Men’s Ultimate The season is finally here! The Nomads participated in an a tournament at the beginning of the semester in Clemson, SC. We are now getting to the meat of our season with a three weekend stretch of tournaments. Starting this weekend with the prestigious Queen City Tune Up tournament in Charlotte, NC. This tournament is nationally known and will feature teams such as Ohio State, Penn State, NYU, Connecticut, and even Michigan (do I smell another upset?). We are all pumped up for this tournament! We have made a lot of progress and we do not want it to go to

waste. We are looking to play the role of spoiler and show a lot of teams that we are force to reckon with. Next weekend we have another tournament up at James Madison University. Then on the 25th and 26th of February we will be traveling to our favorite tournament of the year, the Chucktown Throwdown, in Charleston, SC. We can not wait to play and represent Appalachian State!

Snowboarding At the beginning of this season, Chad Strickland, the team’s president, was quoted in The Appalachian saying “this is our year.” So far, that statement seems to be proving itself true. Collecting numerous team and individual medals at every race thus far, the Snowboard team is loving every minute. This week we are gearing up for a weekend in Snowshoe, West Virginia, where we will be competing in two different race styles, giant slalom and snowboard cross. The following weekend we’ll be heading to Regionals at Wintergreen Resort in Virginia, and hopefully securing a bid to Nationals; which will be held in early March at Sunday River Resort in Maine.

Ice Hockey After falling to the College of Charleston and Johnson and Wales, the Mountaineers Ice Hockey team bounced back to defeat Wake Forest with a score of 6-5. The team was sparked by the play of senior Noel Herland, who recorded a hat trick** along with the game winning goal. The win was much needed as the team approaches the BRHC playoffs, which are held at the end of the month. The Appalachian State Ice Hockey team will take the ice again this weekend, traveling to Greensboro to take on Elon. With only 4 games remaining in the season, the Mountaineers look to finish strong and make their mark in the playoffs.

Women’s Rugby

The Women’s Rugby team has so much to be happy about! In our game against UNCG we were victorious, winning our game 75-5. We were also successful in our second Matrix game against Elon, where we won 43-3. If winning these matches are not enough to get our team excited, we are also holding a fundraiser Wednesday, February 8th that we hope will be a success. Our next matches will be at home against Wake Forest and UNC Charlotte. Come out February 18th to watch our match against Wake, and February 25th to watch us take on UNCC.

Club Sports teams and readers, I hope everyone had a great week of classes and an especially awesome week of practices. I can tell that all teams are working hard to make this an outstanding competition season. Many teams have already starting competing. With this being the case, I am looking forward to this semester and the outcome of these games. As always I want everyone to have a very successful season and to keep improving. These past few weeks I have been very busy, in and out of the Club Sports Office. One of the main things all the Executives have been doing is

researching Appalachian State University’s peer institutions. We are going in front of the Budgetary Committee to hopefully improve funding in Club Sports. With this research, we are looking into how much money other schools give to their Club Sports programs and if they have a fee in their student tuition specifically for their Club Sports. This research has made me realize how fortunate we are that Varsity Athletics works with our program to give us facility space. Some of these schools do not have weekly practice space, limiting their seasons but we get to practice and compete year round, even in

the crazy weather that Boone brings. Another event I have been working on is the yearly Symposium that the Executives put on for new officers as well as a (fingers crossed) kickball tournament for all Club Sports teams. Both these events will take place at the end of the semester and I am hoping that they will help new officers and teams get to know each other. Keep up the hard work and keep on competing!

Women’s Lacrosse The App State Women’s Lacrosse team has had a great start to the spring 2012 semester. With the addition of many new players, the team spent the last two weeks practicing hard and preparing for the season. The competition season kicks off this weekend on Saturday February 11th, at NC State University. NC State will be a great team to kick start the season because it is a league game and it will set the pace for the rest of the semester. The Women will face their hardest competition when they head to

Elon the weekend of February 18th. They will play all three of their conference teams, Elon, Radford, and UNC Chapel Hill, on the same day; determining who will make it to regionals. It is the weekend they are the most nervous and excited about. App State Lacrosse has the team, the determination, and skill level to beat these teams. It will all come down to who wants the win more.

Fencing The excitement of the new year continues for the ASU Fencing club as the first official tournament of the year begins to come around the corner. In preparation for the competition, the Fencing club is beginning to teach newer fencers about a new weapon that is utilized in a way that is very different from a standard fencing foil. This new weapon, the epee, is the heaviest of the three weapons utilized in fencing, and is actually the closest thing to a live action duel one can get to in the sport of fencing. The target area that is normally restricted to the torso or upper body when using the other two weapons. When fencing with an epee, one can be scored upon with a touch to any part of the body, ranging from one’s feet to the incredibly durable mask that covers the face. This new weapon, along with the different rules that come with it will certainly challenge the newer fencers. If the past couple of practices reflect on to our performance in competition, we are more than ready for our next tournament.

Men’s Rugby Last weekend AHO went down to Charlotte to play ECU in a non-conference match, hoping to provide the team with some experience and some field-time. Despite playing a bruising and physical game, AHO was unable to convert pressure into points, and lost the hard-fought match. AHO hopes to learn from the experience, and lift the level of competition in the coming weeks. AHO will begin their matrix season this Saturday, February 11th with a home game against UNC Charlotte. The game will be played at Kidd Brewer Stadium at 3:00pm, and we hope to see many fans and supporters out there.
