Happy February, everyone! As I'm writing this, we're sitting at 37 degrees and the most frightful thing out is dense fog. Not typical weather for mid-January in Central Illinois and I'm certainly happy about that!

I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone in the CAPS Program (Community Awareness, Possibilities & Supports) at Macon Resources who help us deliver Thrive every month, no matter what the weather. They do a fantastic job and we couldn't get Thrive out there without them.

If you know of an organization looking for service hours that would like to be part of the delivery team, feel free to give us a call!

The Dixie Daredevils put on a wonderful show at Lock Stock and Barrel on the afternoon of January 21st. There was a spectacular turnout to watch the Pioneer Jazz band perform. The Daredevils have been performing since the mid 80s with some member changes over the years. The lighthearted Jazz band took the time to greet patrons before, during, and after the show. You can catch the Dixie Daredevils at the 37th Annual Jazz Festival February 3-5 at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel or at LSB every Saturday until June! -Ali Stanton

Dan TedescoChicago native Dan Tedesco gave the audience at Donnie's Homespun Pizza quite the treat as he finished his nationwide tour to promote his newest album "Tracks On Fire" on January 14. His original Folk Rock music gave a nostalgic turn to Bob Dylan and Tom Petty as he sang about some of the experiences life has had for him. The patrons at Donnie's were friendly and very open to his independent music. "I really try to write songs that are relevant," Dan told me when asked about his inspirations in his life. -Ali Stanton

The Iron Lady

Thrive photographer Travis Lickey timed his visit to the AVON Theater just right to catch these ladies talking movies in the lobby minutes after The Iron Lady and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy let out on Saturday, January 21. On-site to shoot this month's Spot the Difference Challenge, we caught plenty of lively chatter in the air about these AVON exclusive films. Also worth mentioning, the popcorn image below was one of Travis' Spot the Difference photo suggestions. See the image we went with on page 35! -Kat Smalley

Strolling TrioWanders for LoveLee Pondell Trio keeps Valentine’s events moving

Get ThemLee Pondell Trio

Strolling trio with violin, accordion, bass

Call 423-3820 to book for your event.

Love is in the air…or by your table…or at your event when the Lee Pondell trio strikes a tune. What better way to take Valentine’s Day up a notch?

Far from stagnant in either repertoire or range, the group plays a vast selection of music, all the while on the move.

“Our trio plays at the tables—we move around from table to table taking requests,” says Founder Leo Pondelick, a former Millikin University violin and conducting professor, Parkland College orchestra conductor and school music teacher. “Everything is on the spot, so it definitely keeps things interesting.”

Leo plays violin, with the trio rounded out by Larry Oseland on accordion and Joe Kohlrus on bass.

Fortunately between the three members they can fulfill most requests, from showtunes to pop standards and popular music. “There are some things that never die: The Sound of Music, South Pacific, Oklahoma!” says Leo, a Chicago Conservatory of Music graduate who came to Decatur 42 years ago. “If we’re at a table people might ask for a foxtrot or want to get up and waltz for their anniversary or such.”

A longtime fixture at company events and private parties alike, particularly around holidays such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day, the trio has made a name with their unique lilting style and motion.

Previously they played a weekly gig at Jumer’s in Champaign, and they’ve played the Springfield Sangamo Club’s exclusive members-only Christmas party for an incredible 34 years.

“There’s always quite a bit of work at Christmastime—some [other] dates we’ve played for 12 or 14 years,” says Leo. “And we play several Valentine’s Day engagements as well; private parties and the South Side Country Club Valentine’s Party.”

With a few decades of courting Cupid under his belt, what does Leo suggest when a young amour wants to impress? The classics got that way for a reason, says this guru of gooeyness. “Fascination, Moon River, I Love You Truly, the old standards are always popular,” says Leo. His secret weapon? A Hungarian gypsy tune, a Czárdás by the composer Monti. “It’s a regular request and a favorite.”

Who knows? Put the Lee Pondell Trio on your side, and love may just stroll into your life. Only one way to find out!

THE FOOD DUDE10

I’m quickly learning that these items are worth exploring. This is not the place to get caught up in your favorite and never branch out! As they say on their menu, “Try one of our Signature Selections and escape the ordinary.”

If you really want to bust out of the norm, keep your eyes open for their “special, specials.” Yes, they have daily specials that you can find on their menu, but I’m talking about the unique items they come up with off the cuff. I’m specifically thinking back to the day I got the stuffed chicken lunch special. It was filled with ham, cheese and broccoli. Noticing a pattern? They like to fill awesome stuff with even more awesomeness. Win.

The biggest surprise hit me when I joined some friends for Sunday brunch. When we walked in, their buffet was an explosion of options right before us. I immediately started planning whether I wanted to start with breakfast, lunch or dessert. My mind was spinning before we even sat down. There were four of us, but there was still too much to taste it all. You guess it and they’ll probably have it on their breakfast, salad, lunch or desert bars, but the one option that we couldn’t pass up was the made-to-order omelets and crepes.

How can you pass up a custom omelet made right before you by Benny himself? You can see the fresh ingredients and decide what to include right there while it’s cooking. I went the crepe route and had a wonderfully fresh, strawberry-filled crepe with whipped cream. I’m pretty sure that when Sunday rolls around, I’ll have a hankering for that crepe again.

There’s a new grill in town, and it didn’t take long for Benny’s to become a sizzling hot spot. My curiosity was piqued the second I saw the sign go up outside the restaurant on East Pershing. Benny’s Grill. Could it be? THE Benny? As in Tuscany Steak and Pasta House’s Benny? Well, it’s true.

Of course, as Food Dude, it is my duty to put in the research time and give folks the full report. I’ve stepped up to the plate and put Benny’s to the test on a number of occasions, and I’m becoming pretty familiar with the Lunch fare in particular. It’s such a comfortable, casual place with cuisine that doesn’t disappoint; I just can’t help but go back.

Can I just start by saying they have free popcorn... no matter when you stop by? Fresh popped and bottomless. Definitely a great perk, but the Burgers are where it’s at. If I had to guess, it probably has something to do with the fact that they grind 100% of their pure beef burger daily from fresh, quality ground chuck.

When you’re starting from the freshest ingredients and combining flavors like Benny can do, you’re on the right track. Two burgers quickly emerged as my go-to’s. First up: Dani’s Mad Daffy Burger. I wouldn’t normally gravitate toward a chicken burger, and truth be told I stole a bite from a friend the first go-around and was sold. The chicken is superb, topped with lettuce and tomato, and has a perfect touch of heat from pepper jack cheese.

My number one burger is the Bleu Lucy, though. I have a soft spot for bleu cheese, and this one is stuffed full. They literally build a pocket of Bleu cheese in the middle of the burger and grill it perfectly so the cheese is just melted. Heaven!

As it turns out, both of these burgers are among the Benny’s “Signature Selections,” so

$15-19 from Novel IdeasAre you looking for a solmate? These socks are crafted from recycled cotton and "mismatched with care" in Vermont. I ran into these spiffy socks at Novel Ideas in downtown Decatur. They're all mismatched but if you can't get on-board with that, just buy two pair and do a flip-flop!

SOLMATE SOCKS™

Just a little something we ran across and wanted to share.

You can find solmate hats, scarves and socks including kids' sizes in-store or online at novelideasgifts.com. Here's the best part... adults get a pair; youths get a pair and a spare; babyies get two pair and a spare. Let's be honest: we've all lost our fair share of socks in the laundry. It's a brilliant idea, really. As they say at solmate socks; "Life's too short for matching socks."

TROY HAYES is a former sportswriter at the Herald & Review and currently is a co-host of “The Aric Lee Show,” heard each week day from 3-6p on ESPNDecatur 1050 AM “The Fan” (WDZ). Troy likes water, great causes and a quick towel.

There’s a moment – just a brief moment – that some participants doubt themselves before jumping into freezing water at the Law Enforcement Torch Run’s Polar Plunge at Lake Decatur.

And why wouldn’t they? It is winter after all. Still, hundreds flock to brace themselves for near hypothermia to benefit the Special Olympics.

It’s almost time for the 10th Annual Polar Plunge just outside the Beach House restaurant, and for a measly $75 donation, you could be part of this chilling endeavor.

Almost 400 participated in the ninth version of the event last year, and coordinator Joanie Keyes is confident the event will draw even more when folks take the plunge at noon on March 3rd this year.

“I think people just love it because it’s such a unique event. And some take it as a dare to get in the cold water,” she said. “You have to be a little crazy to do it, and some people see that as a sort of challenge.” Drew Minton took the dare last year and claims he barely wavered.

“The coldest part really is the waiting on the beach to get in the water. They called our group and we waited for what seemed like 30 minutes to get in. You kind of wonder what you’re doing there for a second,” said Minton, who was part of Cody Sheets’ group of 38 – the “Divin’ Deep’” – last year. ”But it’s a great time and it is not nearly as bad as you think it’s going to be. It’s also for a great cause.”

Everyone must collect $75 in donations before plunging, and all monies offered go directly to the budget for Special Olympics in Macon, Logan, Moultrie and Christian Counties. There are contests for craziest costumes sponsored by Thrive! Everyone gets a Polar Plunge hoodie as an incentive. You’ll also get a Tervis tumbler

Valentine's Day?Here's a question designed to make you flop sweat: “What should we do for Valentine's Day?” What are the expectations? Do I need to plan something? Is this a trap?

We lurked around some Decatur hot spots, including Spare Time Lanes during Melanie Schelling's Customer Appreciation Party, and asked people what they will be doing to celebrate Valentine's Day.

Come out to watch kids slap a puck for a cause in the Decatur Youth Hockey Association’s (DYHA) Tournament of Friends at the Decatur Civic Center Ice Arena February 17-19.

Started more than 20 years ago to remember a former hockey player, Geoffrey Geoghegan, who died as an adult in an apartment fire, the event focuses on family-oriented fun competition.

Made up of teams of 9- and 10-year olds, the tournament draws from all over the state. This year’s event will feature Decatur’s two Squirt travel teams plus teams from locations like southern Illinois, Geneva, Springfield, and Danville.

But don’t let the fact that they’re called “Squirts” fool you. These kids have big skills and big goals. “I want to play through high school and play college hockey…and play in the semi pros and then go to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins,” says 9-year-old Dakota Miloser, a right wing on the Decatur Flames Squirt AA travel team.

With opportunities for kids from age 4 through high school, the DYHA puts possibilities in front of players from an early age, something that appeals to kids and parents alike. “Hockey has been

a sport that has been in our family for years,” says Dakota’s mom Lisa. “Dakota started with the Beginner learn to skate/learn to play program at the Civic Center when he was just shy of four. He did 3 years of house team before moving to the travel team.”

That’s exactly what the program is built to do, says long-time hockey participant and DYHA President Bill Pickerill. “We start with a foundation at the Beginner level to build a program, and we just get them to come have a good time and move on from there.”

If numbers are any indicator, fun is full scale even at the smallest level. The 4-9-year-old Beginner learn to skate program now has more than 30 kids in the second session (sessions start in October and January).

“We just get them out on the ice and come up with creative games, not just hockey, to teach fundamentals,” says Derek Carter, who co-coaches with Bill Sheffer. “We’re teaching forward and back, basic skills; with games like tag and dodge ball they learn a lot of starting, stopping, turning.”

At the Mite level (ages 8 and under), things get even more exciting as “everybody’s touching the puck,” says Coach Jaymie Brandenburg. “We’re working on skill development—skating, stick handling, shooting and passing.”

Travel teams like Dakota’s take it up a

notch, and regular practices, games and events like the Tournament of Friends help foster good sportsmanship, skills and of course, “It’s all about having fun,” says Bill.

Perhaps part of this tournament’s long-running history is its ability to provide entertainment for all, from the audiences watching fast action on the ice, to 50/50s and raffles featuring prizes galore, to Saturday night’s free pizza party by Pizza Hut for the kids, plus a free open skate from 8 to 9:30 pm.

“I know of no other tournament around that provides as much as we do for those who participate,” says Tournament Chair and DYHA Secretary Kim Taylor. “Many tournaments are simply that...games and no other events that promote socializing and bonding of the many hockey organizations that participate.”

It’s no wonder the event draws by the hundreds. Just in players alone, organizers anticipate approximately 200. Factor in parents, siblings, coaches and

fans, and attendance could reach nearly 500, some estimate.

Along with family and fun, frozen in it all remains this undeniably positive underlying framework. “Hockey teaches teamwork in a family-oriented environment,” says Derek. “It teaches integrity, responsibility…all the things you want to teach to your kid.”

Limber up and catch a limo to the new Mt. Zion Convention Center on February 4th to hit the dance floor in style. You may be thinking to yourself, "It's a bit early for a Valentine's date," but who knows, you might score a second date on Valentine's Day if you play your cards right. Take your sweetheart to this event and chances are, you will.

Whether you're just looking for a night out or if you're searching for the perfect place to hold your special event, there couldn't be a better way to get the full experience. The Convention Center is pulling out all the stops to make this a special evening. V&M Digital DJ's will bring the tunes and serve as emcees for the evening, and Elite Entertainment will set a mood with special lighting. Guyla Pilger from As You Wish Events Planning will lay down the Valentine's vibe as the event decorator, and you can capture it all with photos in a Forever Memories photo booth.

“We just want people to come, enjoy the food, dance, and have fun,” commented Jennifer Camden, Marketing Director for the Mt. Zion

Convention Center. “It gives everyone something to do a week before Valentine’s Day. We will have some door prizes, and our DJ is working on fun contests.”

A little light-hearted dancing should do the trick and extra contests and prizes don't hurt. Combine the festivities with the custom fare from Secret Recipes, the Center's exclusive caterer, and you can't go wrong.

The buffet style dinner starts at 6p and includes shrimp cocktail, tossed or caesar salad, rolls and butter, penne alfredo, grilled salmon with dill sauce, southern style green beans, herb roasted potatoes, and prime rib.

No Valentine's Dinner would be complete without the sweets, so plan to save room for a variety of cheesecakes and assorted tortes. The evening is exclusively for adults 21 and over, and each guest receives one complimentary bottle of beer or a glass of wine—yet another special touch to make the evening memorable.

To those who know Jennifer Camden, it comes as no surprise that she's created this special Valentine's event; the holiday has a special place in her heart. Camden got engaged on Valentine's Day, and she and her husband tied the knot a year later on their anniversary. Tickets for the Valentine's Dinner and Dance are $50/couple, $30/single. The event isn't just for couples, though, and tables of eight can be reserved for $200.

The next Bridal Expo wasn’t until a month before my wedding,” explained Camden. This Expo is designed for brides like her and anyone else who wants to see new area vendors.
