From the EditorJust after the new year, on a cold and slightly wet Sunday afternoon a group of around twenty folk gathered in a house on Queen Street. Most had met before but none under the circumstances that gathered them there that afternoon.

The Village Voice had its first gathering of volunteers; the deliverers, the folderers, . twitterers, the chief delivery organiser and yours truly gathered to toast each other and quaff a glass or two of wine or fruit juice.

Sadly not everyone could attend but it was good to see people there who I didn’t realise were involved and we shared tales and found out how the whole intricate operation that is the Village Voice actually works.

A very pleasent afternoon and a lovely way to thank those who give their spare time to bring you this esteemed organ to your door or inbox. We took a photo, and it’s at the foot of the next column. Pete Hawkins

Lost Ring

On December 28th I lost my 3 stone diamond ”engagement” ring, whilst

I was out delivering Village Voices to the houses down Church Lane, along Commercial Road, around Old Bulls Court to Markeygate then along Church Street.

It is very precious to me as my late husband Rod gave it to me on the eve of our wedding - the only ring he ever gave me. If you have any information about it please let me know.

Thank you

Adventure FilmsThe third annual Hope Valley Adventure Film Festival (HVAFF) is set to take place on Saturday 25th Feb at Hope Valley College. This has become a popular event in the local calendar and this year will feature a mix of award winning films, lectures and activities as well as a mini film making competition, art exhibition, the ‘famous’ HVAFF raffle and of course great food and beer. It’s a day not to be missed!

HVAFF is an affordable day out for outdoor enthusiasts and families and is a fund raising event, with all profits used to improving facilities at Hope Valley College.

During the day the films will include selections from the ‘Best of ShAFF’ and the ‘Best of Kendal’ as well as the exciting and fast moving ‘Kendal Shorts’ and ‘ShAFF Shorts’ taken from the best films at the UK’s biggest adventure film festivals. The activities will include indoor caving, bouldering and slacklines as well as access to the outdoor mountain bike track.

A major attraction this year is the evening lecture by ex Welsh Rugby International turned mountaineer Richard Parks, who climbed the highest mountain on each of

the 7 continents and skied the last degree to both the North and South Poles all within 7 months, a world first and dubbed the ‘737 Challenge’. This inspiring lecture is delivered with humour and humility and is beautifully illustrated with both images and film clips from the ‘737 Challenge’ film.

To buy tickets and see the full schedule go to www.hvaff.co.uk. Tickets are also available over the counter at Outside in Hathersage or at Hope Valley College on the day (if not already sold out!).

Marathon Madness

Local runner David Brindley is in training to complete the 26.2 miles of the Virgin

London Marathon on Sunday 22nd April 2012 for Get Kids Going, who provide general and sports wheelchairs for disabled children and young people.

David chose Get Kids Going for his sponsorship because he really wanted to run to help disabled and young children to get going. Especially those kids who can’t even walk, never mind run. The children desperately need wheelchairs to get about and compete in sports such as marathons! The average cost of a sports wheelchair is £4000.

David is also looking for local businesses to support him and he will display their branding on his running kit and website.

For more information contact David on 07767 886045 or to make a donation visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/davidbrindley.

£25 - 040; £20- 024; £15 - 084;

£10 - 258; £5 - 111; £5 - 122

Congratulations to all the winners.

There are only two more draws this season and then the collectors will be out to encourage you to join the club again for 2012-2013. Thanks to all of you who have changed to paying by Standing Order through the Bank. It does make things easier for our dwindling number of collectors, so if you haven’t done so already, please consider it.

It costs only £12 a year to join the 200+ Club and this makes you a member of Tideswell and District Community Association. There are money prizes to be won each month. Four times a year we add

a £50 prize to the normal amounts above and twice a year there is a £100 prize too. While February is a “normal” month, March sees a £50 top prize.

The 200+ Club is the fund raising arm of the Community Association and by joining you are helping to fund projects, provide the colourful flowers troughs around the village and stage the annual Bonfire and Fireworks display.

By joining you can make a difference to our community. It costs so little but can give so much.

If you are in a group or society within our district ( land line codes beginning 871, 872, 873 ) and would like some funding with a project just get in touch and tell us about it.

Do go to the website www.tideswellonline.co.uk. to find out more.

You can phone Dorothy on 871661 or Judy on 872408 to get involved.

Tideswell Theatre

Tideswell’s winter and spring continues in the 10th year of bringing

professional theatre, music and poetry to the village. The idea started with Tideswell Community Players’ professionally directed production of Romeo and Juliet in the Chancel of Tideswell Church in 2001, assisted by European grant money. The play was directed by Gerry Flanagan of Shifting Sands Theatre Company. In 2002 Tideswell Theatre was started. Ten years on and 60 visiting shows later, there are four more shows coming in the first part of 2012.

On 10th March Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers will fill Tideswell Church with the sound Japanese Drumming for a truly spectacular evening. This fantastic ensemble, based in Glasgow actually, has toured widely, performing up and down the UK and Europe, including the O2 Stadium. They performed at Buxton Opera House last year so you might have seen them or know someone who did. Tickets are already selling fast to people who have seen them before.

The concert integrates powerful taiko

rhythms with tightly knit choreography and theatrical and lighting effects. The concert is musically varied, with a range of taiko drums from the precise rhythms on the small high-pitched Shime drums to the huge powerful beats on the Odaiko big drum, which penetrate right through the chest, requiring an impressive feat of stamina and endurance to play. There is also some dance in addition to the graceful & choreographed movement of the drummers themselves. There is a variety of

percussion instruments, the sound of which envelops the audience. It also incorporates the haunting melodies of the bamboo flute.

The concert is not “just drumming” - it’s a complete aural & visual experience which captivates the audience from start to finish. The tension is palpable in the atmosphere, and the audience are left clamouring for more.

Tickets £9.50 and £7.50 soon on sale at Tideswell Post Office and Litton Shop. Bookings on [email protected] or 01298 871063. Brought

to the village through Live and Local. More information at www.taiko.co.uk.

On 29th March Cotton Grass Theatre bring their new show Thin Air to the village. Written by award winning local author Berlie Docherty this eerie show is about lost airmen on the Derbyshire moors and their stories.

Parish Council Matters

The January meeting of Tideswell Parish Council, was attended by

Jennifer Bower, the Tideswell member on the Derbyshire Dales District Council (DDDC). She addressed the meeting in the Public Participation section and reported on developments at the DDDC such as the three Forum meetings. Tideswell is a part of the Northern Forum, on which Jennifer serves as Vice Chairman. The current CEO Mr. D.Wheatcroft has retired and Jennifer is on the selection committee to appoint his replacement.

Negotiations between the council and DDDC continue regarding the public toilets. The integral bus shelter which belongs to the County Council also requires negotiation separately.

The Cemetery group sadly reported that residents are dumping garden waste on the site. This is not only disrespectful of a place where people come to tend the graves of loved ones, but also incurs a cost to the Parish Council, using resources which could be well used elsewhere. Please recycle your garden waste. Relatives who visit the graves do not always realise that the bin by the gate is for them to use. Dead flowers are often left by the water butt. The bin is emptied regularly and is placed at the gateway so that the binmen can have easy access. Please feel free to use it.

A misunderstanding needs to be cleared regarding the Parish Council’s role in financial matters. The Council does not and cannot hold money for other organisations in Tideswell. Support may be given to local

groups, donations and grants may be made, but the Parish Council cannot in law act as banker to any group, for any reason. Monies which may be sent to the Council for a specific purpose will be used for that purpose only. An instance where money due to the Youth Steering Group was sent to the Parish Council in error by Sport England was an unfortunate mistake. The money was immediately given to the Youth Steering Group.

The Planting group reported a good response to the previous appeal in the Village Voice for offers of plants. The large bed in the Gratton/ Bank Square Garden has been planted with perennials donated by residents. The flower beds at the Fountain Square can be similarly planted. Any interested parties please contact Councillor Mary Landon on 871817.

Mary also reported back on a possible beacon for the Queen’s Jubilee. After discussion, it was agreed that a Jubilee Committee be instigated. Any interested individuals or organisations, please contact Councillor Sue Barber on 871644. It is hoped that a team similar to the team which organised the 2002 celebrations will help to co-ordinate a day to remember for everyone in Tideswell.

Another celebration for the future relies on you. Please nominate your local heroes for the Community Award. There will be an award for people under 25 years old and another for people over that age. Please send your nominations to Parish Clerk Lesley Bramwell on 872000. The awards will be presented at the Annual Parish meeting later in the year.

Take a Fauré into singing

Are you someone who enjoys singing? Would like the opportunity to try

singing and performing with a large enthusiastic group of singers? Or perhaps you are a member of a choir who would like to join in this one day event?

On Saturday 31 March, Tideswell singers will be hosting a day to ‘Come and Sing’ Fauré’s Requiem in the beautiful Cathedral

of the Peak, in Tideswell, and are inviting participation from individuals and groups

This beautiful work has become a much loved piece for performers and listeners since it was first heard in 1888. Thanks to its familiarity it has long been a favourite for ‘scratch performance’.

Tideswell Singers consider themselves a community choir in the broadest sense. With open membership, and no auditions, singers come from a radius of over 20 miles to create a community of friends, including several family units. The choir is made up of both men and women, with an age range from 20 to 80. Tideswell singers perform regularly, often collaborating with other organisations in community events. They aim to share their love of singing with all members of the community, and are looking forward to welcoming people to this workshop day, which will be followed by a public performance in the evening.

The choir will be accompanied by young soloists, organ and chamber ensemble, and together will give a meaningful and quality performance, after which there will be an opportunity to socialise, with wine and canapes provided by Tideswell School of Food.

Fees for the day are £12.50 for singers ( £10 if booked before 20 February), plus £2 for music hire. Audience tickets for the evening performance at 6 pm will be £5. For further details, please visit Tideswell Singers website www.tideswellsingers.org.uk or telephone Terry Smith (01298 872138) or Gill Howland (07976 604313).

At t’Flicks

This month, Tideswell Cinema has chosen a German film (with subtitles),

to be shown on Thursday 23rd at 7.30pm in the George. It is “The Edukators”, described by the New York Times as ‘a deft comedy of romantic confusion’.

In brief, a wealthy family comes home from their holiday to find their home has been broken into. Nothing has been stolen but the furniture is stacked in the centre of the room!

It is the work of three young anti-capitalist activists who are doing this as a form of protest against the system. Complications multiply when they are forced into kidnap

when an executive arrives home unexpectedly, and a love triangle between the three of them begins to emerge!

Membership can be taken out for the evening for £4.75, and film goers are invited to eat first, with a discount of 20% off the cost of their meal.

Stay Safe and SecureSeveral burglaries have been reported recently across the High Peak & Derbyshire Dales area, where the properties have been unoccupied, either while the occupants have been away for a few days or where the property is unoccupied for other reasons.

Vulnerable homes and vehicles could be an easy target. Derbyshire Police are encouraging residents to think about their home security and urge people take precautions to help reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

Opportunistic burglars usually target homes that they believe to be empty or insecure. By following the simple home security tips below, you could deter burglars from targeting your property.

• If you go away, try to get a trusted neighbour or friend to look after the house, preventing the build up of mail, parking a car on the driveway and perhaps drawing the curtains daily.

• Use timer switches for lights or radios. You can then set these to come on and light up your house even if you are out. Timer switches are inexpensive and ensure empty homes are not left in darkness.

• Always lock your doors and windows. Ensure that back doors are locked as well as any gates or access ways.

• Cancel newspapers and milk deliveries if you are away from your home for a few days.

• Keep any sheds, outhouses and garages locked - your tools could be used by criminals to enter your home.

• Neighbourhood Watch is an effective way to keep your home and community safe. Call Derbyshire police on 101 for more information of how to join or set up a scheme in your area.

To report any suspicious activity call Derbyshire police on 101.

Dye your Diesel

More businesses across the Derbyshire Dales have signed up to a crime

prevention campaign aimed at reducing fuel thefts.

Local firms are being offered to take part in the scheme which involves specialist dye being put into diesel tanks so it can be easily identifiable when sold on or tracked by police.

Warning signs are also installed at businesses where diesel has been security marked to raise awareness of the initiative.

The campaign, named Operation Dynamo, has been launched by the Safer Derbyshire Dales Community Safety Partnership, which includes Derbyshire Constabulary and Derbyshire Dales District Council.

Sgt. Phil Hollington said: “Fuel theft is currently low in the Dales, but we are conscious that high prices might attract interest in storage tanks and lorry fuel tanks. That’s why we would encourage more businesses to sign up to the campaign, where we will help them take on board measures which will deter thieves.”

The first prominent company to sign up to the security campaign at the end of last year was Tarmac, at the Dene Quarry site at Matlock.

Three more Dales businesses have now joined the campaign; Bleaklow Industries based at Backdale Quarry, Longstone Edge and road haulage companies K & H Bakewell Ltd and RD Geeson Ltd of Middleton by Wirksworth.

Jim Hollingworth from K & H Bakewell Ltd. said: “This is a great opportunity to support a really useful Community Safety Partnership initiative. Fuel theft is a serious issue and we can help keep people safe by warning thieves of the potential dangers of trespassing onto working sites to obtain fuel illegally.”

The dyed fuel can also be identified by HM Revenue and Customs during their dip testing checks in the county.

Derbyshire Dales District Council Leader Councillor Lewis Rose OBE, who is also Chairman of Derbyshire Dales Community Safety Partnership, said: “We are proud of the Dales’ superb record as one of the lowest crime areas in the country, but we are not complacent. We are delighted more businesses are signing up to Operation Dynamo because initiatives such as this deter thieves and help us to maintain that record.”

Sgt. Hollington added: “We would also urge people to contact us should they see anyone acting suspiciously in their local areas, as any information, no matter how small, could help us to prevent and detect crime in the Dales.”

Businesses interested in signing up to Operation Dynamo should contact Karen Cooper, Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Crime and Disorder Reduction Officer on 01629 761187 or email [email protected].

To report any suspicious activity contact Derbyshire police on 101, the non-emergency number, or alternatively to pass on information about crime anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Living History

Tideswell Living History Group. We are meeting in ‘The Star’ on Wednesday

15th February at 7.30 pm for a social evening, all are welcome so please come along for a chat and share your memories, we will not be recording anything at this stage.

We will know by Thursday 1st March if we have been successful in our bid for funding from the Lottery so we have scheduled the following meeting to be Tuesday 6th March 7.30 pm at The Horse & Jockey.

Hopefully it will be a celebration, so come along and raise a glass with us, however if we have not been successful we still intend to go ahead with our project and it will be ‘full steam ahead’. Hope to see you at both meetings.

Later...at The George

An eclectic mix of music, song and words is coming to Upstairs at The

George Hotel in Tideswell on Friday 10th February.

Tideswell’s second Open Mic Night, where people who want to get up and perform before an audience have the chance to do

so, starts at 9 pm in the newly refurbished upstairs room at The George.

It is organised by Tideswell Arts Festival, which brought the popular week of entertainment to the village last June in the Parish Church, including the first Open Mic Night. It is intended that these evenings are held every two months.

The call is out to anyone who wants to play, sing, recite or read; from Tideswell or further afield: get in touch and book a slot or take pot luck on the night!

And to the audience: it is a free evening of entertainment which might include all types of music including folk, jazz, world, as well as storytelling and poetry. Just turn up and enjoy yourselves, or maybe come earlier and eat first before enjoying the performances. Come along!

Further information about this and future Open Mic evenings from [email protected] or phone/text 07999 350384. Find Later at The George on Facebook and Twitter.

Lost and Found

The next All-Age Worship service at Fountain Square Church will be held

on Sunday, February 15th at 10.30 am

The theme will be ‘Lost and Found’. If you enjoy a mystery why not come along and find out who or what was lost and how they were found. We would love to see you so do come.

Mark My Words!

Many of us may have some awareness of what the Bible tells us of the life of

Jesus, but if we read it at all, it is probably only in bite-size sections.

On Saturday 11th February at 7.30pm in the Institute (behind the Parish Church), there is the rare opportunity to hear a professional recording of the whole of Mark’s Gospel in one sitting.

It will be played in twenty five minute ‘acts’, with two short intervals for drinks and nibbles. The event is free, and open to all.

Help for HeroesDear Editor

As the mothers of two soldiers currently serving in Afghanistan, we have arranged a forthcoming charity evening in aid of ‘Help For Heroes’.

The charity night will take place at the Horse & Jockey on the evening of Saturday 24th March.

We have secured the services of, (in our humble opinion) ,Tideswell’s premier disc jockeys, Wainy & Wrighty, for the occasion.

Tickets for the night are priced at £5.00, please note this is NOT an entrance fee, but covers the cost of the buffet & entry in a general knowledge quiz.

Tickets will be available from the Horse & Jockey, Peaches, and Tideswell Stores. All proceeds from the event will go towards ‘H4H’.

Shopka BeautyI would like to express sincere thanks to all members of Artability and all those who generously made gift os money, when visiting the display of Shopka in our beautiful church this Christmas. The proceeds of which it was decided to donate to the bluebell Wood Children’s hospice.

I really feel that some mention must be made to of this wonderful display produced by the group under the direction of John Firth based upon a idea from Cracow in Poland.

The imagination, skills and use of different everyday materials was quite amazing, bringing a riot of colour and sparkle to celebrate the Nativity in such an unusual way.

Perusal of the visitors book revealed generous comments from as far afield as new Zealand and the USA, in addition to many parts of Britain. Well done Artability.

February 2012 32

Tideswell History Club

On January 12th, we were treated to an excellent talk about one of the main

contributors to the Industrial Revolution and who ended up being a local benefactor.

One of the main things that was holding back progress in the early 1800s, was that very few fittings in engineering were either standardised or interchangeable. Until then machine parts had been made by very skilled individuals but, as such, could not be easily replaced by another engineer. Whitworth helped to sort that out by introducing the B.S.W. (British Standard Whitworth thread) for the humble nut and bolt.

He was born and raised in Stockport, but travelling down to his apprenticeship in South Derbyshire he fell in love with Darley Dale and Stancliffe House in particular.

Always looking to advance his skills, he enrolled with the great Henry Maudesley in London and having learned all there was there, moved on to other notable engineers. He strived for accuracy and perfection, with the motto - ‘let’s try it’. However, being pretty arrogant and ego-centric he didn’t make many friends, but in America he found that although their machine tools were inferior to ours, their attitudes to work and man-management were much better.

Realising that it was non-standardisation that was holding back progress, he set to work on the threads of nuts and bolts. Eventually, after many trials, he cut the threads 55 degrees apart and rounded the tops and bottoms at a radius of 0.1373 times the pitch. Manufacturing across the

world, would never be the same again.

Although he was such an awkward character, even the Army had to approach him to improve their Enfield Rifle- and with characteristic bluntness, he told them that at 0.57 inch bore, their bullets were too short and too wide! He was later associated with a gun that would fire a 250lb shell for six miles and then pierce 4 inches of armour plating. Similarly, he was associated with a planing machine that had an accuracy to one millionth of an inch -and it could detect if someone placed their warm hand on the work-piece!

He had made his fortune and in his own way he wanted to be benevolent and philanthropic. So that is why today we have Whitworth Park and Whitworth Art Gallery, Owens College and the late lamented U.M.I.S.T. in Greater Manchester. Here in Derbyshire we have Whitworth Institute and Whitworth Hospital in Darley Dale. Here, he built good houses for his work people, but ever the curmudgeon, he built them without front doors so that the women couldn’t stand gossiping.

He managed to buy Stancliffe House and although the distance from the Lodge to the house is only half a mile, he contrived to make the drive, one mile long, just to impress his visitors. If you ever wondered why the road through Darley Dale is so straight - it is because Whitworth re-designed the existing roads so that he could get to work quicker. What a guy!

You would be most welcome to come to our next talk --”Lead in the Veins” -the remarkable story of mining in the Great Hucklow area --by Peter Miles. (February 9th at 8 pm in the Institute).

Brian Woodall
