WE WANT YOU!

Xmas is over – time to start thinking about cricket in Tides-

well? TCC has now started indoor nets at Buxton Community School,

on a Monday night at 20.00 hrs - £2 for Seniors, £1 for Juniors. All new and old members welcome. Age and ability need not be a problem.

At present we have a small squad of players from around the area and are actively looking to recruit new members.

At TCC we like to think we are a small friendly club who cater for all ages and abilities. Don’t worry if you’ve not played before or

not played for several seasons – and you’re never too old (just look at some of our present players…). Not to forget the Juniors, who are

the club’s future – they’re also all welcome. Qualified coaching and advice given.

During the season (May-September) we play a series of Sunday afternoon 40-over and midweek evening 20-over matches. Don’t worry

if you can’t attend every week – no-one has unlimited availability. As the club grows we hope to progress to league cricket.

If you are interested, come along to training, all equipment provided – that’s 8 p.m. at Buxton Community School Sports Hall – or

for further details, contact:

John Goddard 01298 26439

Bob Walkden 01298 871804 Mike Sayers 01298 871961

There is a diary for 2003 in the Library, with kind permission of the librarian, for you to book any events that you arrange dur-ing the year. In 2002 there were two Coffee Mornings arranged at the same time and on the same day. Unfortunately neither organisa-tion benefited under these cir-cumstances. After the success of professional theatre in Tideswell last autumn, New Perspectives make a wel-come return to the village with In the Bleak Midwinter on Friday 14th February at 7.30 pm. This seasonal and very funny comedy, based on the Second Shepherds Play comes well recom-mended: it was recently reviewed in the Guardian. New Perspectives brought Thank God For Cod to Tideswell in November and it sold out so make sure of your tickets now ! One night only. Tideswell Community Players' Who Saw Him Die rounded off the 2002 productions in Decem-ber. The next TCP play is in April and is to be Not With a Bang by Mike Harding (9-12 April). Those of you who came to the recent read through at the George will know that it is a com-edy which will have the audience rolling in the aisles. If you've never seen anyone doing this be-fore, make sure of your seat ! With more plays coming up during 2003 and a pantomime likely in 2004 it has never been a better time for theatre in Tideswell. Tides well Bowling Club Sorry about the omission of December’s report but I was delayed in Jordan. Our indoor season is almost at the half way stage and our achievements in the competit ive ‘friendly’ matches continues in the usual way (whatever that is). It has been rather quiet though. Perhaps it’s because Sylvia and Neville are in Australia for a few weeks visiting relatives and friends, especially her great grandson Nathan (remember him?) I have to say that our cricket team’s demise in ‘OZ’ is probably all their fault. We had a most enjoyable Christmas party at the Waterloo when the season’s trophies were presented to the successful mem-bers. A new presentation trophy had been created by the committee for the Best Young Bowling Club Member of the year. This was awarded to Andrew ‘WAZUK’ Turner for his general contribution to our bowling club. He is a cheerful enthusiastic young man who is always willing to help. (it’s just a shame about his hair cut). Well done Andrew! Our club singles championship took place during November (arranged whilst I was on holiday to give someone else a chance) and a very enjoyable evening was held by all. The semi-finalists were Harry Clough, Tony Hill, Horace ‘Tiger’ Wilshaw and Terry Yates. After much quality bowling in two very entertain ing matches it was left to Terry and Tony to compete in the grand final. Again a very close and skilfu l encounter with Terry eventually emerging as champion, (although he had to have a few extra puffs on his inhaler before the final end.) Well done and congratulations to Tony and Terry. Pen Portrait – Reg ‘Roundarm’ Bingham Reg is the Honorary President of our bowling club and was the first person to ‘cast’ a wood on our new green when it opened. After a most reward ing and eventful life the Presidency is a great joy to him. I had a lovely t ime ‘interviewing’ Reg. What a man. Reg is an almost unbelievable 96 years old and as he puts it with that mischievous twinkle in his eye is “fine apart from my eyes, ears, angina and legs.” He has been a church choir member fo r an amazing 87 and a half years and a churchwarden for 40 years. Reg has two daughters; Dorothy who lives in Buxton and Maureen who lives in Bristol. He has four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. His greatest sporting love is cricket, having been secretary for 50 years taking over from h is uncle ‘Stant Sellars’ after the First World War. As Trevor Hall in a recent tribute to Reg wrote in a recent Village Vo ice. ‘Reg did every-thing. Secretary, Groundsman and Bowler, with a unique bowling style.’ Hence his nickname ‘Roundarm’. As Trevor said to me “Batsman didn’t know where t’ball were coming from.” Reg shared some of his many happy memories with me but he particularly remembers a trick played on him by George Harri-son who climbed onto the roof and covered the chimney pot with a grass sod. Reg hasn’t smoked since. It is obvious that I have written about a real character and a very special man. Tideswell owes him much. Trevor called him ‘Mr Tideswell’ how about Lord Reg Tideswell? See you at the bowling green in spring Reg! David Dyson, Publicity Officer

Discovering Villages An Open Invitation Much has been “discovered” already and we are now at the “Putting-the-Flesh-on-the-bones stage.” The introduc-

tory parts of the final report are being written and we have identified over 20 priority areas which need devel-

oping. To do this we’re holding an open evening at 7 pm on Thursday 30th January at the Wesley Hall. Many people have expressed an interest in helping us and you’ll soon be contacted as will the many

groups and organisations that have contributed so far. We’re not asking you to build a swimming pool or install

a Zebra crossing at this stage (!) but we need locations and possible funding sources looked at etc. All are

welcome at this meeting ... In fact the more the merrier.

So what’s a priority? The following is a selection of them and put in no particular order.

Bike Paths and Parks

Indoor Gym and Swimming Pool

Job Club

Local Nature Reserves and Ponds

Better Public transport

Affordable Housing

Nursing Home

Litter Removal

Nursery.

As you can see, plans are large and small, easy(ish) to achieve and more difficult. At this stage, all we need is

for these ideas to be fleshed out for inclusion in the final document. Once that’s finished we can start to imple-

ment the ideas ... And that’s when the excitement starts.

Don’t forget 30th January at the Wesley Hall ... 7 pm. David Griffi th can be contacted on 872436 and Jen Bower on 871139. Go on give them a call.

Norman Gratton of Tides well

I am working on research for a book based upon the lifetime of the late Norman Gratton, which is to be published by the Li-braries & Heritage Department of the County Council. Older Tideswellians will be aware that Norman was born in Tideswell in 1889, and started work at Litton Mill half-time at the age of thirteen. Self-educated and interested in improving the lives of working people, he eventually became Chairman of the County Council and the Peak Park Planning Board. He received Honorary MSc. and M.A. degrees for his work for the Peak District National Park and the Workers Educational Association, and a C.B.E. for public service in Derbyshire, but remained essentially a “Tideswell Man”, liv ing all his life in a very s mall cottage in Tideswell. The book will be based upon a dissertation for a Master of Philosophy degree, which I completed at Sheffield University in 1991. It is intended to further the interests of Derbyshire local history, and not for commercial purposes. It will contain a detailed study of Tideswell after 1881, including the Census Return, local commerce and industry, Churches and education, Litton Mill, the Parish Council, Co-operative Society, and the Workers’ Educational Association, and the for-mer Bakewell District Council, within the wider Derbyshire context. It will also contain the history of the County Council (Norman was a Member, Alderman and Chairman between 1938 and 1974) and the formation and history of the Peak Park Planning Board (he was a member from 1952-1982 and Chairman 1957-77), within the context of national events and legislation. It will (hopefully ) be written in an interesting rather than academic style, and I should be most grateful if anyone would like to contribute information, anecdotes or photographs, as I would like to think of it as a Tideswell project. (I shall not be paid –my share of the proceeds will be twelve copies of the book). I attach a copy of a letter (on page 8) from Robert Gent, Assistant Director of Libraries & Heritage, containing assurance about the care of photographs, and equal care would be taken with any original documents which might be availab le. I would appre-ciate any help, wh ich anyone may be able to offer. Muriel Wilshaw (Tel: 01298 871474)

TIDESWELL LOCAL HISTORY CLUB

January 9th we were treated to a slide show of exceptional beauty. The shadows on rocks were darker, the heather purple was brighter, mists were beginning to role back down Bretton Clough. Karen Frenkel will rise at 5 a.m. to capture the clear morning light. She will wait hours for the sun, and return daily, weekly even monthly until conditions are as she wishes. Last Thursday we were re-warded by the results of her dedication. The next t reat will be on Thursday 13th February at 8 p.m. in the Institute when Linda Cluckie will talk on the History of Embro idery. On Thursday 12 December about 35 members gathered to enjoy a pre-Christmas bash. Ralph Lord made the evening more memorab le by giving a scholarly, yet witty talk on local life. Including transport before the I C engine, on steep hills in part icular, also a word about ancient boundary markers and old maps. Thank you Ralph, it was a great talk and made the evening. The food, drink and chat wasn’t bad either !!!

Dear Muriel, Norman Gratton of Tides well Thank you for taking the time to come and talk to us about the proposed book on Tideswell in the time of Norman Gratton. Both Ruth and I believe that this will be a valuable addit ion to our collection, and that it will have an audience. The purpose of this letter is to confirm the agreement we reached last week. In order to fit in with our existing publishing commitments, and for you to be able to carry out the necessary editing and re-writing, we would plan to publish the book in May 2004. Th is will a lso allow us some time to come up with a catchy title! The total length of the text will be 40-45,000 words and the production will be in a form similar to the Landscape History of Hartington volume. You will receive twelve copies free of charge and will be able to purchase further copies at the standard trade discount. I hope this is acceptable. It will be important to make good use of photographs, all of which will be fully acknowledged. We will be happy to com-mission a photographer to take some up to date photographs if necessary, but I would be grateful if you would speak to your Tides well contacts to ascertain whether they would be prepared to loan copies of photographs they own. This would be on the understanding that the publication is in the interests of furthering Derbyshire local history and is not for com-mercial purposes. We would be happy to offer the following assurances to the owners of the images: ⇒ we will borrow images for the shortest time possible and arrange their return by recorded delivery; ⇒ the source of all images will be acknowledged in the publication; ⇒ We will scan the images and return the originals to the donors, together with a copy on disk; ⇒ we understand not to use images for any other purpose, or to add copies to library collections wi thout express per-

mission from the donors. I hope that this is helpful. Thank you again for an excellent idea. Yours sincerely Robert Gent Assistant Director, Libraries & Heritage *Please contact Muriel Wilshaw (see page 6) if you have any photographs, etc.*
