“For nearly 40 years this story has given faithful service to the Young in Heart; and time has been powerless to put its kindly philosophy out of fashion. To those of you who have been faithful to it in return … and to the Young in Heart … we dedicate this picture.”

So reads the opening title card for the 1939 MGM classic film, The Wizard of Oz. Many more decades have passed and the “kindly philosophy” of this story remains in fashion as both the

books and the movie continue to find remarkable presence in our lives. Baum wrote a uniquely American fairy tale with a strong and imaginative heroine. In all manifestations of this story Dorothy is actively involved in the outcome of her journey. She takes on initiative and she encourages others on the road to do the same: As the Wizard remarks when Dorothy presents him with the Wicked Witch's broomstick: “Very resourceful.”

I live with a folk artist. I see him take a piece of wood or a napkin or … a broken toaster and with creative ingenuity (and perhaps some paint and other random elements) — he creates works of art. Whoever put that Tin Man together was an artist of this sort. Fueled by the concept of creative resourcefulness — our Alliance Oz is inspired by the ingenuity of famous American folk artists and by the license that is granted to all “outsider artists” — to create from the heart in ways that move the spirit.

To all the artists out there who see with youthful hearts and re-create beauty often from the most humble elements … and perhaps help all of us to identify and appreciate the places we call “home,” we dedicate this production.

T he Alliance Theatre’s production of The Wizard of Oz has been influenced

in terms of research by the 1939 movie and the aesthetic of folk art. This research has been aided by students in the Alliance Theatre’s Dramaturgy By Students 2-12 program. Student dramaturgs for The Wizard of Oz come from the 2nd - 8th grades, and their relationship to the material and ability to translate their excitement to both actors and their fellow students have been invaluable.

Believing that even the youngest students can benefit from a hands-on creative approach to research and communication, the Alliance Theatre works with teaching artists and amazing classroom teachers to allow student dramaturgs to create materials and study guides, supply research, produce lobby boards and contribute to program

notes. Schools fueling The Wizard of Oz program this year are Hamilton E. Homes Elementary, Clairemont Elementary, Dresden Elementary, the Friends School of Atlanta, Garden Hills Elementary, the Museum School of Avondale Estates and Nesbit Elementary.

Folk art origins and student dramaturgyFrom the Jr. Dramaturgs:“Folk art is created by a person who is not formally trained in art. People use their imagination to create folk art using anything they find: found objects, junk, ‘garbage.’ They put it together to make something new, colorful, unusual and different.”

to create these costumes and set designs?

• How many of these can you find during the play?

• Where did you see these folk art designs in the play? (Bottle trees; A roadside sign advertising corn; Bicycle-part art that is also “practical”; A crazy quilt; Bottle-cap eyes)

What is folk art?

The drawings in this program grew out of the dramaturgy work of the 3rd grade students at The Museum School of Avondale Estates who designed their own representations of the iconic characters in The Wizard of Oz. Color renderings and scale draftings by Scenic Designer Kat Conley.

Definition (noun) — Art originating among the common people of a nation or region and usually reflecting their traditional culture, especially everyday or festive items produced or decorated by unschooled artists.

The answer, like the art, depends on who you ask. Originally the term described utilitarian items like quilts and weather vanes. In 1945, French artist Jean Dubuffet used the term “art brut,” as referring to art created by individuals on the margins of society, immune to artistic culture. In 1972, art critic Roger Cardinal coined “outsider art” to describe art created outside the mainstream art world. Today, the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore gives us a beautifully nuanced answer: “It is art produced by self-taught individuals, usually without formal training, whose work arises from an innate personal vision that revels foremost in the creative act itself.”

Given its ubiquity in pop culture, you might think there would be no way to find a new twist on the story of the Kansas farm girl swept by a tornado into a magical fantasy land full of talking scarecrows, flying monkeys and wicked

witches. But Alliance Theatre director Rosemary Newcott has done just that with her latest production, which adds a folksy bit of Southern flavor to the story. She recently spoke about the challenges of reframing the tale.

Originally published as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in May 1900, author L. Frank Baum’s beloved children’s classic has been

interpreted countless times in the past century, from musical stage plays and comic books to TV shows and video games. There were numerous film adaptations released between 1910 and 1932 (including a 1925 version featuring Oliver Hardy), but for most people the 1939 film starring a young Judy Garland is the definitive version.

Page 16: February 2012 Wizard of Oz at the Alliance Theatre

The Wizard of Oz has been around more than 100 years and has become a cherished classic of literature, stage and screen. What is it about L. Frank Baum’s story that makes it endure? The fact that it is a uniquely “American fairy tale,” written by Baum to appeal to an American culture. Also, the story encourages the fact that anyone at any age is empowered to take on challenges and succeed.

What drew you to the idea of directing this production for the Alliance? Our artistic director, Susan Booth, inspires us all to dream big. I have faith that the Alliance Theatre set designers, technicians, cast, crew and staff are well-equipped to take on the task of telling this tale in a beautiful way.  Plus, The Wizard of Oz is simply a story that must be told, and retold. What are the inherent challenges of taking on a story that is so iconic?Exactly that! Everyone has a favorite Wizard of Oz character, line or moment, especially from the film.  The stage is not film, but magic can still occur. The design team and myself have tried to “honor” the iconic images from the film as well as the book’s integrity.

How does this Royal Shakespeare Company adaptation differ from the film, or the Andrew Lloyd Webber Broadway revival last year? Both versions feature music from the original film.  I have not seen Lloyd Webber’s production, but the [Wicked Witch of the West] in the Royal Shakespeare Company script is a little more comical than the one Margaret Hamilton portrayed in the film. Naturally, the effects are different, and

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s recent work incorporates new songs. Can you talk about how you’ve tried to put your twist on this tale and what you hope audiences will get out of it?The overall design concept for the

Alliance production is “American Folk Art,”  which seemed to be a natural fit. For instance, the Tin Man is composed of tin items and is, therefore, a folk art piece in and of himself. The production’s casting also reflects the diversity of our Atlanta community in the same way that folk art reflects the surroundings of each individual artist. Finally, it is my sincere hope that the vivid characters and enduring themes in the work will once again delight and inspire the audiences of today in a way that only live theatre can.

SynopsisThe Wizard of Oz is a beloved American children's novel written in 1900, and then adapted into the classic 1939 film. The movie became embedded in the collective American psyche through annual television airings beginning in 1956. The story concerns young Dorothy gale’s adventures after a tornado blows her house from Kansas to the land of oz. There Dorothy realizes her own strength and abilities, makes three great friends, rescues the Kingdom from the evil Wicked Witch of the West and learns that there is “no place like home.”

about the alliance theatre

30 ENCoREATlANTA.Com

Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. The theatre has gained national recognition and prominence as we have become a leading international city. in 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta Children’s Theatre (founded in 1929) in order to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. in 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. in 2007, under the leadership of Susan Booth, Jennings hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance received the Regional Theatre Tony Award®, in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement.

Realizing that our audience and the national field supports plays developed in Atlanta, the Alliance has created a large body of new work. The Alliance produces world premiere American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent regional productions. The theatre creates and nurtures the plays and careers of early-career playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National graduate Playwrighting Competition, providing a premiere for the winner as part of our regular season and national networking opportunities for four finalists. locally based artists create work on a nationally watched stage, launching and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Finally we create and produce original plays for young audiences at every age level: from the Collision Project, which creates opportunities for high school artists to collide with classic texts, to the ground-breaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive work for infants and toddlers.

The Alliance takes great pride in our multigenerational educational programming. Believing that the same excellence found on our stage must be found in our education programs, the Alliance created the institute for Educators and Teaching Artists. A collaborative partnership between the Alliance and partner schools, the institute programs equip teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These innovative programs include gA Wolf Trap, a nationally recognized professional learning program that focuses on literacy skills for children in pre-K – 2nd grade; Dramaturgy K-12, a unique program that empowers student scholars to create research material that both informs Alliance productions and prepares their peer audiences; and Collision Plus, which takes the creativity and collaboration of the Collision Project into our high school classrooms. The Alliance also offers community education, including classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development (working with local writers and playwrights from the National graduate Playwriting Competition). Twice recognized by the Federal Department of Education as leaders in the field of arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access.

The Alliance Theatre strives to set the highest artistic standards and create the powerful experience of shared theatre for a diverse audience. Above all else, we value excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration.

C: The Alliance offers the opportunity for young people to explore this art form in a highly creative and supportive environment. Oh, and a ton of fun for everyone involved. From 9 am until 4 pm, the students develop their theatre skills, stretch their imaginations, and collaborate with professional teaching artists as they work towards creating an original performance piece that they later share with their friends and families on the final day of camp. They of course learn ensemble acting skills or in some camps, musical theatre or creative writing, but they also learn vital skills such as creativity and collaboration — skills that transcend the theatre world.

Every spring break and summer the Woodruff Arts Center comes alive with the joyous hustle and bustle of more than 650 young people from ages 4 through 18. I joined Christopher Moses, Alliance Theatre Director of Education, for a short chat about the Alliance Theatre’s Spring Break and Summer Camps.

A cure for the

summertime blues

A: What is the typical camper’s day like?

A: What do the Alliance Theatre’s Spring Break and Summer Camps have to offer?

C: The Alliance’s commitment is to help each camper, regardless of age - even the youngest 4 year- olds - find their voice and tell their own story. It’s not just about rehearsing and performing, but about inviting the campers to join in the artistic process—and acquiring skills that help develop more compassionate and creative human beings. Watching students blossom throughout the course of a one or two-week camp is absolutely incredible. Another thing that makes the Alliance camps unique is the fact that all of the material ties directly to the artistic work happening onstage. For example, kindergarteners will be working with The Tortoise and the Hare and A Child’s Garden of Verses (two recent Theatre for the Very Young performances), while elementary aged students explore material from The Wizard of Oz—so each student has a chance to see the work, draw inspiration from it and create their own performance in the camp. The Alliance exposes children to this art form and gives them a chance to own it. You will find the same level of artistic excellence in the classrooms as you do on stage at the Alliance Theatre. Anyone who has spent time at the Woodruff Arts Center will tell you there is an overwhelming sense of joy and excitement that accompanies each Alliance camp season. We invite you to come and share the experience.

A: What makes the Alliance camp different from other camps?

C: While it varies depending on the camp, mornings tend to focus on learning the basic skill set and afternoons are devoted to rehearsing and preparing for the performance. It’s a very active program, filled with physical and imaginative acting exercises and theatre games. In every one of our 40 different camps, students forge new friendships through this shared experience of theatre.

For more information about the Alliance Theatre’s Spring Break or Summer Camp offerings please visit alliancetheatre.org/dramacamp or contact [email protected] or 404.733.4700.
