The Oregon Track & Field Officials Annual Dinner and Meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 18 at 6:00 pm in the Club Room at Autzen Stadium. All active and emeritus Ore-gon officials are invited to attend and should have received an email invitation and RSVP request.

If you did not receive an email, please con-tact [email protected] and you will be sent the invitation.

The annual dinner and meeting will feature information about the Oregon home meet season, the exciting post-meet season fea-turing the 2014 NCAA Championships, June 11-14, the USA Junior Championships, July 5-6, and the World Junior Championships, July 22-27, plus the other outstanding youth and masters events hosted at Hayward Field in 2014.

The annual dinner and meeting is also a time to celebrate our members and their out-standing contributions throughout the year. The meeting is an opportunity to welcome and educate new members to our ranks and it gives our officiating teams a chance to meet and go over the year ahead.

For more than five decades Oregon Track Club has recruited, oriented and trained offi-cials for UO and championship track and field meets at Hayward Field, as well as youth, high school and masters meets and the re-nowned Prefontaine Classic.

Business MembersFirst Call: We Gather For Our Annual Meetingby Erin Regali, OTC President

As we settled into Jan-uary I took the time to re-lax, rejuvenate and begin to think about the goals for the busy year ahead. Once spring arrives, we kick into full gear of achieving all our dreams and goals. For OTC, February represents a time to gather for our traditional Annual Meeting for our members. This year’s annual meeting will be held Tuesday, February 11 in the Club Room at Autzen Stadium.

Each year our Club meets as a membership for a wonderful evening of dinner to hear the latest Club news and what we have to look forward to in 2014. This year’s annual meet-ing will be a great evening of speakers from the Pre Classic, the University of Oregon Track and Field team, the OTC Elite program as well as TrackTown USA. A special presentation of the history of Oregon Track Club… a look back at the beginning days of our club and all that took place by so many loyal track and field enthusiasts. This history has made the Club what it is today and we have so much to be thankful for to all those who committed such volunteer time, dedication and passion to the sport and club.

As I prepare for 2014, I reflect back upon all the accomplishments of 2013 and those who made it all happen. Oregon Track Club repre-sents so many valuable things in our commu-nity and impacts so many age groups of peo-ple. This New Year brings us a renovated and improved Pre’s Trail, the Pre Classic in May, the 41st annual Butte to Butte, the summer’s All-Comers’ Meets and the Pre’s Trail Challenge in August, to name a few.

Oregon Track Club recognizes and appreci-

ates all our new and renewed members for this busy year ahead. As a club we are a very strong and viable organization in the track and field community. We always look forward to provid-ing support to the successful UO Track and Field program.

The OTC… It’s for Everyone!

2014 OTCM Annual Dinner

Ian Dobson: urges running community to work together to grow the sport

2014 Hayward Classic Sunday June 29th Newly elected OTC Masters President Mike Cahn an-nounced “Mark your calendars for Sunday, June 29th, for the Hayward Classic, one of the nation’s premier Masters Track and Field events.”

Featured Speaker Ian Dobson, center, with Mike Cahn, newly elected OTC Masters Preident, and Shivaun Black, past Preisdent, and director of the 2014 Hayward Classic.

Olympian Ian Dobson spoke at OTCM’s Annual Dinner. A native of Klamath Falls, Ian attended Stanford, where he worked with Vin Lananna and Mike Riley and won individual and team NCAA titles. He ran the 5000 meters for US at both the 2006 World Championships and 2008 Olympics, and he competed for OTC Elite from 2010 through 2012. Today, he is head coach and executive director of Team Run Eugene, and is an Assistant Coach for OTC Elite.

Ian would like to help make running a mainstream sport, one that is “cool, fun and marketable” with strong grassroots support.

He thinks running could take a hint from the local microbrewery businesses which work together, sharing experience, ideas and even equipment to promote their industry, doubling its size in 3 years. He urged all parts of the running community to similarly work together to share ideas and to promote the sport.

Sharon Gerl, John Altendorf take Top Performance of 2013

Sharon Gerl, 65, took the top spot in two of our three categories, earning top age-graded rank in Road Racing, with an age-graded 92.65% 5K run in 22:19. Sharon also topped the Track category, with her 6:30.30 mile earning an age-grading of 94.24%.

John Altendorf, 66, pole vaulted 3.88 meter (12 feet 8 inches) to earn a 103.40% age-grading, besting Harvey Lewellen’s 102.34% hammer throw in the Field Event category.

The club gave special recognition to the memory of Melanie Reske, number 4 on the Field Event Top Ten list, who passed away in October at age 92.

Next month, we will cover the full Top 10, All-American and related performances.

but look ahead to what promises to be the greatest single season of outdoor track and field ever staged in TrackTown USA.

Besides a compelling home schedule for the University of Oregon men’s and women’s teams at Historic Hayward Field, consider this lineup of coming attractions in 2014:

The OSAA state championships, the 40th annual OTC Prefontaine Classic, the NCAA Championships in the first of an eight-year run, the U.S. Junior Nationals, which serves as the selection meet for Team USA heading into the biggest event of them all – the IAAF World Junior Championships.

That should be enough to whet anyone’s appetite for world-class track and field this year.

The IAAF World Junior Championships, of course, will be held on U.S. soil for the first time ever, July 22-27. The six-day meet fea-tures competition between the world’s best track and field athletes age 19 and under.

We expect an estimated 1,600 athletes, plus 600 coaches and officials, representing about 170 nations from around the globe to attend this historic event.

This is a truly amazing opportunity to see the future Olympians and world champions compete in TrackTown USA and welcome them to the spiritual home of the sport in this country.

Tickets for the IAAF World Junior Champi-onships go on sale to the general public on February 13.

For details, including pricing for all-session passes and weekend passports, a full com-petition schedule and meet qualifying stan-dards, go online at Oregon14.com or Gotrack-townusa.com.

On the same day, you can also purchase tickets for the upcoming UO track and field

season, the Pre Clas-sic and NCAA Cham-pionships. Details and dates for those events can be found online at goducks.com and pre-classic.com.

Connecting today’s youth with the stars of tomorrow will be an ongoing theme this year.

Just last month, we launched the Track-Town USA Youth Challenge.

Under this initiative, boys and girls age 12 and under who sign up and run one mile, will receive a voucher good for one free single-day youth ticket and one free adult single-day ticket to the World Junior Championships.

Finally, our first TrackTown Tuesday event of 2014 will be held on February 25 at the Downtown Athletic Club. Doors open at 6:00 pm and the one-hour show starts at 7:00 pm.

We’ll have some special guests, provide a recap of the UO cross country season and take an early peek at the Ducks and Oregon Track Club Elite athletes competing indoors.

We hope you will continue to show your incredible support for the sport of track and field in this community by purchasing tick-ets to as many events as possible and at-tending TrackTown Tuesday on Feb. 25.

Of equal importance, we ask for your help in introducing new fans to our sport by bring-ing them to Hayward Field and allowing them to experience a packed house of the most passionate track and field fans in America cheering for athletes from around the world.

In this way, we will be able to carry on with our mission of enhancing the sport in this country and reaching our goal of having the capability to bid for the ultimate prize – the IAAF World Championships.

The IAAF World Junior Champi-onships is still months away (July 22-27 in Eugene) but the positive cultural and financial ripple effect of the six-day event has already begun.

British Athletics announced recently that it has elected to host its training camp at Oregon State University in advance of this summer’s World Junior Championships.

After site visits to many ven-ues in the state in early Novem-ber, the national governing body for athlet-ics in the United Kingdom selected Oregon State. The state-of-the-art Whyte Track and Field Center will be the location Brit-ish athletes will use in preparation for the global event.

“We’re delighted to be able to prepare for

the World Junior Championships at Oregon State,” British Athlet-ics Team Leader Jo Jennings said. “Having visited the campus, I was very impressed with the excellent facilities and the enthusiasm and helpfulness of the staff. I’m cer-tain that this setting will give our

athletes the best chance to finalize their preparations for the championships.”

The final British team will be announced on July 8, 2014. The team will consist of athlet-

ics who are 19, 18 and 17 years old. British Athletics’ policy does not allow 15 and 16 year-old athletes to compete on the team regardless of their times or marks.
