terrible pain in his leg. “I am afraid it’s just old age”, re-plied the doctor, “there is nothing we can do about it.”

“That can’t be” fumed the old man, “you don’t know what you are doing.”

“How can you possibly know I am wrong?” coun-tered the doctor.

Publisher's Corner by Sean AtheyWell, howdy ya'll!

Thanks for taking some time to read through this issue of Tidbits... as always, we appreciate it.

We hope you are making it through another upper plains winter, as we are. Sometimes it gets easy to just stay home when that wind is whip-

ping that snow around out there. Lynette and I recently braved the weather for something other than work. We headed up to Clinton, Minnesota to participate in the Clinton Commercial Club Chili Cookoff Fundraiser. Last year we went through and taste-tested, but this year we brought our (in)famous "Hillbilly Chili - Bits of This and Bits of That" to share. It is one of those recipes that never gets written down, but always turns out deli-cious. We had a couple people worried with our table banner that depicted a squirrel and possum... I think one gentleman swore it was a rat. Sorry, we don't live that far back in the woods... just beef and pork and some secret ingredients like fresh-canned vegetables and a bottle of Habanero Beer that we brew, among other types. This one is brewed with a variety of peppers and spices from our garden and puts a kick in the chili.

Q: I’m planning to hang some pictures around my new apartment, but a friend told me I need to be sure to locate the studs in the wall first. I know these are the vertical boards behind the wall, but I’m not sure how to find them. Do I need to buy some kind of special equipment? -- Jamie, via e-mail

A: You could buy an electronic stud finder at your nearest home-improvement store, but if you don’t want to shell out $20 or more for a one-time picture hanging project, you can learn to locate wall studs without help. And if you still can’t locate the studs, or just want the extra assurance, you can go ahead and buy a stud finder (preferably one that also has a built-in laser level, which is very convenient).

Studs are usually spaced about 16 inches apart. This varies, however. Above doors and windows, studs may be doubled or tripled up to support a heavier load. But along a wall, they’re pretty evenly spaced apart. That’s helpful to know once you’ve located a stud, because you have an idea how much space is open on either side.

Studs are always located in specific areas: in each corner of a room, on either side of the window frame, and on either side of the doorframe. They also are typically next to light switches and outlets (a couple inches to the left or right) because electricians often

No Stud Finder? No Problem

attach the fixture’s box to the side of a stud. I say “often” and “typically,” because every once in awhile an outlet is just set into the drywall.

You can combine a couple of low-tech methods to locate the rough position of wall studs. The first is to simply tap the wall and listen. First tap on the location of a known stud (the corner, for example). Then tap the wall a few inches to the right or left. You should hear a hollow sound away from the stud. The area of the wall that has a stud should sound solid.

The second method is to measure 16 inches from the known stud. Tap the wall at the end of the tape; if it sounds solid rather than hollow, you know you’re at another stud.

Because you’re hanging pictures, and I’m assum-ing relatively light ones, it’s more important for you to locate the spaces between the studs, rather than the precise width and location of each stud. (If you are hanging really large, heavy frames, the studs play a more important role.)

Once you’ve got a general location for the studs, you can measure and mark the spots where you want to hang pictures.

HOME TIP: Trying to arrange several pictures on a single wall? Trace the outline of each frame onto blank paper, cut them out, and arrange the outlines on the wall to figure out the layout ahead of time.

Send your home tips and questions to [email protected].

Q: I have a set of egg cups that are marked “Union Pacific.” A railroad buff has told me the pattern is Desert Flower. -- Steve, Riverside, California

A: Egg cups have become one of the most popular collect-ibles in recent years. Still being produced, they attract collec-tors on several levels. Prices can range from inexpensive to many thousands of dollars. Your Union Pacific set is probably worth about $90. Be aware that railroad china is being repro-duced, so when buying, do your homework and be cautious.

• • •Q: I have a set of five Stone Craft mixing bowls that original-

ly belonged to my mom. Are they worth keeping? -- Susan, Wheatridge, Colorado

A: Your mixing bowls, also called pink and blue because of their color, were made by McCoy and are very collect-ible. In fact, in recent years I have seen mixing bowls double and triple in price at most of the antique malls and shops I have visited. Your McCoy set was made during the 1970s and is val-ued at about $250, according to Mark Moran, author of “Warman’s McCoy Pottery” (Krause, $24.99)

figurines when he could find them. I have his collection, and even though I have no plans to sell them, I wonder if you can recommend a good price guide so I can have a better idea of current values. -- Alice, Casper, Wyoming

A: There are several excellent references available, but my favorite remains “M.I. Hummel: Figurines, Plates, Minia-tures & More” by Robert L. Miller and published by Portfolio Press.

• • •Q: I purchased a Gouda ashtray at a yard sale several weeks

ago. I paid $35 for it, and I wonder if it is worth more. -- Susan, Hammond, Louisiana

A: Gouda pottery was first produced in Holland during the 17th century. Two companies -- Zenith pottery and the Zuid-Hollandsche -- were instrumental in making the pieces collect-ible throughout the world. After checking online and in sev-eral of my reference books, I believe your ashtray is probably worth about $25.

Box Puppet “Play” Is Easy to Stage

Turn a dreary winter’s day into a “play day” filled with whimsical box puppets your family can make. Pick characters from a favorite book and retell a story “puppet show” style. Or mix and match characters from sev-eral books. You might even create some puppets that look like family members, for an even livelier troupe. Use extra props and make funny voic-es and sound effects for a memorable performance.

Before you begin making your pup-pets, collect a few empty food boxes, such as single-portion cereal boxes, which are quite easy for younger chil-dren to manipulate. As your cast of puppet characters grows, it’s definite-ly fun to use boxes in a range of shapes and sizes. Here’s what you’ll need:—1 single-portion cereal box, paper lining removed and open end glued shut. (For a larger puppet, use a standard-size cereal box.) —Poster paint and brushes—Markers—Construction paper—Glue and scissors—Odd and ends, such as felt, ping- pong balls, cotton`` balls and yarn for beards and hair. Here’s the fun:

With the front of the box facing you, draw a horizontal line around the mid-dle of the box. An adult should cut along the line on the front and two

narrow sides of the box. Do not cut the line on the back of the box. Instead, make a fold on that line so you can bend back the two connected halves of the box. Insert your fingers and thumb in the openings to test moving the “mouth” of the puppet.

Paint the outside of the box or cov-er it with construction paper. If you are making safari-style puppets, you might want to use adhesive-backed paper in tiger, lion or zebra prints.

Add craft supplies to represent the appearance of a book character or per-son in your family or neighborhood. Glue on ping-pong balls or plastic milk-jug lids for eyes. Make a dot in the center of each one with a marker. Add yarn or cotton balls for hair, and felt or craft foam for ears. Don’t forget to make a tongue and glue it inside where the box opens and closes. Draw teeth or lips on the outside of the box. Add other details to create a distinct personality.

Lynette and I did our best to dress the part, and we even had a small memorial to Donna Douglas (Ellie May Clampett) who passed away at the beginning of January.

We had a great time giving out chili samples and talking with some of our readers from the Clinton area. It was quite a family affair, to be honest. My dad grew up outside of Clinton and is one of thirteen brothers and sisters. So, out of eleven chili entrants, I believe five of us were related somehow. Now that just makes the competition that much better, although I think my cousin Greg blatantly brandishing a baby to try gain votes for his chili was over the line... he claimed it was his "granddaughter" or something... whatever.

I have to say, I did get to try all ten other chillies and they were all fantastic. There was everything from a chicken taco chili to a classic five alarm variety (that one slowed me down a bit, I think I did have to step outside to cool off and wipe the sweat from my forward at one point.)

Thanks to the Clinton Commercial Club for putting on the event, I think next year will be the fourth annual chili cookoff... and thanks to everyone who came out to taste the wonderful varieties of chili that night and help support one of our many small towns.

Have a great week and be safe out there!Sean Athey, owner/publisher

• If you store nail polish in the fridge, it will dry more quickly and last longer.

• “In cold winter months, keep your robe (and slippers or whatever else) under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. It’ll be toasty and will help make the transition into the cold a little less harsh.” -- G.G. in New York

• As tax time draws ever closer, try taping a large manila envelope to the fridge, leaving the top open. Immediately place all tax-related forms and receipts in the envelope as they come in. This way, when you are ready to start your taxes, all items will be together and easy to find.

• “To help moisten really dry feet, slather on lotion, wrap feet in plastic wrap, then slip on some socks overnight -- or for as long as you can stand it.” -- B.H. in Michigan

• “My no-iron tip: I toss the wrinkly garment into the dryer for about five to 10 minutes with a damp washcloth, and it steams most wrinkles out. It won’t look starched and pressed, but it’s good enough for casual wear or running-late mornings. I haven’t ironed in years.” -- E.W. in Florida

• Don’t forget to clean your washing machine ev-ery so often by running it on the highest-temperature cycle empty after adding a gallon of vinegar. This will clean out the hoses and get rid of stuck-on de-tergents.

• To remove soot from your carpet, sprinkle it with salt, let sit and then vacuum. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all traces.
