Ether Changes its name

I know, I know.

It was only a couple of weeks ago when I was announcing a new name of our group,

commenting about how often the name has changed, and apologizing. But, since then I not

only discovered that there was another name which would be even better, but also that I didnt

like Ether as much as I thought I would.

When Ive been picking names, Ive always envisioned someway of capturing that whole

idea that were working in the clouds, because when people talk about saving or sharing

information on the Internet, they often refer to it as being on a cloud. When you get right down

to it, a lot of our work will be done on the Cloud, so this fits.

Well, I thought that ether would work because it referred to that stuff that clouds are made up

of. Or, if you are talking about stored data it could be the stuff in between all of those images

and documents. After I thought about it some more, I decided that I really didnt want our project

to be thought of as just stuff.

The word hover, however, means to float, fly, or drift. The first thing which brought theword hover into my mind, strangely enough, was a clip from Back to the Future, Part II

showing Marty escaping Biff on a hover board. Thats what got me thinking . . . Hoverboard? I

began to look into the word hover, and while I didnt find that there were any companies with

that name (always my first step when Ive picked a name for our project, and luckily most of

my name choices hadnt been taken) I did find that there our culture makes a lot of references

to the act of hovering. In addition to the fictional hoverboard from BTTF, there are hovercrafts,

and then the whole idea of things that hover: cars, shoes, planes. When I thought of hovering, I

thought of UFOs which hover when they stationary, but can also fly. In science-fiction, there are

a lot of other examples of something that hovers. Cloud City, from Star Wars, seems to hover

in place inside a planets atmosphere. In real life, hot air balloons and blimps could be said

to hover when they are not moving.

Think of the advantage one has when they are able to hover. If you go high enough (such as

in a blimp), you are able to see above the trees and get a big picture perspective. Technology

that allows your vehicle to hover makes it possible for you to travel to places that may not be

Community Site launches for Hover Project

After trying many different approaches (Teambox, Facebook, etc.), Ive finally decided to go

with Groupsite as a home for the Hover Project. I chose Groupsite because it offers the same

functionality that you would expect from many different sites, and blends them together into one

place. Plus, Groupsite offers a free account.

To be honest, I probably would have gone with a Ning site from the very beginning, but ever

since they dropped their freemium model this just hasnt been an option for me.

Groupsite offers tools with more of a project or business perspective, so I think that it will work

out quite well. Ive been able to set up the following inside the Hover groupsite:

Forum for discussing different issues related to a wide range of starter topics

RSS feeds which appear on the homepage allows Hover members to very quickly

review our different streams of content being developed

Subgroups dedicated to each of our three community-centric Facebook fan pages A group blog which we can use for internal communication

The ability to send mail blasts, making it easier to communicate via email

Everything is under one menu, so it will make collaboration much easier

Hierarchy for users, roles, and access levels

Represents Hover better, so it is a great recruitment tool

Lets talkabout the Hover Process

With so many web tools out there to keep track of as we work on pieces for the Hover Project,

its going to be really important to understand how all of this technology is going to work

together. Dont worry, though, because I have a plan.

The Hover groupsite is going to be our hub for communication, information, and discussion.

Anything that you want to know will be found there, or at the very least you can always ask me a

question. Were going to be using Google Docs and the Posterous blog for our actual work. The

rest of the web tools--including Facebook--will be used for distributing our written work after it

has been refined.

Start from the beginning

Lets say that I have an idea for an article. As a member of the Hover team, my first step couldbe to visit the discussion forums and post a description of my idea. It might go something like

this:

Hey guys, Valentines Day is coming up, so I think it would be really great if there was a

Hovernote which talked about some great things to do as a part of a date on Valentines

Day.

So, this post is responded to and proves to be pretty popular with the group. I sit down to write

the piece, but find that I have questions. I would post those questions in the forums. Finally, Im

done with the piece.

My next step is requesting help with editing the piece. By now, I have two ways of doing this. Ieither have my own blog through Posterous, or I am a member of the Hoverboard blog. I would

enter the piece into one of those blogs, and then post a request in the Forums for someone to

edit my work.

After it is edited, I would make changes and then move the blog post into the Hoverboard (if I

didnt post it there originally). Another step will be to enter the text into a template on Google

Docs and then share it with an editor.

A Hover editor would then finalize the written work and then post it onto different document

sharing sites as a PDF or flashpaper. Once this is done, I would next distribute the blog post

across different networks (like Twitter).

Now, Im finished.

But then my article is chosen to be included in a best of type hoverzine at the end of the

A Note about Document Hosting

The Hover Project wouldnt be nearly as effective if it wasnt for the gobs of document hosting

sites that are currently available on the web. In fact, Hover is very dependent on sites like Scribd

because they allow us to distribute our content in formats that are easy to read on the screen,

share, and download in different formats.

Introducing the new Forums

In the future, I will be using this space to summarize any recent activities in the Forums, but for

this issue of the Hover News I will be talking a little bit more about the Forums structure and

how to use them.

Glossary

The process behind the Hover project is filled with a lot of new terms and concepts, so I wanted

to summarize them here as a part of a glossary.

Hovernote - A hovernote is a self-contained piece of writing which is normally focused around

one topic. A Hovernote can range in length from one page to twenty pages, although given its

different formats it may not always be easy to judge in this way. This type of publication could

be compared to the Press Release or the manifestos published by changthis.org.

Hoverzine - A hoverzine is a collection of articles (perhaps they were once hovernotes),

images, links, and other forms of media. Think magazine, or encyclopedia.

Fan Page/Community Page - These are those pages on Facebook which are centered around

an interest, company, celebrity, etc. I tend to use the phrase fan page and community page

interchangeably, because they have both been a part of the Facebook lexicon for so long.

(Facebook now refers to these pages as pages or community pages, but they were once fan

pages)

Community Fan Pages - These are the fan pages operated by Hover which focus on a specific

city. The three fan pages are Hartland Today, Shepherd Today, and Marlette Today. There are

other community pages on Facebook which may be managed by Hover in the future, but the

above three are the main ones.

Hoverboard - Aside from being a cool skateboard from Back to the Future, Part II, a

hoverboard is a blog that has been set up for the sole purpose of creating and cultivating writtenpieces. When something is posted to a hoverboard, it is still a work in progress or in draft status.
