Dear Friends,
I think it was President Harry Truman who came up with the folksy saying, “If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.” He was, of course, referring to the pressures and stresses of his job. And while we will never experience the heat of the kitchen in terms of the presidency, in a very real sense, all of life is a kitchen and, sooner or later, we all feel the heat. We need to face that fact and prepare ourselves to deal with the stresses and strains of daily living. Why is it that some people can stand up to life and see it through while others are defeated by it and give up in despair?
In today’s Old Testament reading from Jeremiah 17:5-8, the prophet draws a contrast between two kinds of people. One he compares to a bush in the desert and the other to a tree that is planted beside the water. The implication is that both are subjected to the same conditions of weather and climate. The “bush” is the person who relies exclusively on human strength and ability. The “tree” is the person who puts their trust in the Lord. He was talking about people with two different kinds of faith, both of which are necessary. If you and I had no faith in ourselves or in our fellow human beings, then I seriously doubt that we can have any real faith in God either. Both are essential ingredients in a wholesome and stable life. But pity the person whose total trust is in human capabilities, who knows no other method than to tackle life with a vengeance. The day will no doubt come when that person will encounter something that their faith is inadequate to handle, be it an overwhelming sorrow or a deep and bitter disappointment.
The reality of such experiences urges upon us one question: Where is our faith? How deep are our roots? Do we have access to reserves of power that are greater than our own? The person with the strong faith in God has that kind of reserve: “He is like the tree planted beside the water that stretches out its roots to the stream. It fears not when the heat comes.” The person with strong religious faith knows that adversity is a part of life, but they are not afraid of it because they know they can handle it.
Let’s talk about our fears for a moment. What are we worried about today? Our job? Our health? Our kids? And if we press the issue far enough, isn’t it true that we are really worried about ourselves? We know that the test is coming in one form or another and we are not sure that we are adequate to meet it. This is where the saints of the ages have discovered the profound meaning of deep religious faith. In the words of the Psalmist: “God is our refuge and our strength, an ever present help in distress.”
The other thing that Jeremiah says of the tree is that even in years of drought it still bears fruit. People with great faith not only strengthen themselves, they also sustain those around them. There is nothing more vital to any nation or any community than people who are stable in times of instability, than people who have hope in days of despair.
I began today with the folksy advice of President Harry Truman, “If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.” Well, none of us can really do that. The stresses and strains are built in. But we can do something better. We can put our trust in the Lord and become like that tree “planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream.” That kind of faith can stand the test.
May God bless us and our families,
Fr. Mike

IMPORTANT MESSAGE
We wanted to let everyone know of a scam that is taking place. Many of our staff & volunteers have
received emails and/or text messages from someone claiming to be Fr. Mike. In this email, they make it
sound like Fr. Mike is asking for money and/or iTunes gift cards. Please know that no matter what the email
address looks like or how convincing the email sounds...this is not Fr. Mike or anyone else on staff.
If you ever receive anything like this and question it...please contact our Parish Office before purchasing anything. We care so much about our parishioners and
do not want to see anyone get caught up in this.
