We Gather to Worship CENTERING Rev. Sally Johnson
PRELUDE Adagio, BWV 564 J. S. Bach
CHORAL INTROIT Holy God
ENTRY INTO CELEBRATION Ginger Sisco
After he was baptized by John, Jesus went by himself to the wilderness where he was tempted.
For forty days in the desert, Jesus was tempted to become relevant, spectacular, and powerful.
Today, we begin to journey with Jesus through the season of Lent, which brings us to face some of our own weaknesses and temptations.
Let us worship God and walk the journey together, seeking the spirit as our guide and companion along the way.
+ PROCESSIONAL HYMN NO. 79 Holy God, We Praise Thy Name GROSSER GOTT
Together We Praise GodPRAYER OF CONFESSION
Open our eyes to see injustice in our world.Give us courage to resist the powers that oppress the poor.Open our ears to hear the cry of the needy.Teach us generosity for sharing the abundance of your creation.Open our minds to imagine an end to human strife.Grant us wisdom to pursue the ways of peace.Open our hearts to love our neighbors and our enemies near and far.Give us desire to embody the compassion of Christ. For the sake of the world, in the name of Christ we pray.Amen. + GOSPEL READING Luke 23:26, 33-34a
As they led him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and they laid the cross on him, and made him carry it behind Jesus. When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”
This is God’s Word for the people of God.We thank God for sacred Word.
