An excerpt from the January BIR caught my eye, so I thought I share it again in case you missed it!
TOP SMALL BUSINESS TRENDS FOR 2014 Technology is leading the way for top small business trends of the year ahead.
THE SMALL BUSINESS DIGITAL DIVIDE WIDENS: A growing body of research is showing a performance gap between small businesses that successfully use technology and those that don’t. This digital divide means small firms unable or unwilling to deploy and use technology — and especially cloud, analytics and mobile technologies — are increasingly disadvantaged relative to their more technically savvy competitors.
IT’S A VISUAL WORLD: As cameras have become ubiquitous on mobile phones, apps like Vine and Instagram are making consumers familiar with taking, posting and viewing pictures and short-form videos. This is leading to an explosion of visual imagery and storytelling as firms use sites like Pinterest and YouTube to display goods and services and tell stories both in static and dynamic forms.
NETWORKED ORGANIZATIONS: Today’s collaborative technologies are allowing businesses to easily connect with anyone, anywhere, anytime. This is resulting in firms increasing their use of partnering, outsourced services and independent workers (freelancers, contractors, consultants, etc.). This is also blurring the boundaries between firms, leading to organizations behaving increasingly as nodes in broader networks rather than fully independent entities.
OUTSOURCING OPPORTUNITIES: As firms become more networked, they focus their internal efforts on core and/or strategic business functions. Areas not considered core or strategic are increasingly outsourced or turned over to business partners. This shift creates vast new opportunities for firms able to provide these services. And thanks to technology and rising offshoring costs, local firms are often at a competitive advantage relative to overseas outsourcing options.

2014 Will be The Comeback Year for S m a l l B u s i n e s s O w n e r s By Kelsey Cox | Business 2 Community Since the recession in 2008, small busi-ness owners have slowly been climbing their way back into the picture. In fact, small businesses created 102,000 new jobs in November 2013 alone, a key indicator of a healthy economy.
From December 2012 to December 2013, optimism for small businesses rose from 55% to 70%. Small businesses increased their travel by 89% in 2013 compared to 2012. One third of companies are expecting to spend more on web promo-tion this year. 80% of small business owners are planning to increase the number of products and offerings as well as hiring in 2014. The smartest small business owners know to set a spending plan, create a saving plan, track and manage expenses, invest in growth, and call on the professionals to free up time for more important matters. Young Entrepreneurs Learn About Risky Business On a recent Monday evening, partici-pants in the Young Entrepreneurs Acad-emy (YEA!) at Castle View High School, learned about the importance of insur-ance and risk management. Students were able to find out about the formal process of how an organization estab-lishes its risk management goals and objectives, as well as how to identify and analyze risk and liability . Heather Browning, Colonial Benefit Group, taught students that in order to avoid health and legal liability, risk management pro-cedures need to be put in place before starting any new enterprise or social movement. As part of the YEA! program, students are introduced to all facets of the busi-ness world including, but not limited to: attorneys, accountants, insurance agents, graphic designers and web developers. Over the course of this year’s YEA! pro-gram students will launch a number of businesses that include products, services and a non-profit organization. About the Young Entrepreneurs Academy: : : : The direct mission of YEA! is to help students em-brace their passion, energy, creativity and talents, launch a venture, and view entrepre-neurship as synonymous with success and free-dom. In 2008, YEA! “spun-off” from the Uni-versity of Rochester, where it was formed in 2004 with support from the Kauffman Founda-tion, to create its own not-for-profit corpora-tion, YEA! Inc., which is currently launching sites in colleges, universities and high schools across the country to provide comprehensive, exciting entrepreneurship education, leadership development and innovation training to youth, providing them with skills they need to suc-ceed in the 21st Century. Developing Leaders-Leadership Douglas County
January’s Class Topic: Economic Development and Transportation Steering Committee Planners: Sue Smith and Stephen Mikolajczak.
The purpose of January’s LDC was to provide Leadership Doug-las County (LDC) class members with information and insight into the factors that impact Douglas County Economic Develop-ment and how transportation (ground, air and mass transit) are key factors in a strong economy.
Hosted by Cabela’s Lone Tree, the class heard from an economic development panel that discussed development from a munici-pal viewpoint and included Amy Sherman President, NW Douglas County EDC; Don Van Wormer, City Manager, City of Castle Pines; Frank Gray, President/ CEO, Castle Rock EDC; John Hall, Eco-nomic Development Director, Town of Parker; and Seth Hoffman, City Manager, City of Lone Tree (LDC ’06).
The second part of this discussion included individuals from the business sector who related their experience working with the communities, economic development councils and the County. How and why they chose to locate where they did, and what that process and experience looked like, was shared by Brian McDonald, Senior VP Client Services/Support, Charles Schwab; Harold and Diane Smethills, Developers, Sterling Ranch; Clayton “Mitch” Mitchell, Executive Director National Facilities, Kaiser Permanente and Dennis Houston, President/CEO, Parker Chamber of Commerce.
Cabela's, located in the RidgeGate Commons development area, is a 110,000-square-foot store built in the company’s next-generation format, which is designed to surround customers in the outdoor experience. A “wild and fresh” exotic lunch served by Cabela’s Deli & Grill and sponsored by Charles Schwab & Kaiser Permanente, included bison, boar and elk. The leadership skill on “Servant Leadership” was presented by Bob Baker, Op-erations Chief of the South Metro Fire Rescue Authority, who delivered a message filled with passion and inspiration for serv-ing others.

To learn more about transportation, the class visited Centennial Airport, located in Dove Valley. Robert Olislagers, Executive Di-rector of Centennial Airport, reported that the airport is one of the busiest General Aviation airports in the country with ap-proximately one billion dollars in economic impact. A Regional Transportation Panel represented by Dave Kristick, Director of Operations, E-470; Larry Warner, President, C470 Coalition ; Gary Lasater, Director District G, Regional Transportation District (RTD) and Herman Stockinger, Director, Colorado Dept. of Trans-portation (CDOT), offered both state and local perspectives on population increases, technical solutions and funding options for transportation.

Town Council election season is here; candidate orientation Feb. 10 - If you’re looking to get more involved with your community, consider running for Town Council. The Town holds elections the first Tuesday in April in even-numbered years. Terms are staggered, so Town elec-tion Districts 3, 5, and 7 have open seats. The District 6 seat is open, too, because of a resignation. Town Council representatives serve four-year terms. The candidate elected to District 6 will serve two years, filling out the remainder of the original term, which began in 2012. Read more at www.castlerock.org/chamber_news2.htm

Right-lane closure near Castle View High School as North Meadows Extension construction continues - Safety is a priority as the Town, its partners, and general contractor Edward Kraemer & Sons move for-ward with the North Meadows Extension roadway project. As crews continue to monitor construction progress, one additional lane closure is needed. The right-turn lane from westbound Meadows Boulevard on to North Meadows Drive is now closed. Instead, the middle lane is a through or right-turn lane. This closure is to accommodate large trucks that need to make that tight turn as they haul dirt from Castle Rock Adventist Hospital to the construction site. http://www.castlerock.org/chamber_news4.htm
DC Online Volunteer Portal Now Open - Through the Partnership of Douglas County Governments (PDCG), nine organizations have launched a new countywide website for volunteers, www.VolunteerConnectDC.org.
