Dear Parishioners,
As of this writing, everyone is still in shock regarding the helicopter crash of Kobe Bryant, the Lakers basketball legend. I am so sad. Why did he have to go so young? We mourn the loss of Kobe and his daughter and the others in the crash. We continue to pray for the family members who survive them. As I mentioned in my homily last Sunday night, Kobe was a practicing Catholic. He took the time to make it to Sunday Mass. He was a believer and a family man, too. His wife used to teach Religious Education. We miss you, Kobe!!
Kudos to our Santo Niño folks who help put on a great celebration at the 11 AM Mass last Sunday along with a reception at the Courtyard of Charity. Daghang Salamat!!
The archdiocese has notified me that we are expecting a priest to help us out beginning February 8th here at Holy Family. His name is Father Raja Yeruva, and he comes from India. In recent years, he has been serving in the Diocese of Gallup, NM. He will be with us until June 30th. On July 1st, we anticipate getting another priest to replace him. We are grateful for his presence, and we look forward to meeting him soon! Please see page 5 for a photo and bio of Father Raja. Since Father Raja is arriving February 8th, we will resume our weekday Mass schedule on February 10th. So, we will be back to daily Masses M-F, 6:30 AM, 8:00 AM and 5:30 PM every day. Thank you for your patience with our recent clergy shortage here at Holy Family. I appreciate your flexibility and understanding!! Confessions will continue to take place on Mondays (4:30 – 5:15 PM) and Saturdays (4:00 – 5:00 PM).
The Roaring 20’s themed big Winter Dinner Dance is almost here with a buffet style dinner! Roaring 20s is the theme. It takes place February 8 at 6:30 pm in the Grade School Auditorium! We have a fantastic DJ. 1920's attire is the way to go. Buy your raffle tickets after Mass or at the office. Dance and raffle tickets are on sale at the parish office!
Next Sunday night, we have our Sponsor/Candidate night with the Confirmation program. We begin with Mass at 5:30, followed by the Confirmation night at the Grade School Auditorium, for all teens in the confirmation program along with their sponsors.

WELCOME FATHER RAJA I am coming from the Diocese of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh state in India. I was born in Rentachintala on December 2, 1977. My parents are Lourdhu Marreddy and Sundhari. I have one sister Arunalatha. She and her husband have a beautiful daughter, Niketha. I was ordained by Bishop Emeritus Gali Bali on April 14, 2004. I have been a priest for 16 years. For 8 of these years, I worked in India in different parishes as Associate pastor. In 2012, I came to the USA at the invitation of Bishop James Wall to serve in the Diocese of Gallup, NM, at various parishes in New Mexico and Arizona. I am now coming to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for a different kind of experience. I am delighted to serve as your Associate pastor for the next 4 ½ months. I am grateful to all of you. Please keep me in your prayers and I will pray for you as well. Thank you and I look forward to meeting you soon. God bless you all.

En las lecturas de hoy nos encontramos deseando una relación más pro-funda con Jesús. Lo vamos conociendo un poco más al ver cómo le afecta la noticia del arresto de su primo Juan. Su primera reacción es retirarse, dejar Nazaret e irse a Cafar-naúm. Es allí donde quizás encuentra tanto consuelo como reto en las palabras de Isaías que Mateo cita: “El pueblo que caminaba en tinieblas vio una gran luz. Sobre los que vivían en tierra de sombras una luz resplandeció” (Mateo 4:16). Jesús contempla la muerte de su primo, y quizás su propia muerte, y busca la luz. Tal vez son estas palabras de Isaías las que sacan a Jesús de su retiro y lo lanzan a la acción, pues él comienza a predicar, enseñar, curar enfermedades y a proclamar el Evangelio del Reino.
