From the Chancellor’s DeskTry to imagine a world in which the wolf and the lamb will share the same stall. The leopard and the baby goat will sleep together. A little child will put halters on a lion and a calf and lead them around. The lion will eat straw like the oxen. A little child will reach down into a cobra's den and not be harmed. That's what the world will be like one day, according to Isaiah the prophet (Isa. 11:6 and 65:25).

At some future time, the earth will be as full of the knowledge of the Lord as the oceans are with water; then no creature shall harm any other creature in all of God's earth.

How and when will the prophecy of Isaiah become a reality?

Remember, Holy Scripture does not declare that Isaiah's golden age will come through the achievements of people. It will become a reality when Jesus returns in the clouds with great power and glory for all the world to see. But until then, there will be wars and rumors of war. Nation shall rise up against nation. Therefore, we should be wise as snakes but innocent as doves.

There is a tiger within you and me that wants to snarl at people on the other side of the political or ideological fence. There is a wolf within us that re-opens old wounds and past failures even within our own households, just to make sure that even those nearest to us know we haven't forgotten their failures; maybe forgiven, but not forgotten. There is a cobra within us that lies in wait for people who are different from us, so that we can catch them fulfilling our prejudices about them. There is a bear within us that gives other people only one chance to disappoint us; and if they do, we reject them forever. What are we to do with ourselves, with this bundle of contradictions, with this combination of wolf and lamb? Only through yielding ourselves to the will of our Heavenly Father can we be fundamentally changed. When we welcome our Incarnate Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ into our daily lives, we have power to combat the sins and temptations of this world. Through the Holy Spirit, we can restrain the beast within us and unleash the angel.

Have you made that discovery yet? Once you do, the beast within is restrained, and the angel is unleashed. Then we become our Lord’s co-workers, preparing for that great day when Jesus will return in all His glory and the entire earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord.

Some years ago a new Christmas custom began in the New England area. Some Christian families there decided to limit their outdoor decorations to a single white candle in each window. That candle declared that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. It affirmed that Jesus alone is Lord. This style of decorating caught on and spread across the country. It is the opposite of the gaudy and tacky style that is popular in many places. The single candle in the window is beautiful in its simplicity. It declares that in this home and in these hearts, Jesus Christ comes first.Anytime a person claims Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, he or she resembles that single candle, a sentinel for the Kingdom of God, a clear sign to the world that one day Jesus Christ will return in glory.

Then the wolf and the lamb will lie down together. “…so that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bend, in Heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Phil. 2:10-11)

Faithfully,

Very Rev. Fr. George Tsahakis, Chancellor

From Emanuel Miliotis,Parish Council President

I wanted to update the community on the latest on the search for a permanent priest. I had a personal discussion with His Eminence Alexios at the 2013 HDF conference in Winston Salem. In our meeting he said there was serious discussion ongoing with a candidate. He said that he really appreciates Wilmington for our patience and it shouldn’t be long. His Eminence said he was looking for a candidate that met our needs. He wants to provide someone who has the maturity to help lead our community but someone also who has experience dealing with the youth. His Eminence believes that he will likely have someone for us before Pascha. This is good news. I will certainly keep everyone posted as information becomes solidified. I wanted again to thank all our volunteers for their tireless efforts. You have all stepped in to continue to drive forward initiatives and activities for our community.

In Christ’s service Emanuel Miliotis

PhiloptochosMary Beth Miliotis

The Ladies Philoptochos Society held their annual Vasilopita Auction on Sunday, January 13. We raised about $6,500 that will benefit various charities; predominately, St. Basil’s Academy and the St. Nicholas Benevolent Fund. We want to say thank you to those of you who contributed by either baking or purchasing the delicious Vasilopita. And a special thank you to Louis Batuyios for, once again, performing the role of auctioneer. Our next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, February 10 after coffee hour. We will start to plan for our upcoming Lenten Season.

Catechism CornerCourtney Malahias

I always think of February as the LOVE month. Hearts abound everywhere we look, and our thoughts turn to the ones we love. Jesus' most important teaching is to love one another. It is so easy to love the ones 'easy' to love and so difficult to love the ones that are a bit more 'difficult'. John 13:34-35 says "A new command I give you; Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." I particularly like the "must" part. He doesn't say please, he says must. We are all his disciples and a work in progress. To stay focused on love, takes praying ceaselessly and a mind and a heart that does not look left or right but straight on the target. This is not an easy task to accomplish and is always a work in progress (My poor husband! I am always reminding him I am a work in progress- bear with me!). This is why we "must" attend church services to help us look straight ahead at our target - which is a big heart! LOVE.

Our teachers are back with a bang to start our year off with lots of great lessons and attendance is good but we definitely need all of U at CH RCH! Come and see what we are all about and immerse your children in the liturgy to start your week off with heart!

Oratorical Festival will be February 24th so please encourage your children to participate. It is such a great experience for them and so good to have them study and learn about their faith.

StewardshipLambra Kokklanaris

How do I feel about stewardship? Since Debbie (Rallis) asked me to speak, my conclusion was to bring this to a personal level.

My love for our Orthodox Church began with my father who took me to our little church in Western Pennsylvania several times a week. We very conveniently lived a few houses away from our church. As president for many years, no on else wanted the position, my father would clean the church, collect money from parishioners to pay bills, change the light bulbs, etc. He was basically a one-man show & literally, many times would empty his pockets to buy anything that was necessary. As I remember, the most outstanding thing my father did as a good steward was to invite people to our home after church to feed them as they had traveled to church on a bus across the Allegheny River- restaurants were not the vogue, so whoever had nowhere to go would end up at our house where my father had awakened before dawn to bake a melt-in-your mouth pastichio, a roast and many vegetables.

When the Archbishop came to town, he invited him too. At my father’s insistence, I chanted the Apolytikion or Kontakion for the day as I stood shaking in my shoes. Through my five-year old mind I remember a tall figure with a long, white beard giving me his blessing over and over. It was probably Archbishop Michael or Archbishop Athenogoas who later became our Patriarch.

What do they say about befriending a stranger? One could possibly do so for Christ himself, and the Patriarch is the representative of Christ on earth.

Everything my father did was from the bottom of his heart. He was always smiling- hands down, he was the happiest person that I’ve ever known. My father was a coal miner.

I see my father in the many wonderful stewards in our parish; we are richly blessed:

1. a Council in which all members are extremely successful in their lives and endeavors and that manages so many details of our financial needs and spends many hours doing so.

2. Festival Chairmen devoted so many years to making money for our structural needs and repairs and all the many stewards who volunteered countless hours. “You have such a beautiful church” I’ve been told many times from visitors to our festivals.

3. Our spiritual needs met by the Choir that has been led by two very devoted people in the 16 years that I’ve been here.

4. Our outstanding Sunday School & Greek School Programs, and our many youth who are involved in our Dance Programs led by a creative director keeping the future of our church vital and strong.

5. Greeter each Sunday so needed for newcomers and visitors who come searching to be grounded in a strange place.

6. An Office Administrator who ties everything together. One who speaks English and Greek fluently and is highly educated.

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church February 2013

8

Page 9: February 2013 Monthly Newsletter

7. Our converts who constantly amaze and inspire me – they found in our beautiful faith what many of us baptized in infancy take for granted or have abandoned completely. They give so freely of their treasure, their time, and mostly their love.

8. Our anonymous givers who fill up the empty spaces with their treasure that is not known to us abut only to their Lord and Master. They know secrets to a fulfilled life that many of us never experience. As Christ said in Luke 12, that they embody “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

9. Our founders who worked tirelessly for many years with fundraising efforts, dinners, bake sales, etc. and their own treasure. One family alone donating the beautiful Iconostasion and Pantocrator. Our oldest member, a woman who worked passionately and gave and is giving consistently and many like her blessed in memory.

My husband and I would not have retired to Wilmington without our beautiful St. Nicholas church or his wonderful cousins (also amazing stewards) being here. We would have gone to Florida where I would have withered away in that awful heat. Thank you founders!

In discussing stewardship, we can’t avoid the bottom line. In Greece, churches have been standing for over 100 years plus the expenses of the physical parts for the church are minimal at best, and since Orthodoxy is a state religion, priests are paid by the government. Here, our biggest expense is the priest’s salary and benefits. Only a priest through Apostolic Succession can call the Holy Spirit that we see shining through our steward. Fortunately, in our parish, we have less than ten people who give enough to cover the priest’s salary and benefits. God bless them for they obviously give beyond tithing. The rest of us, 100 or so, need to cover the rest of the bills.

Personally my husband and I through our pledge, the 7-day candles that I light weekly and other church activities fulfill our tithing by writing checks, but not everyone can tithe –our parish is small. How can we all help in some small way if we can’t or haven’t decided to increase our pledge amount?

When I was a child, my father would give me a dollar to light a candle at the pangari. I’m 71, so it’s time for me to place $2.00 for a candle, because the cost of that candle is almost a dollar with the rise on mailing rates added to it. I noticed someone in the pew in front of me putting $2.00 in the collection plate. This is one place I don’t naturally write a check and from force of habit, I had been placing $1.00 as I have been for almost 70 years. Time to add another dollar. It’s only an extra dollar, but every bit counts and it would help the council who struggle to make ends meet. Our candle bill alone is $7,000 and our electric bill is $10,000. These are just 2 of the many, many necessities.

Just as my father dug into his pockets many years ago, we need to dig a little deeper too.

He helped shine his way into Paradise by lighting up his little church with light bulbs, as we can help by giving a little more toward the electric bill and ultimately and forever also finding ourselves at the feet of Our Lord and Savior.

May it now and forever be so.Amen.

“It’s all Greek to him”Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at 4:03 by Ben Steelmanhttp://books.blogs.starnewsonline.com/17027/its-all-greek-to-him/

A Kure Beach man has donated more than 100 books on Hellenic history, literature and culture to the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Retired engineer and businessman Michael A. Papadeas amassed the collection over a 50-year period.

“I wanted them to go to a place where they can be preserved and shared,” he said.

Papadeas donated the books to UNCW’s Randall Library. The books cover Greek history and literature. Many are written in classical Greek, in Katharevousa, the conservative or “High” form of Modern Greek, or in the demotic Greek spoken by most Greeks today. About 30 percent of the volumes are in English. Papadeas said he was inspired to make the gift after attending a 2011 lecture at Randall Library by Nicholas Gage, the Greek-Amnerican author of the best-selling “Eleni.” Gage’s appearance was sponsored by the Cape Fear chapter of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), a Greek-American group. Born in Athens, Papadeas graduated from Auburn University as an electrical engineer, worked with AT&T and retired from Lucent Technologies after 35 years’ service. For the past 40 years, he has divided his time between Kure Beach and Burlington. He holds a U.S. patent relating to the testing of telephone channel filters. Papadeas’ memoirs, “Coming to America” are to be published later this year, according to UNCW spokesman Andrea Weaver.

Festival

The 21st Annual St. Nicholas Greek Festival is coming up May 17, 18, & 19. The main thing we need help with at this point is getting started on our Sponsorship Program. Last year the Sponsorship Program brought in $24,000 in revenue which is more than a quarter of the whole revenue we received from the festival. It is a very vital and important part of our festival celebration. Sponsorship is an opportunity to share your well wishes to the festival, show off your family, advertise your business, and be a part of this amazing community. With each level there are meal tickets, and admission tickets, and tickets for pastry boxes that is worth at least half of the money that is paid for each level. $100 will get you one-quarter page and, 4 meal tickets, 4 admission tickets, and a pastry box. For those who worked the festival, these are great to be given out as gifts and bring more people in to our festival. We have estimated that if everybody in the community buys a festival ad and sells one festival ad, we can increase revenue from this one source to $50,000. Please help us with this very important and valuable aspect of the Greek Festival.
