SUCCESS STORY OF PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTERNSHIP MODEL

There is a huge demand for good quality fodder seeds asfeeding of cultivated fodders has a steep advantage in the economicsof intensive livestock farming. TANUVAS initiated a Public PrivatePartnership (PPP) approach at KVK, Namakkal to meet the demand. In this approach, prospective farmers are initially trained at KVK,Namakkal and are advised to cultivate fodder crops viz. multicutfodder sorghum (COFS 29), Hedge Lucerne, fodder cowpea (COFC8), Stylosanthus hamata and Cenchrus in half an acre. At theend of one year, each farmer can earn Rs. 25,000/- by producing100 Kgs of fodder seeds. In addition, the farmer can integrate thefodder seed production unit with an intensive goat or sheep farmingand can utilize the 2,500 Kg of dry fodder produced. Initially onlyten farmers from Namakkal joined and signed a MoU, but today32 farmers from 4 districts have signed the MoU. The Departmentof Animal Husbandry signed a MoU with KVK, Namakkal to procurethe fodder seeds for the state fodder development schemes.
