Preface  Dear Friends,

I want to share a part of my life journey with you.  Well my church life any way.  Many years ago, a  church warden  invited me  to become a  sidesperson, and  I promptly  said no! Well you do don’t you?  It went without saying that Tom, Dick or Harry could do it better, of course.  I thought little more about it, then I was asked again….and again.  Still saying no.

But God had other plans. I willingly agreed to serve on the Council, then I learnt that it meant taking a turn at being sidesperson as part of that responsibility.

But God wasn’t finished.

Seven  years  later  I  took  over  as  Secretary  to  the  PCC.  Became  a  member  of Archdeaconry synod, then Diocesan Synod, truthfully, I was “churched” out by the time we moved to France.

But God wasn’t finished.  Total change of scene.

We were able to worship just once a month, (in the town of Cognac).  It quickly became obvious that was not enough. This time I listened to God’s call.  Together with 5 others and  building  on  that  Cognac  congregation, with  the  support  of  ICS,  the  chaplaincy  of Poitou‐Charentes and the Vendée came into being.  In 1998 I was licensed as a pastoral assistant.

But God wasn’t finished.  You all know the rest of my story…..

Okay  so why  have  I  shared  this with  you?   Well,  in  the  hope  that  next  time  you  are invited to be a welcomer, or help make the coffee, or read a lesson, or lead prayers, or even lead worship, you will give serious consideration to the proposal.

God calls us all to serve him, in all kinds of ways.

Sunday services depend not on the priest, but on each and every one of us.

Just one example:  I imagine that nearly everyone enjoys the fellowship which happens after  the  service  over  the  coffee,  for  some  folk  it may  be  their  only  interaction with others  for  the whole week.   But  it  is only possible because  someone cares  enough  to make the coffee.

Each of us has a role to play.  Take the time to listen very carefully, you may hear God calling you to a particular ministry, for ministry it is.  Remember that whatever God calls us  to  do,  he  equips  us  for  that  role,  through  life  experience,  through  and  with  the support of others.

Please, please, give serious consideration to volunteering for one of the many roles that go toward our Sunday worship.   Talk with those who already undertake the  job, what seems  complicated  really  isn’t.   Without  a  large, willing  team  of  helpers,  our  Sunday worship may not happen, and All Saints, Vendée may easily cease to exist.

So  it’s over  to  you, next  time you are  invited  to do a  “job”  in Church, why not  say a resounding  AMEN?

Hazel

Please join us ... ...for Tea, Coffee & Biscuits after our services,

followed by a Bring & Share Lunch. Everyone is welcome to join us

- even if you have not brought anything, there is always enough to go round! Unfortunately, when there is a service on the fifth Sunday in the month, the hall is not always available

REVISIONOFTHEASVELECTORALROLL

The Electoral Roll is essentially a "register" of all eligible members of the congregations of a church who then have a right to attend the Annual Meeting, vote at this meeting for motions and elections, and stand for election to council or other offices. The number of people on the Electoral Roll also affects how many Council members can be elected at the Annual meeting. It  is the duty of the Electoral Roll Officer to compile and revise the  Roll  and  to  maintain  the  confidentiality  of  the  information  ‐  publishing  only  an "extract" when necessary.

There  is  a  strict  timetable  for  the annual  revision based upon  the date of  the Annual Meeting which this year will take place on March 24th 2018. I am therefore required to revise the Roll no earlier than the 24th February and no later than the 9th March. Once the revision has been made the Roll is "frozen" until after the Annual Meeting. If anyone wishes  to  be  added  (  or  removed)  from  the  ASV  Roll  please  contact  me  as  soon  as possible.  Application  Forms  for  enrolment  can  be  obtained  from  me  or  one  of  the Wardens.

YourChurchwardenPollyWardwritesfrom"TheEast":

Here we are looking at the beginning of February already and it doesn’t seem 5minutes since Christmas – but, I believe that we are looking at a year of great changes for All Saints Vendée and it is up to us to decide what will change and in what direction.

Firstly,  we  will  be  saying  goodbye  to  2  couples  who  have  played  a  large  part  in  our  recent development. By  the  time you  read  this Keith and Anthea will be at  their  last  service  in La Chapelle Achard and Suzanne and Simon will be following soon after them. We wish them all well in their new adventures

This means that we are now short of 1 warden and will soon be lacking a Treasurer. Please give some thought to this situation and whether you can help.

In  the East, our problems concern  ‘accommodation’. You may have heard  that  the church at Puy de Serre will be closing for a long time for repairs. It seems likely that this will be before the end of March. We are expecting  to hold our  services  in  the  salle which will mean  that we will  have  to put up  the tables and move all the chairs round after the service is finished. I hope you will all  lend a hand with this extra work.

I am sure that we will all soon get used to the new arrangements and help in every way you can. I look forward to these changes – life is never about standing still, isn’t that what we have found?                                                                                                                                                                     Polly Ward

Your Assistant Churchwarden TonieChandlerwritesfrom"TheWest":

Dear Friends

Happy New Year to you all. I hope you have been able to celebrate the start of 2018 without catching the flu bug which is going around.

The start of the year is not a particularly good one for ASV, especially here in the West. During our  service at Chapelle Achard  this Sunday  (21st  January) we will be  saying  farewell  to Keith and Anthea, as they move back to the UK. During the past few years, Keith, supported by Anthea, has worked  very  hard  to  support  All  Saints  Vendee.  He  has  been  Church Warden,  Communications Officer,  Worship  Leader,  and  computer  operator,  as  well  as  contributing  to  many  other  activities, especially in our Home Church group. We will miss them both very much, and wish them well in their new adventures in England. Thank you Keith for all you have done for us.

Jo, sadly, has had to resign from all her roles due to health problems. Jo, thank you so much for all you have done over the years – Church Warden, Worship Leader, organiser, and many other innumerable roles, too many to count. We pray for God to restore  you back to health as quickly as possible, and hope that you and Brian will continue to join us for services and social events whenever you are able. We will also shortly be losing Suzanne and Simon as they move to Finistère in March. This means that we will be looking for a new Treasurer, and again another Worship Leader to replace Suzanne, and a Musician to take over from Simon. How can we fill their places?

Our Home Church continues to thrive, even though we are losing some of our members. We have an informal service led by one of the group, followed by an enjoyable shared lunch.  On Friday 2nd March, we will be holding the World Day of Prayer service at the home of Chris & Tonie Chandler at 11 am. Everyone is welcome to come and join us.  (There will be some cakes made to the Suriname recipe!!)                 Tonie Chandler (Assistant Church Warden)

Hazel  opened  the  meeting  with  prayers  and  the  minutes  of  the  previous  meeting  were accepted and signed by Barbara.   In Matters arising  it was decided the profits  from the Marché de Noel would go to All Saints Vendée. It was pointed out that we had donated €5000 to Charities in 2017 and there was to be an increase in the Common Fund which we would have to find.   Mike Mylod asked to be included as a Worship Leader again.   There  were  only  two  replies  to  the  request  for  help  for  the  Vicarage  and  its  garden,  very disappointing.    The Marché de Noel raised €2343 (pre costs), well done everyone.    Safeguarding, Anne asked that, regardless of previous history and jobs, anyone involved with ASV in dealing with our parishioners should complete the forms and follow the training where appropriate.   Tonie will stand in for Keith, when he leaves, as Church Warden in the West. Keith was thanked for all he has done in his time with All Saints.   There is no progress in the search for a new Priest.   Further discussion on where we meet when Puy de Serre is closed for repairs will take place.   Social. There will be a Quiz on 1st Dec.   The date for the AGM is set as 24th March 2018, at 2pm in the usual room in Les Essarts.   Hazel will collect various registers and AGM information when she is in UK.   The next meeting would be 18th Jan 2018.   Meeting closed at 1250h with The Grace

Choice

Do we have a choice ?  Are we free to choose ?

Intuitively,  it  feels as  if we can choose, decide  for ourselves whether  to do one thing or another or simply sit on the fence and do nothing.

On  the other hand,  is what we do determined by who we are, by how we were brought up and by our prejudices ?

Then  again,  what  about  addiction;  those  who  have  to  smoke;  those  who have to drink;  those who have to gamble ?   Nicotine, alcohol and all  those drugs I’ve never tried, even when I was at university at the end of the Sixties, can compel us to have a drag or a glass or a quick fix.  And what about those who have to place a bet ?  I bet I must have done sometime long ago ! (Lotto ergo sum)

I  don’t  think  you  can make anyone  love you however much you might  like them but  is  the one we  love, our soul mate, predetermined by our gender, our upbringing and the way we see the one we love ?

And if salvation is open to all, surely there is the possibility of saying yes or no to God.  Personally,  I don’t buy into predestination, that there are those among  us who  are  bound  to  be  saved whereas  there  are  those  among  us who  are  beyond  the  spiritual  pale  and  will  never  be  let  in  to  paradise whatever they think or do.

Personally, I do like the idea that we all have a destiny but, to my mind, we are free to buy into it or reject it.

So what do you think ?  And are you free to let Jacqui know or not ?

Gareth Randall,

Priest-in-charge,

St Bartholomew’s Dinard

Outside the Book “In the beginning was the Word,

And the Word was with God, And the Word was God…”

Familiar words at Christmas time, but it’s an intriguing passage. In my copy, the opening of John’s Gospel is sub-headed:

“The Prologue: The Eternal Word.” The pedant in me wants to ask: “If the Word is eternal, how can it it have a beginning?” I’m no theologian, but I suspect the answer has to do with turning the eternal, the infinite into something our finite minds can grasp. It’s no surprise that, to this day, Jewish writers will talk about G-d, expressed in that mysterious way, not so much because it’s against the Torah to fully express the name of God but as a reminder of the impossibility of doing so. Stepping outside the book again, here are the opening words of the Tao Te Ching, an ancient Chinese book of wisdom:

The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao; The name that can be named is not the eternal name. The nameless is the beginning of heaven and earth.

The named is the mother of ten thousand things.

This is more than just interesting. Chinese translations of the Bible read: “In the beginning was the Tao…” “The Word…” in English translations is derived from the Greek word Logos. “Tao" is a term used for concepts central or fundamental to many Chinese and eastern philosophies, where it is comparable to some notions of Logos, the Monad, or God, in western philosophies.” I suppose it all comes back to this idea of trying to express the inexpressible, the value of silence. I’ll leave the last word with William Penn: “The humble, meek, merciful, just, pious and devout souls are everywhere of one religion… …the less form in religion the better, since God is a Spirit; for the more mental our worship, the more adequate to the nature of God; the more silent, the more suitable to the language of the spirit.”

Happy New Year to you all,

David.                                   David Pearson

I sent photos and details of the services which ASV held in Angles on Remembrance Day. I received this acknowledgment from The Commonwealth War Graves Commission.....

To: All Saints Vendée

Dear Mrs. Stainton‐James,

Thank you for your email which was forwarded to our office in Ieper, Belgium, as we are responsible  for  the care and maintenance of  the Commonwealth War Cemeteries and Memorials  in  the  Western  European  Area,  to  which  France  also  belongs.

We  highly  appreciate  your  endeavour  to  commemorate  our  fallen  heroes.  It  is  heart warming to know that these soldiers will never ever be forgotten.

Also,  your  kind  words  about  our  work  and  the  upkeep  of  our  sites  are  highly appreciated.  It  gives  an  immense  boost  to  the  Commission’s  staff  to  receive  such positive feedback and to hear that their work is valuable. We all take great pride in our work and it will be a further  encouragement to us to learn we are spoken so highly of. We  promise  you we  shall  do  our  utmost  best  to  perpetuate  the maintenance  of  the cemeteries and memorials.

We would like to thank you and we wish you all the best !

Kind regards,

Exhibition of Christmas Cribs at Faymoreau

After  the  rush  of  Christmas,  it  was  a  real treat  to  visit  the  Church  of  St.  Louis  in Faymoreau  where  we  discovered  an Exhibition of Cribs from Around the World.

We  didn't  know  what  to  expect  so  were delighted when we walked  into  the  church to  find  the  pews  on both  sides  of  the  aisle covered with cribs from around the world ‐

there was even a crib built inside an igloo!

Each  scene  had  been  lovingly  constructed  using  minute  traditional  construction  materials, bricks  and  tiles,  representing  villages  in  the  local  area;  there  was  even  a  model  train  set running round the coalmine buildings at Faymoreau.

Stuart  and  I  were  particularly fascinated  by  the  representation of  "our"  church  in  Puy  de  Serre and  so  asked  if  we  could  take photos. If you know Puy de Serre, you  will  recognise  the  interior photo  of  the  church  (with  a minute  crib  scene  set  in  front  of the  altar).  Bear  in  mind  that  the doorway  on  the  model  is  less

than 6 inches high so the detail is extraordinary and all to scale.

Whilst taking our photos, a gentleman approached us and admitted to being the designer and constructor of these models and scenes. We talked about our services at Puy de Serre and he was  delighted  to  tell  us  that  he  had  been  married  at  the  church  in  1968  and  would  be celebrating  50  years  of marriage  this  coming April,  so  the  little wedding  couple  outside  the doors of the model church were him and his wife!
