The mystery and art of love

I don't know if you have ever received a valentine card that was a genuinemystery. I have. It arrived on February 14th 1981 just before my sixteenthbirthday and I'm embarrassed to confess that I've only just realised(while writingthis) who sent it. The problem was that the mystery of the sender was compoundedby the fact that the message was written in Latin - a language of which I wascompletely ignorant. I had to ask my Dad what it said (how embarrassing couldthat have been!!?) and when he had translated it with a lot of fake lecherouswinking I really was not that flattered! My hopeful suitor had written "Girl withbushy eyebrows. You are a plump, juicy sausage in the frying pan of life".Thirty two years on and quite resigned to my eyebrows and physique I have toapplaud the genuine affection and humour of the sender -who I now realise wasone Master Fryer (how did I miss that less-than-subtle "frying pan" clue for 32years??) who in fact I liked very much. Ah me! What might have been if I hadbeen less paranoid about being thought of as a fat, fuzzy piece of charcuterieby the boy of my dreams?!

Most of us would agree that love is a bit of a mystery -even those who reduce itto mere chemistry and biology. Old or young we recognise those amazingfeelings! We tend to focus on love as a feeling but when real life kicks in love asa feeling sometimes fades into inertia, frustration, boredom and even dislikeand we can feel cheated and go off in search of new romance.

This month when everywhere you look is full of pink cards, chocolate, mooningcouples and preposterously overpriced flowers it may be helpful to look at oneof the best definitions of happy- ever- after- love ever written. "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does notdishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps norecord of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. Italways protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." Whetheryou are atheist, neutral or Christian, I think it is hard to deny the truth of thatbible passage *. The REAL mystery of true love is not the passion. True love isan act of determination, an act of will, sometimes against all the odds. True loveis a choice not a feeling. It is a mystery of perseverance, in the face of real life, temptation and weariness. It is the way God loves us too.

Certainly I, plump sausage that I am, take heart from the fact that God loves mealthough it must sometimes require great determination on His part to stick withme. It's true of you too. Yes, even you. That is the greatest mystery of love*1 corinthians 13:4-7

JETTY FIELDS.

A great deal has been achieved over the past few weeks! We are planningwork in all areas of Jetty Fields for the benefit of all those who enjoy thiswonderful amenity. We had a highly successful work morning on Saturday, 5th January. Over 16local residents came along to work at tidying the area. A large bonfire helpedin the task and provided warmth for the workers. A BIG THANK YOU to allthose who gave their energy and enthusiasm! There will be another workmorning in the spring- ALL WELCOME! It will be advertised on the JettyField's notice board and in the B.V.N.Three, replacement Lime trees have been planted in the avenue on the field. The wooded area at the top has been tidied up and the low branches cut backto bring in more light. We still expect the arrival of the sheep! The future is bright! The encroaching bramble, thorn and other bushes are tobe cut down all around the edges of the field. A new mowing contract will helpwith access and upkeep in the coming spring and summer. We have had two very generous, but different, offers of help. The allotmentholders are to be offered horse manure - free of charge! A local horse owneris glad to make this available on condition it is collected! Residents of a houseon the Green, whose land backs on to the Pocket Park, have offered to giveus access to a water source under their garden. This means we will not needpower or mains water to feed the water feature that is already in place. Wehope to do this work in the summer.A final note in the form of a request! PLEASE KEEP CLEANING UP AFTERYOUR DOGS AND HELP US TO CONTINUE TO LOOK AFTER OURTREMENDOUS ASSET - JETTY FIELDS._______________________________________________________________________

How about trying something new for 2013…Volunteering at Canons Ashby,

Canons Ashby is a hidden treasure in the heart of the Northamptonshirecountryside north of Banbury. Nestled in the hills, the Elizabethan manor houseand medieval priory church, gardens and parkland are almost untouched by themodern world. Visiting Canons Ashby is a thoroughly enjoyable experience witha fascinating house and church, beautiful formal topiary gardens and parkland, and the warmest of welcomes. The National Trust acquired the property from the Dryden family in 1980, and itopened to the public in 1984. Today, the National Trust has lovingly restored thehouse to its Victorian appearance to immerse visitors within the story of SirHenry Dryden, a captivating and curious past owner of Canons Ashby.Without the contributions of our fantastic volunteer team, Canons Ashby wouldsimply not be able to offer the enchanting experience that it does to tens ofthousands of visitors every year. We are always looking to improve thisexperience with new projects and new ideas, and that's why we need you!Something for everyoneOur staff and volunteers make Canons Ashby special, bringing this amazingplace to life so that visitors want to return time and time again. It is not just aboutbeing a history boffin; here are just some of the many ways that volunteers canget involved:Welcome Team membersRoom and garden guidesCoach House assistantsResearch assistantsFamily History researchGardenersCanons Ashby owes much to the continued help and dedication of its volunteers. In return we can offer you a rewarding experience; meeting like minded peopleand making new friends, and a fantastic opportunity to gain new and interestingskills. There are some more tangible benefits too, after a qualifying period ofvoluntary work you will receive your Volunteer Card, giving you free entry to allNT properties and a discount in NT shops and restaurants. We can also contributeto your travel expenses between home and Canons Ashby.Interested? How to find out more…On January 26th and February 23rd you are most welcome to come along toCanons Ashby between 10am and 1pm to meet the team for a chat and a cup oftea. You can also get in touch with us with any queries that you have:Email: [email protected] Phone: 01327 861900Address: Canons Ashby House, Canons Ashby, Daventry, NorthamptonshireNN11 3SD

THE VILLAGE HALL

This information is for all who make regular use of our Village HallWith the refurbishment and general face-lift of our Village Hall, the name of'The Games Room' has been changed. The origin of this name is lost in time. Why 'Games'? It is certainly NOT asports hall, being warm, carpeted and with flexible lighting facilities. A verycomfortable room all together. After much thought and discussion it has been decided to re-name it 'TheGallie Room'When this building was last the Village School Duncan Alistair Gallie was thefinal Headmaster. He was Headmaster from January 1944 until he retired inJuly 1965 as our more mature villagers will remember. He was very wellthought of so this is a good way of preserving his memory. During his retirementhe continued to live in the village until his death in July 1990His daughter Jean now lives in Harrow. She is very happy with the conceptand has happy memories of Braunston. She has supplied a photo which isbeing enlarged and framed. It will be mounted in the Gallie Room togetherwith a suitable memorial plaque.Having been called the Games Room for almost 50 years old habits will diehard but think of the man and honour his memory.Alan Dent

A NEW AND EXCITING WAY TO BE A VOLUNTEER!!

Become a Timebank member, share your skills, meet people and get help foryourself! What is a Timebank? It is a way for people to share skills with others and be rewarded for it in time. For every hour of help you give providing a service for another member, youreceive one time credit. You can 'spend' your time credits getting help for yourselffrom another member. As a Timebank member you would not be called upon on a regular basis, but asand when someone in your community needs the type of help you were offering. This makes it easy for everybody to take part in Timebank, whether working orretired, unemployed or studying. How does it work?People who join the Timebank will be asked to list the skills they can offer and thethings that they may need help with. Everyone's contribution is welcomed andeveryone's skills are valued equally - one hour always equals one time creditregardless of the type of skill so, for example someone offering to sweep a pathwill be valued just as much as someone offering to audit accounts. Volunteers atthe office will keep a record of all the skills registered and when a member asksfor help they will be put in contact with the member that can offer that help.Records are also kept of all the help given and received and members will besent details of their Timebank 'account' every few months. When we first tell people about Timebank we sometimes get the comment 'Ihaven't got any skills' but when we start talking to them we find they have done allsorts of things in their lives which could be helpful to others. When you joinTimebank we will help you identify your skills so don't be put off in thinking youhave nothing to offer. We believe everyone in the community can contribute tothe well-being of others. Some of the skills of the people who have joined include: Shopping, HouseSitting, Gardening, Ironing, Using Computers, dog walking, cycle repairs, delivering leaflets, furniture restoration, craftwork, knitting and so many more. How to contact Timebank? The office is based in Daventry, upstairs at the New Street Day Centre, next toTesco. We are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am until 1pm but canalso arrange appointments at other times. You can contact us direct on 017414995243 or Email us at [email protected]. You can alsoleave a message at the volunteer centre at the library by calling in or ringing on01327 300614.

If you like the sound of volunteering in your local community in this way and cansee yourself being part of this growing movement please contact us.

My sincere thanksgo to each and everyone of you who have, and continue to donate to this veryworthy project. It is evident that our efforts are really appreciated ( especially so over theChristmas period ) as I recently received 7 more letters of thanks from ourcurrent recipients thanking us for our parcels, Christmas cards and good wishesto them.Just before Christmas, our efforts reached a much wider audience when I wasinterviewed on BBC Radio Northampton by presenter, John Griff, aboutBraunston's Parcels. In the latest letter from the O.C. of the Royal Dragoon Guards ( who are receivingour parcels ) he said that the rainy and cold season has started, giving ourtroops more challenges to overcome. So, no doubt the receiving of our parcelshelp to boost their morale and resolutions while operating in such circumstances.Thank you all, once again, for your continued support - it is appreciated by somany.Val Worral

Braunston Locks TowpathBraunston Canal Society is well aware of the public concern about the conditionof the towpath on the lock flight. We have been reminding the Canals and RiversTrust about our concerns since earlier last year. To be fair to the trust thesituation has been made worse by the long term wet weather we have experiencedsince last year. I don't think that is a good excuse but there have been manychanges since the demise of British Waterways and the introduction of CRT. Onbalance we believe the changes are for the better, it is just a shame that thetowpath work has been allowed to slip through the net.I have had a meeting on site with Lee King and John Highmore of CRT, Lee isthe person who can move this forward. I think he was shocked at how bad it hadbecome, to add to our problems the heavy rain is washing silt and mud downfrom the bridge outside The Admiral Nelson.CRT are in the middle of their winter maintenance programme and will not beable to spare staff until April or later but I now have a promise that major repairswill be carried out to the section between lock 2 and lock 3 as soon as possible.Braunston Canal Society has offered the use of our volunteers for some of thiswork. REEL REVIEWS

LATEST CINEMA RELEASE:

'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'

Rating: ****

Release Date: OUT NOW

After 9 long years away middle earth returns. Set sixty years before the eventsof the 'Lord Of The Rings' trilogy, 'The Hobbit' acts as a younger sibling to thelatter of the movies set in middle earth appealing to younger audiences than theprevious movies.'An Unexpected Journey', the first in the trilogy of three new Hobbit movies to bereleased, centers around a familiar young hobbit named Bilbo Baggins (MartinFreeman) being thrust into the adventure of a lifetime with help from anotherfamiliar face, wizard Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen) and a small group of dwarveson a quest to reclaim their homeland from the dragon Smaug. With beautiful set pieces and memorable characters, the hobbit is nothing shortof spectacular and families are likely to enjoy the movie. However fans of theoriginal trilogy may be left feeling that there is something to be desired.

NEW TO DVD - 'SKYFALL'

Rating: *****Release Date: 18/02/2012After a hard-drive containing a list of all NATO operatives working undercover interrorist organizations is stolen, a believed to be dead 007 must come out ofremission to retrieve the drive.Although all is not as simple as it sounds when Bond comes face to face withone of his toughest foes yet, a mysterious man known as Silva (Javier Bardem). After the promising 'Casino Royale' and slightly disappointing 'Quantum Of Solace'Daniel Craig's return to the role of Bond is very well received with a gritty andrealistic take on 007 that remains respectful of earlier films and at some pointsharkens back to Bonds of past without the pitfalls of feeling too over the top ortoo camp as seen in previous Bond outings.'Skyfall' is a perfect return to form for a character that has just recently celebrated50 years of being on the big screen and with a star studded supporting cast withthe likes of Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Judi Dench and Naomie Harris wecan most definitely say that Bond is back.

I’m just warming up after an afternoon of sledging on Braunston’s snowysouthern slopes, with what seemed like half the village.

There’s no doubt that wintry weather brings some of us closer together. But itcan leave those less mobile, less close to friends or family, much more isolated. If you think of anyone living alone who might need help why not call or dropby? In the meantime, here’s news of some local efforts which aim to bringpeople together.

Happy at Home works to help older, rurally isolated people, access localservices and information, and as a result, feel happier about living in their ownhomes for longer. It’s run by the Daventry Volunteer Centre, who are lookingboth for helpers and participants. Find out more from Nicola Toms on 01327300614 or [email protected].

Braunston Community Car Reverend Sarah and I are delighted that aBraunston resident responded to our notice in the BVN and gifted us a car sothat we can develop a community car scheme, principally to help people get toevents and services in the village and nearby. We hope to get the schemeactive soon and will be able to share more details shortly.

Bank of Braunston… a time bank, to be precise, putting people in touch witheach other to share skills and talents. For every hour you spend helping some-one, you earn one time credit to spend on the skills offered by another mem-ber. Reverend Sarah and I are in the early stages of exploring how it couldwork here. Watch out for more in the next BVN.Social media Last week I went to a conference for Councillors about socialmedia. Some Councillors are holding surgeries by Skype, the web-basedvoice and video calling software. Some of us are using Twitter(@campbellabigail) and Facebook (abigailforbraunstonandwelton) to commu-nicate Council decisions, share news, debate issues, and bring people to-

Braunston Canal SocietyI had anticipated that Dec. and Jan. would be quiet months with little worthreporting. In the event there have been several unexpected items that have keptus on our toes. We have been discussing Adoption with Canals and Rivers Trustfor some months, seemingly with little effect. Then suddenly in December wereceived an email confirming our adoption of a section of the Grand UnionCanal from Braunston Tunnel Portal up to the Junction at the twin bridges.Unfortunately our plans for a presentation at the Stop House in January. fellvictim to the heaviest snow we have seen for some time so a new date will beplanned for the future. In preparation for this I was interviewed on BBC RadioNorthampton on Wed 16th Jan. It provided a good opportunity to spread theword about our group. We had a successful work party at the top lock on the13th January clearing the aftermath of last year`s tree felling and clearing mudetc from around lock 3 and the bridge. We also now have our own website whichwill hopefully carry details of our current and future plans.www.braunstoncanalsociety.org.ukChris Burton

BRAUNSTON WALKERSEverdon-Farthingstone- Snorscombe (c.9 miles) - Walk Saturday 24/11/2012After a week of heavy rain, wind and floods it was no surprise that the forecastshowed rain starting at ten o'Clock in the morning coincidentally just as ten of usmet up for the drive to Everdon. It hadn't started raining as we left but it wasmisty and murky and cold and we arrived at the Plough pub in the village toorder our lunch before setting out on the walk. The log burner was making thepub really cosy and we were reluctant to leave but since we are a walking groupwe thought it best to make a start. Everdon is a beautiful old village and wewalked the length of the main street and then out of the village towardsFarthingstone. On reaching the woodland at Everdon Stubbs we turned left ontoa footpath alongside the forest and climbed up a damp field. On the map this isshown as a viewpoint and when I did the recce the week before it was a fantasticview but today it was unremittingly grey. Our path skirted the woods, which inearly summer is carpeted by drifts of magnificent bluebells, but is now a soggymess of fallen leaves. The path reached Heath Farm and we followed its drivewayto reach a minor road. In view of the wet conditions and to avoid a mutinousgroup, already disgruntled since neither Terry or Nigel, our usual purveyors ofsweets had been able to join us,we followed the road steeply down hill and thenuphill, equally steeply, to reach Farthingstone on the Macmillan Way. This is a a290 mile long distance path from Boston Lincolnshire to Abbotsbury, Dorsetwhere we had walked back in August. As it was now raining we decided toforego the next 285 miles. I swear it was harder walking uphill without thesweets. The old stone village is a delightful place and just before the church andpub we came across a wrought iron gate which opens to the Joy Mead Cloisters. This park was bequeathed to the villagers in 1922 by the Agnew family inremembrance of their two sons who had died of wounds after the Great Warand of their daughter, Joy Mead, who had died of TB in 1920. It was specificallydesigned by the family who had suffered so many tragic deaths to be a happyplace and it certainly was when we arrived. We left Farthingston on the Maidfordroad and then turned right onto the Knightley Way footpath a more modest 12miler starting in Badby and ending in Greens Norton. Crossing wet meadowland and one particularly soggy ploughed field we got to the woodland at MantlesHeath and reached a road that goes to Preston Capes. We saw an open accesssign over the road which allowed us to cross a valley to reach the footpath downto Snorscombe Mill and just after the old mill a waterlogged path lead off to theleft for the half a mile or so back to Everdon . The Plough was still warm andcosy and we soon settled down to delicious soup, baguettes and Jack SpanielBitter. It is a super little country pub and the food, service and warm welcomeput it near the top of our recommendation list. We had walked nearly 6 miles atthis stage and the rain was still coming as we left the village and joined a fieldpath over the imposing Everdon Hill at 186 metres above sea level and down hill

Walk Saturday 15122012For the last walk of 2012 we stayed close to home and 17 of us, a great turnout, set off for a romp from the village hall and out on the Welton Road. Theweather was cloudy with the sun peeking through and after severe frosts allweek it was now rather damp and squelchy underfoot. We turned left off theroad on a small path that takes you over to the Admiral Nelson. Alice was a bit ofa stick in the mud on the way over near the bridge over the small stream thatruns next to the path. We arrived at the Nelson and followed the road to the lastlock and then along the canal up to the gaping tunnel entrance. We followed thesame route as the countless horses, that were used to tow the canal boats, overthe top of the tunnel past several castle like air vents taking fresh air to thedank, dark, tunnel below. We entered a field up near Middlemore and trudgedin the mud over two fields to reach the welton Road and the lovely footpath thatruns at the back of Bragborough. We were all making far too much noise andsuddenly were treated to the sight of three deer emerging from the woods andrunning hell for leather over the fields. A fantastic sight as was the magnificentbuzzard on a bush along the Barby Road who lazily flew from his perch as wearrived. The walk followed the road left until we regained the Jurassic Way pathtaking us back to the village and a great lunch at The Old Plough. The chipswere amongst the best I have ever had and the pints of Doombar were sublime. We normally meet at 10 o'clock at the village hall on the third Saturday in themonth. Our next walks in 2013 are as follows:19th Jan Nethercote and Flecknoe (c.9miles)16th Feb Staverton and Middlemore (c.9 miles)16th March Churchover (c.10 miles)20th Apr Harlestone Firs (c.10 miles)18th May Braunston! (c.10 miles)15th June Strines Moor (c.11 miles)

to Westcombe Farm where we joinexd the road towards Preston Capes andthen the small road with a very steep uphill bit back to Everdon and home for areviving cuppa! An excellent scenic walk despite the dreary weather. Our next walk is 15/12 Flecknoe (6 miles)
