thank you all for being the church for me over this past week. Losing a parent is never easy, and I greatly appreciate the calls, cards, texts and hallway con-versations. This church knows how to care for people. Grace and Peace, Pastor Newton
OUTREACH NEWS
Outreach would like to say thank you to all who made our auction a success! Many hands helped with this wonderful turnout. It was an amazing evening– we had so many people come to eat, bid on items, play corn hole and watch the game on the overhead– that we actually had to add tables to accommodate all of the people! The words “thank you” don’t seem to be enough to express our gratitude! To all who donated items, baked goods, cooked chili, collected money, helped with set up, designed our flyer and our invitation, thank you from the bottom of my heart! Without you this would not have been possible. Our goal was to have fellowship and raise
money for Outreach projects. Many of you took the jars that we had at the auction. Each jar has the phrase “be the change for Outreach” on it.
Please bring back the jars once they have been filled– once a month, once a week, or whenever your jars are full. We will have a jug at each service for the collection of money in the jars. Then bring home your jars, and start filling them again! I have my jar sitting by my sink. When I wash dishes, I see the phrase “be the change for Outreach.” It makes me think as I am doing some-
thing like doing dishes about the work of the church and how I can make a difference. Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice Hospitality. Romans 12:13 The jar is yours to keep– fill it with change for Outreach. Outreach will give back 10% of the col-
lected monies to Pennies for Hunger. Everyone wins!
Mission Trip Scholarship This month, Outreach was pleased to give a scholarship to one of our high school students to go on a mis-sion trip. Natalie Frontera will be going to Nicaragua with Youth for Christ this summer. We look for-ward to hearing from her and seeing pictures from this mission trip! Easter Food Boxes On Sunday, April 9th Outreach will be delivering our Easter food boxes between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Outreach needs assistance with getting these boxes to the families that rely on this food to feed their families during spring break. Please consider giving an hour of your day to this Outreach project to help families in need. Thank you!
Greensboro Urban Ministries Spring Food Drive The Outreach committee is helping with the Greensboro Urban Ministries Spring Food Drive. It is being held at the Food Lion in Jamestown on April 22nd, from 8 until 6. We need 12 people to volunteer for a 2 hour shift. We will be working in pairs. Children are encouraged to participate with the supervision of an adult. Please contact Lu Squires to sign up for this great event! Call 336-688-8830 (cell), [email protected] or [email protected]. Thank you!

Dear JPC Family,
As we begin a new chapter in our lives, Steve and I want to let you know how much
JPC has meant to our family. We leave Jamestown with mixed feelings. While we are
excited to be near our grandchildren, it is hard to leave our friends here. But we be-
lieve this is what God has planned for us.
We began our relationship with JPC in 1990 when David attended the preschool and
we joined the church in 1995. You welcomed us and kept your commitment to help
raise our children. You nurtured our boys through Sunday School, choir, youth group,
mission trips and employment (both boys worked for the afterschool program and
for many of our church members). Steve and I have both been honored to serve the
church as Elders and be a part of many different committees and groups. We have
been blessed and spoiled by our wonderful music program and will miss it greatly. I
had the pleasure of working for you in the office and I really enjoyed getting to see so
many of you during the week.
You have been with us in our highs and lows. You are more than friends, you are fam-
ily to us. We hope that if you are in the Raleigh area or on your way to the beach,
you will drop in to see us. We will enjoy a couple of weeks in Boone while our house
in Wendell is completed. We will send our new address when we move in. We will
keep our same email address and cell numbers.
We will miss you and wish the best for JPC.
Love,
Steve and Patty
