Dear Friends,

With all the wonderful January programming behind us, we eagerly look forward to another

month of good food and good fun at the Center.

Our Book Club will be discussing The Last Lecture on Monday, February 4th and distributing

our newest selection for next month.

On Monday, February 11th, Bette Grossman will return for another popular jewelry making

class. These classes, made possible by a grant from the Neighborhood Fund, are always so

much fun and of such high quality that our members wear the results proudly. Sign up in the

office to reserve your spot!

Moriah seniors will venture out of the Center on Tuesday, February 12th at 10:30 am, as we go

on a trip to The Anne Frank Center for a guided tour. We will return in time for lunch.

Don’t miss our special Fiddler on the Roof themed Klezmer Musical Duo on Monday, February

18th at 2 pm, made possible by the Monica Cohn Endowment for Music and the Arts.

Our February Birthday Party will be held this month on Wednesday, February 20th.

We will be distributing a bagged PICK-UP lunch on Thursday, February 21st at 1:15 pm.

Come in costume and ready to party on Monday, February 25th as funnyman/musician

JoJo Russell returns to Moriah for our annual Shushan Purim Masquerade Lunch!

As always, join us for Enhanced Computer Lab with Technology Playground on Wednesdays,

Exercise Classes on Wednesdays & Thursdays and Yoga on Friday morning.

Time is Running Out for Seniors to Meet March 1st Social Security Electronic Payment Deadline

Senior citizens still receiving their Social Security benefits by paper check must

take action soon - March 1st is the final deadline by which all remaining federal benefit check recipients must receive their money electronically. That is the date

the electronic payment law goes into effect.

The U.S. Treasury reports that 5 million checks continue to be mailed to federal beneficiaries each month. The Treasury is urging Social Security and other federal

benefit recipients not to delay and to switch now to either direct deposit or the Direct Express Debit MasterCard card.

If you or a loved one still receives paper checks for your benefit payments, now is the time to switch. It's free and easy – just call 1-800-333-1795 or

visit www.GoDirect.org, or come to the Moriah office – We are here to help you!

Look at what’s falling off the bookshelf at Moriah in February! A lot of professors give talks titled "The Last Lecture." Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can't help but mull the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy? When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave--"Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams"--wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have...and you may find one day that you have less than you think"). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living.

Register in the office and receive a library copy for advance reading.

MORIAH SENIOR CENTER

Join Moriah Senior Center for a 60 minute guided tour of this

moving exhibit, including a film “The Short Life of Anne Frank”

which includes the only film footage of Anne Frank

The permanent exhibit Anne Frank and Us at the Anne Frank Center USA, challenges all visitors to reflect on what personal responsibility to others means. A dollhouse-like re-creation of the Secret Annex, a house behind a house, lets visitors get a sense of how the Frank family was able to live without their presence being noticed by neighbors. Opposite the model is a case containing a painstakingly re-created facsimile of Anne's original diary, a facsimile of the family photo album and an authentic yellow star, which Jews in the Nazi-occupied city were forced to wear for the purposes of identification and vilification.

Chocolate Found to Boost Brain Health in Seniors

A new study shows that consuming more flavanol, a component of cocoa, improves cognitive function and blood pressure in elderly patients who have mild cognitive impairment. Senior patients, who already had cognitive impairment, drank cocoa drinks that had low, intermediate, or high amounts of antioxidants called flavanols. Cognitive function, including executive function, short-term and long-term memory, processing speed and overall thinking skills, was tested after eight weeks. Scores improved in patients who drank intermediate and high levels of flavanol. Head researcher Dr. Giovambattista Desideri, of the University of L’Aquila in Italy, said: “This study provides encouraging evidence that consuming cocoa flavanols, as a part of a calorie controlled and nutritionally balanced diet, could improve cognitive function.”
