Message from the President Jay Daniel

Thanks to everyone who voted for the 2012 TCKRA Board of Directors. I am excited at the mix of long-time board members and (where did the time go) the younger generation. The mix of enthusiasm and experience should serve us well. The TCKRA is a constantly evolving club. Unlike many state clubs we are not limited to a single discipline. We are not the USCA, ICF, surf-ski or etc only club. We are the paddle sport race club of the entire State of Texas. Thanks to the 2011 TCKRA Board of Directors for their service and to Tommy Yonley for his leadership as president. If you get a chance, thank Mike Rendon for his hard work in getting the online registration set up and his work on the TCKRA Website, not to mention his service to the paddling community with Paddle24seven. We need you to join! The strength of the club is only as good as the members. If you are reading this and have not renewed your membership - do so. Get involved. Former State Champion Richard Steppe once said “it’s the cheapest social club you can join.” Besides that, if you think TCKRA Vice President and Membership Chairman Mike Vandeveer is tenacious in pursuing entrants to the Cuero Turkeyfest, you ain’t seen nothing yet. We need YOU! Step up and volunteer to help administer a race. All of the TCKRA races and all of the Non-TCKRA races depend on volunteers to put them on. One of the most disappointing things to read is a statement from someone telling someone else how they should have done it. Many of the folks volunteering are the same race after race. Thanks to Chris Stevenson for picking up the role of Newsletter Editor (mainly because he believes that he will find out who the Palmetto Hotline author is). There is not a more thankless job. It requires multiple e-mails and phone calls to get folks to send you an article by a deadline that passed days ago. I am excited about the racing year to come. I’d be more excited if I could be guaranteed it would keep raining. The first Town Lake Series race was well attended and the Texas Winter 100 just missed some great water by a day. And, while it is not a TCKRA race, the 50th Annual Texas Water Safari is this year. For some, this will consume their every waking moment while for others I’m sure they wish it would just go away. Whatever your discipline is there is a race out there for you. After all, the racing is secondary; the people you get to know and spend time with are what this is all about. I would have never thought when I signed up for that whitewater spring break trip, at the University formerly known as Southwest Texas State, and walked into Goynes Canoe Livery (now Spencer’s) and saw all of the cool racing stuff that I would have ever raced much less be at it 30 years later. See You on the River. Jay

Paddler Profile (Editor’s Note: In each edition of the 2012 Newsletter we will feature interesting and accomplished members of the Texas paddling community. If you would like to nominate someone to be featured in the Paddler Profile, please email their name and contact information to [email protected].) This edition’s featured paddler is Zoltán Mráz.

TCKRA: What’s your full name? Zoltán: Zoltán Lajos Mráz TCKRA: Where are you from originally,

where have you lived and where do you live now?

Zoltán: Born and raised in Hungary, escaped after the 1956 revolution at the age of 17. Ended up in Calambrone, Italy, in a refugee camp. From there I was shipped to Montreal, Canada where I lived ‘til I was transferred to Houston, Texas 22 years ago. For the past 20 years I have been living in Sugar Land, Texas.

TCKRA: How did you get started paddling?

Zoltán: In Hungary we lived in the 21st district of Budapest which is part of an island on the Danube, called Csepel. Water all around; us kids had no choice.

TCKRA: How did you get started racing? Zoltán: On the island we had two kayak and

canoe clubs. At one time or another I

had joined both. Before they let us race, we had to put in hundreds of kilometers training. My sprint racing in Hungary was very limited. I started serious sprint racing in Montreal at the Lachine Kayak & Canoe Club. My first ever marathon race I did was here in Texas in 1990.

TCKRA: What bodies of water do you

paddle most frequently? Zoltán: In Sugar Land I live in Sugar Mill

subdivision on Misty Lake, shaped like a finger lake with many coves. During the week I paddle approximately ten miles every morning, if weather permits. On weekends I try to paddle the San Marcos and Guadalupe Rivers. On occasion I go on river trips one to seven days at a time mostly on Texas rivers.

TCKRA: What is your favorite race? Zoltán: Texas Water Safari. TCKRA: What is the most interesting or

exotic race you have done? Zoltán: Texas Water Safari. TCKRA: What is the most interesting or

exotic location you have paddled?

Zoltán: Rio Bravo del Norte, 82.5 mile section of the Lower Canyons.

TCKRA: What is your favorite place to

paddle? Zoltán: If it's any indication, the main reason

I let my company transfer me from Toronto to the Houston office was the San Marcos River.

TCKRA: What kinds of boats do you

paddle? Zoltán: C1 and Solo Unlimited (Spencer) for

Racing, Penobscot open canoe for touring.

TCKRA: What kinds of paddles do you use?

Zoltán: Bent shaft and wings.

TCKRA: What is your training regimen? Zoltán: My training rule is to improve each

stroke, reach, rotation and to stay in shape.

TCKRA: What types of cross-training do

you do? Zoltán: Some weights and some cross-

country running. TCKRA: What kinds of food do you use

during training and racing? Zoltán: During training: fruits, energy gels

and experiment with new drink mixes. During racing: drink mix, which used to be Carbo Fuel, but changing over to mixes with higher protein content. Treats that change every year - something sweet, something sour and something salty. There is one treat never ever changes - tapioca pudding.

TCKRA: What are your significant

accomplishments in paddling? Zoltán: In Canada I did win many local

(Montreal) kayak sprint races, some Quebec provincial races, mostly K2 and K4, very few K1. At the Canadian Championship I have two silver medals in K2 and one bronze in K4. I did qualify to participate for the North American Championship in K4, but I was relocated to Vancouver, British Columbia. I moved back to Ontario where I received my National Coaching Certificate and joined the Mississauga Kayak & Canoe Club coaching team. Our club won the most points at the Canadian Championship twice and once second place while I was part of the team. I went back to racing in masters where I won a total of 11 first places at the Canadian Championship in War Canoe and C4 high kneel, K4 and K2. While in Montreal, we used to do the upper N.Y. Hudson River Derby, wild down river race (whitewater), I won K2 twice.

I started to race here in Texas in 1990. I have finished the Texas Water Safari 11 times (6-solo unlimited and 1-C1). I have one 9th overall and two 12th overall finishes. Races won: Texas Water Safari: 1-Solo Unlimited, 1-Aluminum (record breaking, 39hrs. 55min.), 2-Masters (both as solo). Texas River Marathon/The Prelim: 5-Solo Unlimited Masters winner. Jr. Texas Water Safari: 2-Solo Unlimited Senior, one was overall solo. State Championship: Masters (once). Buffalo Bayou: 1-Solo Unlimited, 1-Corporate Cup and 1-Mixed Class. Come and Take It: 1-Solo Unlimited, 1-Unlimited (record breaking), 1-Aluminum, 1-USCA Cruising Class.

I have finished many other Texas races.

Although I am not that proud of it (I can live with it), I am the oldest finisher of the Texas Water Safari. I was 71 at last year's finish, almost 72 since I was born on June 20, 1939.

TCKRA: What do you enjoy most about

paddling? Zoltán: The people associated with paddling,

the challenge of the river, scenery the river will take you to, clean air…well, no city smog, great workout.

TCKRA: Do you have any training or

racing goals and, if so, what are they?

Zoltán: Training is the fun part of racing. I try to put in the maximum amount of mileage. In racing my goal is to finish the Safari every year and start doing the CR100 as well.

TCKRA: Do you have any advice or

words of wisdom for paddlers just starting out?

Zoltán: Get quality equipment to start with - boat and paddle - if you don't, you will struggle from day one and will not get to like paddling. If you find out that paddling is not your cup of tea, you can always sell your equipment to one of us.

TCKRA: Do you have any advice or

words of wisdom for other racers who have been paddling for a while?

Zoltán: Always concentrate on the quality of your stroke - rotate from your waist, sit-up straight (a bent spine cannot rotate properly) and reach with your shoulder. If you want to go faster with the least amount of effort, cut down on the time you have your blade out of the water. End of stroke - snap that blade out of the water, quick rotation and back in the water. Without pulling harder your boat will speed up. As we get tired we have the tendency to slow down the rotation keeping the blade longer in the air - I know I do.

TCKRA: Any final words? Zoltán: I consider myself very lucky to be

part of the Texas paddlers, racers and river trip/campers. Besides racing I do many canoe trips on the Rio Grande, Pecos, Devil’s, Chama, Llano and many other rivers with different groups of very knowledgeable people of the rivers. Texas rivers have a lot to offer, scenery and history.

Here in Texas I made many good friends. Hope to keep all y'all.

Race Reports

HO-HO-HOcheim Run Erin Magee

Thanks to all that came out to play-it was a wonderful day! Mildred made a fashion statement in a button-down cowboy shirt for paddling and dining. Two separate shirts, of course. Shawn Boyett as his C2 sternman seemed to enjoy himself as Mike told stories of Gonzales Dam in the 2011 TWS, the MR340 in 2011, acupuncture and other adventures. The Hippie Chicks were all color coordinated with their boat including Mike...tiaras and top hats included. John Dupont in representation of the Big Red Bus, which we filled to capacity, identified himself as our shuttle service wearing a red paddling shirt as well. Thank you, John, for joining us paddling and eating; as well as being the shuttle driver. Mike Rendon dressed for a formal occasion in all black and paddling all carbon added class to our already existing pizzazz! Chris White and Stephanie were good choices for Ginsie to fill the seats she was left with last minute as Sheila and Jeff made other plans.

John Bugge and the "Bugge-ites" - were out and about but running their own shuttle. Dodd paddled C1 and was quick about it. Sam, Morgan and Virginia paddled the Belizian Bugge boat - as they're headed south in March. Wade and Molly paddled tandem and Wade was in an unusually talkative mood and Molly was putting up with him nicely! Justin and Mike Dey were out in solo boats, braving the conditions, new to paddling and this being their longest solo effort. Good job guys! John Baltzell did the usual and set the bar - arriving 30 minutes before anybody else to Hochheim and scouted out the take out situation and rallied thru portaging quite a few boats he didn't have the privilege to paddle. That is quite a take-out situation - you won't get out on the river left or right easily and without a lot of straight up the incline climb, slide, mud wrestle, and fence busting. Construction one day will conclude and until then, there's a take out on river right opposite the old bridge that allows a short drag across a field with an easily dealt with barbed wire fence. I highly recommend it...or continue on to Cheapside!

Town Lake Series 1 Chris Stevenson

John Baltzell’s Town Lake Series Races got off to a roaring start in 2012 with 44 boats and 52 entrants! Texas Winter 100k Chris Stevenson

This was the second year of West Hansen’s TWO from Austin to Bastrop and by all accounts it was an unqualified success. This section of the Colorado is quite pretty and interesting. Before this year, I had never paddled this stretch of river. I had assumed that the river in east Austin would be a cesspool, but it was anything but. In normal flow conditions, the water is clear and the bottom is rocky or sandy in most places. Depending on the water level, there are numerous gravel bars and islands with a choice of channels to keep things interesting. This time of year there are also duck hunters on the river – I think I counted 4 or 5 separate groups of hunters during the race. This year we had a significant rain three days before the race. The Austin gauge shot up over 11,000 cfs; the Bastrop gauge got over 26,000 cfs! By race

day, though, the water level was back down – 80-90 cfs at Austin and around 800 cfs at Bastrop when the finishers started coming in. Temps on race day started in the high 30’s but reached into the upper 50’s by late afternoon. There was a fairly stiff north wind at times. I would guess we saw gusts of 20-25 knots, or maybe it just felt that strong. There were several long straightaways into the wind with rolling whitecaps that were a real bear. 32 boats finished the race out of 43 entrants. There were 7 DNF’s. In the competitor class, Tommy Yonley was his usual speedy self in his Huki S1X surfski, winning the solo men’s division with a time of 8:14:14. That’s an average speed above 7.1 mph. Andrew Condie and Morgan Kohut, part of the well-populated mixed division, had the second fastest overall

Page 8: February 2012 Edition - TCKRAtckra.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/February_2012... · 2016. 2. 1. · Message from the President Jay Daniel Thanks to everyone who voted for the 2012

time, finishing just 10 seconds behind Tommy in a Spencer Patriot. Tommy reports that he rode Andrew and Morgan’s wake a good part of the race and was able to outsprint them at the end. Shawn Boyett and Sam Binion had the third-fastest overall time in 9:38 and took second mixed. Geoff Waters was 2nd solo male and fourth overall in 9:45. Geoff can really move that sea kayak! Chris White edged Tim Anglin by 6 minutes in the C-1 class. Ian Rolls, with the 9th fastest overall split at 10:24, won the solo male adventure class. Ian was second Novice in the 2011 Safari and turned in an impressive split in the December Solo race in a Spirit PRS, so he’ll be one to watch. Ken Startz and his partner, Dave Smith, took first male tandem in 10:50 in an experimental hull design that Ken reports will not go into production anytime soon. On the women’s side, Nancy Bowers took first female solo in the competitor class in 11:47. Ginsie Stauss took first solo female adventure class in 11:23. Full results of the TX Winter 100 can be viewed here: http://www.texaswinter100k.com/results%20by%20competitor_categories.html There was an interesting race in the mixed division as Michael Vandeveer arranged for six mixed teams from among the entrants. Andrew and Morgan were the class of the group and Shawn and Sam outdistanced the

rest of the field for second. The four other boats were all together fighting for third place with less than an hour left in the race. Vandeveer and Debbie Richardson had rudder trouble early and paddled the final ¾ of the course with just the rudder housing to steer. Mike Drost and Janie Glos led the group of four most of the race with Tim Curry and Sheila Reiter and Virginia and me reeling them in occasionally. Michael and Debbie put out a major effort to catch the other three boats with about 7 miles to go. Everyone got on the doubles and the race was on. Mike and Janie and Virginia and I dumped at the Rock Garden and took ourselves out of contention. From there, Tim and Sheila drafted Michael and Debbie until the boats got tangled up and Tim and Sheila were able to take the lead for good and win third. The conditions were pretty tough with low temperatures, high winds and shallow water in the first half of the course. It was difficult to find deep water because the water was still murky from runoff. Many thanks to West and his family for organizing and putting on such a great race. Special thanks to all of the volunteers and supporters, without whom events like this would not happen.

TWO Mixed Teams, L-R: Virginia Parker, Sheila Reiter, Tim Curry, Chris Stevenson, Morgan Kohut, Andrew Condie, Janie Glos, Mike Drost, Debbie Richardson, Michael Vandeveer, Sam Binion and Shawn Boyett.

Palmetto Hotline River Guru

The TCKRA has finally figured out that if you ask people to join up, then they just might do so. It never hurts to ask and with all the great benefits like the Hotline and whatever else is done by the organization, why wouldn't everyone join up? With all the new blood as directors, the River Guru has been impressed with Mildred's membership drive and Rendon's improvements on the website. And Chrisvenson is the first editor to put out a newsletter on-time in the last 12 years (kudos to both Chris and Jerry Brown). That being said, the by-laws need to be amended so that no lawyer is ever allowed to be the Newsletter editor again: who in their right mind would sign and notarize the waiver of subrogation just to let him insert an article in the newsletter? And agree to write for free?? Sorry Chris, the RG don't play those games; my salary demands have just been tripled. Being as this is the 50th year of the TWS and, just as importantly, the 25th year of the Palmetto Hotline, the RG is giving you some blasts from the past: a compilation of the Hotlines of yesteryear. There's probably only a handful of paddlers still around and kicking who know that the Hotline was first published in 1987, the brainchild of none other than the pompous river know-it-all, John Bugge. Yes, you read that correctly. Although John may seem by all outward appearances not to know a dangling participle from a bull scrotum, he was the literary brains behind the creation of the original Hotline. The attached issue of the Palmetto Hotline from March 1988 will explain a lot about Bugge; he misspells "congratulations" twice (two different ways). Let's be nice and say Bugge thinks outside the box. This Hotline is like a fine wine, it has only improved with age mainly because it couldn't get any worse.

In 1989 Uncle Russ teamed up with Bugge to paddle the safari and after one of their training runs, he saw a draft of the Hotline on Bugge's desk. His critique of the bastardization of the King's English earned him a quick retort, "If you think you can do better, then go ahead!" Of course, the quote is cleaned up a little as this is a family newsletter. From '89 til '94 Uncle Russ gave us a darn good product that had all TCRA members anxiously awaiting the arrival of the postman. In the old days, the newsletter was not openly available; you had to be a TCRA member to get it, or at least your paddling partner had to be a member so you could nick his copy. This is one of Uncle Russ's first Hotlines from March of '89.

After winning his Pulitzer Prize for Best Coverage of Texas Canoe Racing, Uncle Russ tired of the Hotline grind in '94. The void was felt in the community for several years until author of the most definitive book (and least seen book) on the Safari, West Hansen, picked up the mantel in '97. It's a tough act to follow one of greats like Uncle Russ and West did yeoman's work, even if it was a little difficult (ie. practically impossible) for him to write about teams other than his own; it's the ego thing you know. The attached Hotline from August '98 was his last and probably his best.

In 1999, the River Guru was passed the torch and he has both entertained and enraged (mostly enraged) almost every paddler in the Safari for the past 13 years. Attached is the Hotline from the post-safari doldrums in Aug '02. The race that year featured the Legend of Nekkid Man as well as lots of tomfoolery from many different boats.

About the TCKRA

The Texas Canoe and Kayak Racing Association is a statewide club for persons interested in paddle sport racing. The primary focus of the club is USCA and ICF class marathon racing, but other disciplines of paddle sports are promoted through TCKRA’s Race Calendar and Points Program.* In 1971 a group of canoe paddlers with an interest in canoe and kayak racing joined together and formed the TCRA (which later evolved into the TCKRA). During the past years the organization has grown to one of the largest canoe and kayak clubs in the state. The club is now recognized as the voice for canoe racing in Texas and its members have gained national recognition. Each year the TCKRA participates in approximately 20 canoe races and the TCKRA also organizes and sponsors the Texas State Canoe and Kayak Racing Championship Series. These championship level race events compliment the other annual racing events by recognizing the top competitors in a variety of paddle sport disciplines and classes. Additionally, the TCKRA culminates the season by awarding the top overall paddlers of the year. This recognition is determined through the accumulation of TCKRA Points.* Whether you are a novice paddler, intermediate or seasoned racer, TCKRA is a great way to meet new people, improve your skills and get out on the river. Our membership spans the state and varies widely by age, gender, skill-level and boat type; even our working careers and professions. We also share a great deal in common - the competitive spirit and an enduring love of the water. Your annual dues help fund events and activities throughout the year and around the state. By joining the TCKRA you enjoy the following benefits:

• 4 championship races, (Unlimited, Aluminum, USCA and ICF)

• The Martindale Triathlon

• Race discounts for TCKRA members

• Spring and fall river cleanups

• Bi-Monthly newsletter

• Texas paddler directory

• Annual banquet

• Paddling clinics – free to TCKRA members

• 2 TCKRA decals for every member

• Paddler of the Year points competition*

• A TCKRA membership will give you a voice in the racing community and allow us to continue to promote canoe and kayak racing in Texas.

Our members paddle kayaks and canoes crafted from wood, plastic, aluminum, carbon and Kevlar.

*The points program for 2012 has been suspended by the TCKRA Board, pending review of the points system.
