PRESIDENT’S REPORTBy Beni Barrett

1/12th of 2017 has already ended and I find myself wondering where the month slipped away. The TGHoA Health Fair, held Saturday the 14th, was a total success; new vendors were well received. Per the Manatee

Sheriff’s Department there are several scams circulating in the area, jury duty phone scam and an email about unpaid traffic citation scam……be alert and observant of your surroundings.

Our Annual Membership Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 23rd with the Meet & Greet starting at 6 PM. I have included a Limited Proxy in the newsletter for those members that are unable to attend on 2/23/17. Please complete the form and contact a board member to pick it up before the meeting date. Hope to see all members and others at this meeting.

Unapproved Minutes of the Annual Meeting February 10, 2016

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Isaac Yates. Pledge of Allegiance was given. Roll call of Directors Board members present were: President- Isaac Yates; Treasurer- Jim Staub, Director-at-Large- Bill Clauser, Secretary- Beni Barrett and Dianne Howington- Vice President. With 45 members present representing 36 households, and 66 Limited proxies, there are currently 134 members, these are sufficient numbers for a quorum. A motion was made to approve the February 11, 2015 minutes (previously posted and published); read by Beni, the motion was seconded and approved. Treasurer’s report was given by Jim Staub of the Profit & Loss for period ending December 31, 2015. A motion was made for approval of the report and seconded. Members appointed 3 nominees to the board for 2016; Jim Staub, Bill Clauser and Gail Trumbull. Comments from the Members:

Residents asked about the issue with the pool and when will BOD meet with owner. Isaac will get together and set up a meeting with owner ASAP. One main issue is when it can be done.

Residents commented that street signs were hard to see at night and maybe should be lowered. Additional reflection was also mentioned for street and signs.

It was mentioned that speeding has become the norm in our community; UPS, USPS etc. Please try to address directly with driver or office before taking further steps.

Resident asked if a “handicap” type button could be placed at front door as it is very hard to open.

Resident asked if clubhouse was approved as a legal tornado shelter. There is a roof issue so that is why it isn’t approved. Closest shelters will be posted in March HOA newsletter.

There being no further comments, the meeting was adjourned, and we proceeded with the monthly Board of Director’s Meeting.

A motion was made for approval of the report by Bill Clauser and seconded by Gail Trumbull. Motion carried unanimously. Committee Reports:

A) Statutory Committee: Beni Barrett, nothing to report. B) Acquisition Committee: Dianne Howington had nothing to report on acquisition. C) Membership Committee/Newsletter Distribution: Bill Clauser reported we have 84 paid members as of January 2017. D) FMO Committee: Dianne Howington had nothing to report as she was unable to make the meeting. E) Safety & Traffic Committee: Ron Howington reported that he could use some help on the neighborhood watch committee. With the help he now has, this would only be about one time every 6 weeks. He thanked those volunteers that have been doing a great job. Bill Clauser asked if we could get some light or reflectors on the turn in to enter The Gardens at Tiger Lily Dr. It is very dark there at night. Gail Trumbull questioned if Ron heard anything about a movable flashing speed sign. It will be checked into. Ron suggested we try to get the number of those trucks that are speeding so we can report them to the company they drive for. Due to the cold weather, we haven’t had too many walkers after dark. Things have been a little quiet in The Gardens at night. Ron suggested we have our April meeting a little earlier so our Canadian residents will be able to attend, as some of them leave to go back up North in April. E) Parrish Civic Association: Beni Barrett had no report. F) Refreshment Committee: Darcy Thing put on a great spread, as usual. Darcy will not be here in February, but will supply us with her

wonderful goodies in her absence.

Old Business:

(1) Health/Home Fair Information: Dianne Howington stated that she has 22 to 23 venders interested in participating, with the possibility of 5 more showing up. It was requested that we have a few volunteers to help set up the tables at 8:00 am. The Fair is scheduled from 10:00 until 1:00 pm. Dianne expects a nice turnout.

(2) The judges were very busy choosing the winners of the Christmas decorations and lamp post decorating contest. First place winners were Michael and Linda Dansberger at 122 Sunflower Dr. Second place was taken by James and Mary Patrick at 162 Palm Blvd. The Lamp Post award was won by Tom and Marilyn Karski for their Candy Cane design at 194 Tiger Lily Dr. All in all, The Gardens looked very festive and beautiful with all the decorations showing the Christmas spirit in our community.

New Business:

(1) There are only two people running for the board of directors this election period. Both Beni Barrett and Dianne Howington are running unopposed. Both candidates had a few words to say and are looking forward to the next two years. Secretary Gail Trumbull thanked the candidates for the great job they’ve done the past two years.

THE GARDENS NIGHT WATCH AND SAFETY COMMITTEEBy Ron Howington

Travel Tips:Will you be traveling on vacation this season? Before

you leave read these simple tips to make sure you have a relaxing and fraud free trip:

• Let us know – If you will be traveling to another state, or especially to another country, let bank and credit card company know to expect different activity on your credit card. Otherwise, it could be flagged as fraud and potentially result in your card being deactivated.

• Never keep more in your checking account than you will need – Checking accounts are more vulnerable to access from outside the country with a debit card. Keeping just the amount you need in your account creates a limit on how much a fraudster could take.

• Travel with more than one (active*) credit card – The trick here is to not carry them both in the same place. Keep one in your wallet and the second in another pocket or even the hotel safe. This way if one gets lost or stolen chances are the second one will still be safe. *Some institutions will deactivate a credit card for

inactivity. Make sure you keep your emergency card active by using it once a month or so.

• Be very aware of your surroundings – Airports in some countries are notorious fraudster havens and weary travelers unfamiliar with the language are their favorite target. Watch out for the use of card skimmers, pickpockets, and strangers offering to assist you.

• Fraudsters often travel in pairs – One will create a diversion (ask you for the time, for example) while the other quietly snatches the bag you placed on the floor next to you.

• Sign up for Visa Text Alerts – Some banks and savings institutions offer text alerts when there is any activity on your account. Check with your institution and see if they do this. It can alert you to a problem quickly and get you involved if there is anything that you did not authorize.Safe Travels!

JANUARY 2017 MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE REPORTBy Bill Clauser 941-981-5410

2017? You serious? Thought we just started 2016 and bam! It’s gone. According to my thermometer, winter is over and we have summer weather. Coming from PA. this should be the coldest part of the year? Now that most of our Canadian & northern state friends are back, membership continues to rise.

Let's continue in that trend and I'll order more membership cards from our printer.

Call me, or see me at Tues. morning coffee……I'm as close as your telephone.

TGHOA HEALTH FAIR 2017By Dianne Howington

The 2017 Health Fair was held January 14th and was received with great enthusiasm. We had several vendors who were able to conduct exams on site and recommend a follow-up or for people to see their own doctor. Many took advantage of this great offering.

Sam's club was represented and contributed snacks galore, as well as two beautiful blankets which were donated for our 30 minute prizes. TGHoA provided a great variety of sandwiches for all to enjoy. Walmart donated a $25 gift card. Publix who is a great neighbor to The Gardens donated a $25 gift card and our grand prize of $100. Also many vendors offered vouchers for several people.

While so many inside were gathering information, the Blood Mobile was busy accepting donations from those who give so willingly of themselves. Bless you good people.

With so much positive feedback we are looking forward to 2018 with many new ideas for our community.

I need to thank AnGela Reinhard of Community Events for all her hard work and suggestions that help this become a success. Also, my thanks and gratitude to the many volunteers and the entire board of TGHoA for having my back. Even more I thank all who attended and we hope to see you next year.

SOUTHEASTERN GUIDE DOGSBy Verna Lalk

Dear Friends, Can you believe that

Delsey has had her first birthday? Time flies when you’re learning to be a superhero! I thought you might enjoy seeing this recent photo of Delsey sent in by her puppy raiser.

Delsey has had a wonderful first year. She has been

mastering house manners and now that she is older, practicing basic obedience such as “sit”, “stay”, and “come” in environments with increasing distractions. She has been asked to walk on various surfaces, and demonstrate focus on her puppy raiser while training in public. It won’t be long before Delsey returns to Southeastern Guide Dogs campus for Freshman Orientation, to begin assessments and training with our certified trainers.

So eat a piece of cake in Delsey’s honor! And thank

you again for sponsoring Delsey. People like you make a world of difference for our dogs and the people who need them.

RECYCLE UPDATEBy Beni Barrett

After speaking with the driver of the Recycle truck I am passing along some information as a reminder for our returning and new residents. The driver stated that MOST residents are doing well on recycle day but some are placing their blue containers backwards at curbside. Please make sure the handle is pointed towards your home; not the street. He also recommends that your personal trash receptacle and recycle bins should be placed on opposite sides of your driveway. This will keep your trash receptacle from getting torn up when the recycle arm reaches for the big blue bin. Please verify what is or is not acceptable for recycling below.
