Dear Collector,

We have been sworn to secrecy about this issue for months, then one of his fan sites let the issue slip out, so we were told by Royal Mail that we could go ahead with our advertising, that was quite a busy morning.

Our trip to York went well and we bought some nice bits and pieces, Craig has a lovely cover (see below). We are now getting ready for Stampex, if this magazine arrives in time you may still have time to visit (14th – 17th February – Call us for more details).

For this magazine Sarah has put together a nice couple of pages of music signed covers and we also have the first Cover Lover pages from Vickie, the RAF 50th Anniversary of World War II series which we have not done in a while.

We are still trying hard to promote our clubs. Tony used an idea ‘Recommend a Friend’, where if one of your Friend’s became a club customer there were bonuses for both of you. Club customers will receive details of this re-vamped idea with the next main sending, but if you want details before, just drop us an email.

It seems strange to be offering new single high values

again, I remember the £1.41 Parcel Post that came out just after I started in stamps back in 1985, now we are up to a single £5 stamp. As then, the cylinder numbers have proved to be popular, but I guess putting barcodes on stamp sheets had not been thought about in the ‘olden’ days.

Finally I have been thinking what news from the office I can give you this month. I think you will have to ask Craig about his York Ghost Bus Tour! Also, congratulations to our three runners in the Folkestone Park Run last week with

• Jake 21:50 • Farai 28:06 • Clair 31:22

I had already volunteered as timekeeper that week so could not take part, but think I would have finished between Farai and Clair. I am looking forward to the re-match, as long as Clair promises not to get any faster.

Happy Collecting

BUCKINGHAM COVERS, SPECIALIST COVER EXPERT

A WORD FROM

BRIAN“At last we can mention the secret David Bowie issue and show you all our covers.”

We have just bought a fantastic cover which has been carried on two classic transport icons. This cover was not only flown on the first USA to Germany flight of the zeppelin LZ 129 Hindenburg but also then carried on the maiden voyage of RMS Queen Mary from Southampton to New York. The cover features a flown cachet from the LZ 129 Hindenburg and several arrival stamps. This is a brilliant cover linked to two historic transport feats.

LZ 129 HindenburgLZ 129 Hindenburg was a German passenger airship named after Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, President of Germany from 1925 until his death in 1934. The airship was in service from March 1936 until it was destroyed on May 6th 1937 when it caught fire during an attempt to dock at the Naval Air Station in Lakehurst, New Jersey.

RMS Queen Mary RMS Queen Mary was an ocean liner built for Cunard-White Star Line. She sailed on her maiden voyage on May 27th 1936 and had achieved the Blue Riband by August; holding it for the majority of the next 15 years. During World War II she was converted into a troopship but returned to passenger services after the war. RMS Queen Mary departed Southampton on her final voyage on October 3 1st 1967 to the port of Long Beach, California, where she remains moored to this day.

A TRIBUTE TO ‘STARMAN’ DAVID BOWIEMusic Giants II - 14th March 2017

The cover features our special Heddon Street, London postmark - the location used on the front of Bowie’s

1972 album ‘Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’. Today there is a black plaque to Ziggy Stardust on the

wall at 23 Heddon Street.

Our miniature sheet covers feature a fantastic stardust image. Bowie’s iconic status is, in part, due to his ability to reinvent himself throughout his career. He is perhaps best remembered for his most stage persona ‘Ziggy Stardust’ - although he had earlier success, it was the Ziggy Stardust

Tour and album that catapulted him to stardom.

The album covers featured on the stamps are:

Gordon Campbell joined the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1900, and in 1917, by the age of 31, he had reached the rank of commander. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on 17 February 1917. Whilst commanding HMS Farnborough (Q.5) (one of the “mystery” Q ships) in the North Atlantic he sighted a torpedo track. He altered course and allowed the torpedo to hit. A ‘panic party’

got away convincingly, followed by the U-boat. When the submarine was within 100 yards of Q.5 the commander gave the order to fire, sinking the German U-Boat. Campbell sent a famous distress signal: “Q.5 slowly sinking respectfully wishes you goodbye.” Within an hour two British destroyers arrived to tow Q.5 to safety. Campbell remained on board with a volunteer skeleton crew to assist.

Campbell’s VC citation was deliberately vague: “In recognition of his conspicuous gallantry, consummate coolness, and skill in command of one of HM ships in action.” The vagueness backfired, as the press started referring to him as “The Mystery VC.” Two further acts in 1917 saw Campbell’s crew awarded with VCs, Campbell himself might have been awarded a second VC for either action but declined on both occasions; he was however awarded second bar to his DSO medal.

On the 20th March 2017 Dame Vera Lynn, ‘the Forces Sweetheart’ turns 100 years old. She has personally signed this beautiful cover

celebrating her centenary.

Alan Mathison Turing OBE FRS was an English computer scientist, mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and theoretical biologist. Highly influential in the development of theoretical computer science, he is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence.

During the Second World War, Turing worked for the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS) at Bletchley Park, Britain’s codebreaking centre. He devised a number of techniques for speeding the breaking of German ciphers, Turing played a pivotal role in cracking intercepted coded messages that enabled the Allies to defeat the Nazis in many crucial engagements, including the Battle of the Atlantic; it has been estimated that this work shortened the war in Europe by more than two years and saved over fourteen million lives.

Broad Gauge was pioneered in Britain by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the late 1830s for the Great Western Railway. A number of other new railway Companies adopted the specification, creating a network that spread across much of South West England and South Wales.

On the 1st March 1867, through trains from London Paddington to Penzance began running and included fast services such as the 10:15 Cornishman and 11:45 Flying Dutchman. Our cover, celebrating the 150th anniversary of these broad gauge services, features a stunning painting by Railway Artist John Wigston showing Brunel’s Royal Albert Bridge at Saltash.

1937 Coronation Rare illustrated covers

The 1937 Coronation of King George VI is a landmark issue in collecting First Day Covers, as for the first time dealers all over the country and commonwealth produced illustrated covers, everyone from a Printers in South Shields to Selfridges Department store. Well over 200 illustrations are known and ever since they have been very collectable, in fact some people collect nothing else. We like to think we have quite a good stock, with most just one or two available.

ON TOP OF THE WORLDSir Edmund Hillary was the first person confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. Hillary started mountaineering while still in secondary school, and went on to become one of the greatest mountaineers the world has ever seen. Hillary also trekked to the North and South Poles, making him one of a small number of elite explorers to reach the poles as well as stand atop Everest. After making history on Everest, Hillary founded the Himalaya Trust through which he devoted the rest of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal.

Sirdar Tenzing Norgay was a Sherpa mountaineer born in Nepal. He climbed Everest alongside Hillary, and they reached the summit together on May 29th 1953 at 11.30am. Earlier on in the expedition to Everest’s summit, Norgay saved Hillary from a near-miss when he fell into a crevasse - Norgay’s quick thinking secured Hillary’s rope thus preventing him from hitting the bottom. As a result, Hillary made Norgay his climbing partner of choice for the final ascent.

Lord John Hunt was a British army officer and is best known for leading the expedition to Everest in which Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the mountain’s summit for the first time in recorded history. As a child, Hunt spent much time in the Alps where he started developing his mountaineering skills. He continued climbing throughout adulthood, and when, in 1931, his military regiment was posted to India he began climbing various parts of the Himalayas. After WWII, in which Hunt achieved the rank of Colonel, he was chosen to lead the Everest expedition on account of his military leadership skills as well as his proven abilities at climbing. In later life he became the first Director for the Duke of Edinburgh awards, and in 1966 was awarded life peerage for his work with young people.

Edmund Hillary and John Hunt were knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and Norgay received the George Medal for his efforts.

Sir Edmund Hillary and Sirdar Tenzing Norgay, signed 1978 25th Anniversary of the First Ascent of Mount Everest FDC with a silver coin, supplied in a special presentation folder.

Spotlight OnThe First Commemorative Phosphor Issues - The Southampton T Slogan

These experimental issues were only available in certain areas. The main one being Southampton as they had the special sorting machine, which gives us the Southampton T slogan postmark.

These ran for nearly all issues between 1962 National Productivity Year and 1967 Flowers, over the last five years we have noticed they are all becoming much harder to find, and not just the early ones, we feel some of the later ones may be even harder to find, we list here what we have.

TUCKS WORLD WAR II POSTCARDSWe offer here a set of 14 different mint postcards featuring Wartime Leaders from postcard producer Tucks.

These include some stunning images including three great pictures of Churchill, a card featuring Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill meeting in Teheran and one of the main seven leaders of the Allied Armies.

Considering the poor quality of the card used, we guess they come from either during or just after World War II, they are in fantastic condition. The only other thing we can guess about them is they were produced for the Dutch market, as this seems to be the language used to describe ranks and people featured.

We have never seen or offered these before, but thought they would make a great addition to a military collection or even framed

1976 - 1988, most seem to be in good condition with special postmarks

1964 Shakespeare covers

Matching set of unaddressed 1964 Shakespeare covers, 12 from the Commonwealth and 1 GB cover. With this years issue, a nice little lot to add to your collection

50 Mercury single stamp covers which we think should make into sets, from the late 1990’s to early 2000’s, includes GB issues, the Submarines Prestige booklet and Liberia Planes. We don’t see very many of these and to get 50 together is hard

1999 Total Eclipse of the Sun1999 Total Eclipse of the Sun, collection of sixteen signed covers, signatures include Sir Martin Rees, Sir Bernard Lovell, Dr Patrick Moore and Sir Francis Graham Smith. We could split this lot up, but it always seems a shame, some good signatures

We don’t know how many covers make up a complete lot of these, but we think this is a good selection at a great price

15 Signed Concorde Nairobi 75

Maritime Signed coversFive 1969 Maritime signed covers, two first day and three Cutty Sark, with 18 signatures from people connected. These must have been done at the time and have the details of the signatures either inside or typed on the back, very unusual

Postmarks on plain covers

£35 per month over 4 months

Collection of 33 postmarks on plain covers produced by leading philatelist and postmark collector George King. We are a fan of his covers and many do need further research to find out why he did them.

Concorde collection of 88 covers, plus phone cards, mint stamps, photos and even a photograph signed by Mike Bannister. From very early covers through to the British Airways flown one, still in their original album, not sure you would find a phone box to use the cards now

COLLECTIONSCOMPENDIUM11 Key Phosphor FDC

Mini collection of the 11 Key phosphor FDC issued between 1962 - 64. All good condition, includes Southampton T on NPY, special

slogan on Freedom from Hunger and Bureau on Compac.

Royal House EnvelopesCollection of 14 covers from around 1910 - 1922. They all to be in official Royal House Envelopes to a Mrs Hammond thanking her for her Birthday greetings to members of the Royal Family. It gives an interesting selection of rare cachets and headed paper from various houses.

Scotsman British Rail Series

Through the history of cover collecting, there are certain dealers who changed the ways that covers were collected. In the ield of railway covers, that person

was Colin Williams, and the series was his British Railway (BR) series, sometimes referred to as Scotsman covers. There were railway thematic covers before that, but his was the first numbered series covering important events and anniversaries. After the ‘baton’ was passed to the Benham railway series and now the Buckingham

series. The British Rail series started in 1973 and ran till 1978, the numbered series goes from No 1 to 50, but there are a few varieties, so we say a standard collection is 60 covers. These are as popular today as they were 40 years ago, and completing a collection is hard. We have looked at our stock and we think we can supply around 10 complete collections. If bought from us individually they would cost over £650, but as a special offer we can offer them for £500, eg just over £8 per cover.

Benham Queen’s 60th Birthday

Benham 60th Birthday Collection of Her Majesty the Queen. Fifteen covers, limited edition of 500. Very rare

50 covers from 1973 - 1975

Over 50 covers from the period 1973 - 1975, with special postmarks but a rather large typed address, so priced very low to clear. Small selection shown here.

33 sets of maxi-cards (1966 - 1973), most with connected postmarks and seem to be in good condition, a great PHQ card forerunner collection. We are rarely able to offer complete lots of these, this lot has been with the same collector since they were collected as new issues, not to be missed.

Maxi Cards

1890 Jubilee1890 Jubilee, 5 covers and 1 card, includes 3 commercially used and 1 with three postmarks, but all grade II, hence low price.

Hi-De-Hi! Holidays in Bognor Regis

This is a lovely collection of 9 mixed First Day Covers issued between 1963 - 1965, all in great unaddressed condition but what we especially like is each was posted at the Post office in Butlins so has a Butlins Camp Bognor Regis CDS postmark. Most of them, as you expect, are from the summer months, as we guess then the camp was not open during the winter. We think it is more likely they were done by some-one working there rather than a visitor. A lovely set.

Maritime Collection

All of these I meant to list individually but I am up to my neck in work so it is a great buy for ship collectors. Covers retain a value each from £5 - £50, normal retail would price them at £250 - £300.

Early TCCB Collection, 100 Years of County Cricket, 18 full set official covers for the 1973 Cricket issue, no album but complete on the pages. Could either be kept like this as a collection or used to get signed.

MASSIVE LOT OF 130 BENHAM CAT COVERS, mostly issued between 1995 and 1999, offered here we think below the new issue price. These originally started with the idea to just do one set and then grew into a popular series with covers from all over the world

16 Pilgrim Royalty covers, mainly from the 1990’s, photo illustrations of the actual events, hard to find.

US Navy Station Norfolk, 8 ‘Welcome to Norfolk’ covers marking visits of foreign ships between 1957 - 1970, there may be more, but this is a great way to start a collection.

US Navy Station covers

Pilgrim Royalty covers

A collection of 43 Full set 1985 British Film Year FDC plus a few extras. We would normally have split this up for getting signatures, but this is far too good, including an amazing selection of connected CDS postmarks. These catalogue at over £650, if you could find them individually, but we think they should be kept together so priced to do this.

Collection of 34 cricket signatures on card, an ideal lot for mounting and framing, signatures include Ted Dexter, Mike Gatting, Gladstone Small and Stuart Broad to name a few. As an added bonus they all seem to be identified.

I recently produced a list of Rail collections and the following are just a few of those listed. If you have any questions about those listed below, just ask.

Collection of 70 first flight/airmail covers, would retail at £2000 if marked up individually

First Flight and Airmail CollectionWe’ve had an excellent collection come into the office comprising of an

assortment of first flight covers and airmails.

Included inside is one of the best selections of 1938 North Eastern Airways first flights I’ve seen for a long time, including five which have been signed by the pilot - Flight Officer Boitel Gill. On top of that there is a selection of 1933 Western Air

Express, 1933 Provincial Airways, 1934 Highland Airways, and 1934 Railways Air Services first flights, including one pilot signed from each airway.

Furthermore there are several illustrated Imperial Airways first flights including London - Rangoon, Calcutta - London, and London - Singapore. The oldest cover is from the UK Aerial Post in 1911 which flew from Hendon to Windsor, the postcard has the dark brown dye 2 illustration.

Finally there is a mixture of mint air mail labels including Western Air Express, GWR, Island Air Express, and the Portsmouth and South Seas Service.

I will put my hands up and say these should have gone to Sarah, but I did say I would like to list them first. I bought the biggest lot of Isle of Man Railway covers I had ever seen. Over 240 Isle of Man Train and Tram covers, which seem to start in 1971 and go through to 2014, with a large num-ber of more modern ones, may have been produced by M J Southall. Lots of nice postmarks and Railway Letter Stamps
