• Beans: These fiber-rich legumes help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Red kidney beans are one of the best sources of fiber, with a whopping 13 grams per cup — about half the amount of fiber you need in a day.

Source: Journal of the American College of Nutrition, June 2004. Take the idea of a home gym to a whole new level — and find something different to do in any room while you’re working on other things. You’ll get active, and it won’t take up any time at all.

• Kitchen —While chatting on the phone, do heel raises or leg lifts while lightly balancing one hand on the counter.

• Bathroom —While brushing your teeth do “speed squats.” With feet, hip-width apart, bend at the knee and hip while keeping your upper body tall. Come down (no lower than knee level) and up as quickly as you can while still main-

February is American Heart Month

February is American Heart Month and it’s time to continue that New Year’s Resolution of getting in better shape! You don’t have to sacrifice taste to keep your heart healthy. There are some good-for-your-heart foods that just might surprise you.

• Cheese: In moderation, cheese can be a good thing. It contains calcium that can keep your blood pressure under control. Cheese often contains saturated fats, so you may want to go for low-fat or part-skim types. Try not to eat more than an ounce or two a day.

• Garlic: The cloves contain a chemical called allicin that has been shown to relax blood vessels, which means your blood can flow smoothly. To get the big-gest bang, crush — don’t chop — cloves before cooking.

• Grape Juice: The purple kind from your childhood has the same heart-healthy compounds as red wine to help increase HDL (good) cholesterol, reduce your risk of developing blood clots, and relax your blood vessels.

• February - the month of love: cards, flowers – and chocolate: When it comes to chocolate, you may want to go for the dark kind with a high cocoa con-tent. It tends to be loaded with epicat-echin, which can keep cholesterol from gathering in blood vessels and reduce the risk of blood clots.

taining control (and keep-ing toothbrush/toothpaste in

your mouth!). If you have trou-ble with coordination, you may

want to try heel raises.

• tV room —See how many bicycle legs (lean back, legs in air,

pedal motion) you can do during the commercial breaks. Try to increase the number of pedals each break.

• room to room — Play chase with the dog, the kids, or the cat. Or, when the phone rings, race whoever is around to see who can get to it first (winner gets a foot rub!).

HEALTHY RECIPEAlmond-stuffed ChickenSource: Maureen Callahan, Cooking Light 3/09

The nutty, cheesy filling spices up chicken breasts and is a snap to make. Toast the almonds in a skillet before you cook the chicken and you’ll have just one pan to clean. Serve with couscous and green beans.

Ingredients:

• 1/3 cup light garlic-and-herbs spread-able cheese (such as Boursin light)

• 1/4 cup slivered almonds, toasted, coarsely chopped, and divided

• 3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, divided

• 4 (6-ounce) skinless, boneless chicken breast halves

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

• 1 1/2 teaspoons butter

Preparation:

1. Combine spreadable cheese, 3 table-spoons almonds, and 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley in a small bowl. Set aside.

2. Cut a horizontal slit through thickest por-tion of each breast half to form a pocket. Stuff 1 1/2 tablespoons almond mixture into each pocket; secure each pocket with a wooden pick. Sprinkle chicken with salt and pepper.

3. Heat butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add chicken to pan; cook 6 minutes on each side or until done. Remove from pan; cover and let stand 2 minutes. Top chicken with remaining 1 ta-blespoon almonds and remaining 1 table-spoon parsley.

Hearts Apart is a deployment support group that brings families together that are experiencing the hardships of separation and deployment. This is an opportunity to network while learning valuable information that will aid in meeting the challenges of the military lifestyle. The weekly topics are based on the immedi-ate needs of the participants and include but are not limited to: stress management, single parenting, and the emotional cycle of deployment. Occasionally, we will invite representatives from other resources (such as New Parent Support, Exceptional Fam-ily Member Program, Life Long Learning, and Military Family Life Consultants) to provide the group with a better understanding of the additional programs and resources that are available to them. Children are welcome, however free childcare is available at the MCAS CDC with advance registration. To register or for more infor-mation, please contact Nicole Bright-Hardee at 228-7311 or email [email protected].

Congratulations to Maraya durham

Maraya won a $1,000 savings bond from the MCX’s Super Star Student program. Maraya is a 10th grader at Beaufort High School where she excels in all of her classes, but she particularly enjoys art and English. She intends to go to college once she graduates, but she’s keeping her options open as to which school. She would love to become an author just like her fa-vorite writer James Patterson.

MCCS HAPPENINGSFEBRUARY 2012

13 Payments May Affect retirees taxes Your 1099R tax statement includes 13 pay-ments this year. This is not a mistake. The pay schedule for retirees was adjusted in mid-2011 to comply with the 2011 National Defense Authorization Act. Because of the change in the law, military retired pay is now processed on the first day of the month. When that day falls on a weekend or national holiday, the pay date is moved to the previ-ous business day. This means your payment normally scheduled for 3 January 2012 was issued on 30 December 2011. As a result of the second payment in December, you were issued a total of 13 payments (for tax purpos-es) instead of the normal 12 in the 2011 tax year, which may increase your tax liability. Because 1 January is always a federal holi-day, going forward, DFAS will always process your January pay the previous December. So in 2012 and beyond, you will receive the nor-mal 12 pay checks. Please contact your tax advisor or the Inter-nal Revenue Service if you have further ques-tions on this subject.

data Breach Letters are being mailed from Science Appli-cations International Corporation (SAIC) to affected military clinic and hospital patients regarding a data breach involving personally identifiable and protected health informa-tion. On 14 September 2011 SAIC reported the loss of backup tapes containing elec-tronic health care records used in the mili-tary health system (MHS) to capture patient data. The data may include Social Security numbers, addresses and phone numbers, and some personal health data such as clini-cal notes, laboratory tests and prescriptions. There is no financial data such as credit card

or bank account information, on the backup tapes. The risk of harm to patients is judged to be low since retrieving the data on the tapes would require knowledge of, and access to, specific hardware and software and knowl-edge of the system and data structure. As a precaution, the Assistant Secretary of De-fense (Health Affairs) determined that SAIC should notify potentially impacted persons or households of this incident by letter. As directed by TRICARE Management Activ-ity (TMA), SAIC will provide credit monitor-ing and credit restoration services for one

year for patients requesting them. The credit restoration services being provided exceeds current industry standards for responding to a data breach. The SAIC Incident Response Center is available to answer your questions, including helping you with signing up for the credit monitoring, Monday through Friday from 9am to 6pm eastern time. Concerned patients should call the response center, to ask questions and verify authenticity of the letter, toll free: (855) 366-0140.

Behavioral Health

Alcohol as a sleeping Aid

Often alcohol is seen as a panacea, or a “cure all”. When folks are struggling to find ways to “wind down”, or prevent insomnia, sometimes a few drinks is seen as a quick answer to pro-duce a good night’s sleep.

Alcohol research reveals that although alcohol can initially deepen sleep during the early part of the night, it disrupts sleep patterns during the later part of the night (Journal: Alcoholism: Clinical &Experimental Research). This phe-nomenon is called: “Rebound Effect”.

Alcohol reduces the quality and restfulness of your sleep. This happens because alcohol’s ini-tial sedative effects are not stabilizing. As alco-hol leaves the body, the brain becomes agitat-ed and restless. When a brain is anesthetized by alcohol, it is similar to a beach ball being held underwater. As alcohol is metabolized, the brain is now similar to that same beach ball being released from underwater, thus, the “rebound effect”. The effect of alcohol on the brain simulates this pressure or force that produces this drastic swing leaving an individ-ual with: (1) More restlessness, (2) More inter-rupted sleep, (3) Lighter sleep (fewer periods of deep, restorative sleep), (4) Shorter sleep (wake up earlier). The overall effect of using alcohol as a sleep aid is less restorative sleep and a lack of refreshment and/or restfulness.

Suggestions: (1) Instead of using alcohol to manage stress, use healthier coping mecha-nisms, (2) Avoid using alcohol, caffeine, or tobacco a few hours before going to bed to avoid the “rebound” effect and (3) establish a routine that includes physical exercising, like yoga or stretching prior to bed time if anxious. If you are relying on alcohol to manage stress, sleep better, or for other coping reasons, as-sess your relationship with alcohol by visiting: http://www.aa-intergroup.org/ Dan Evans, [email protected] Prevention Specialist (AAPS)228-7752Behavioral Health Branch
