LENT & LENTEN REGULATIONS

Lent is a Liturgical Season filled with deep meaning and great richness for we whochoose to journey along with Christ on this holy path of spiritual renewal.

1. Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent.

2. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics whoare 18 years of age but not yet 59.

3. The special Paschal Fast and Abstinence are prescribed for GoodFriday and encouraged for Holy Saturday.

4. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meat-less meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to main-tain strength, may be taken according to each ones needs, but to-gether they should not equal another full meal. Eating betweenmeals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milkand fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would beseriously affected, the law does not oblige.

5. Lent is the Principal Season of Penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful arestrongly urged to develop and follow a program ofvoluntary self-denial(in addition to followingthe Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy. Bythe threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the Church keeps Lent from AshWednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should un-dertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe any penitential days at all ora substantial number of such days or the law of fast and abstinence must be considered serious.

In the Roman Catholic Church, Lent officially ends at sundown on the 28th of March, (HolyThursday), with the beginning of the Mass of the Lords Supper (the beginning of the

La Cuaresma una tiempo litrgico lleno del significado profundo y de la gran riquezapara los que elijan viajar junto con Cristo en este camino santo de la renovacin espiritual.

1. La Abstinencia de carne debe ser observada por todos los catlicos de 14 aos de edad el

Mircoles de Ceniza y todos los viernes de la Cuaresma.2. El Ayuno debe ser observado el Mircoles de Ceniza por todos los catlicos que tienen 18

aos de edad, pero no 59 an.

3. El Ayuno y Abstinencia especial Pascual se prescriben para el Viernes Santo y la anim parael Sbado Santo.

Lent is a forty-day period before Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday. In some ways Sun-days are different, because Sundays also commemorate the Resurrection, as well as prepare usfor the Sacraments of Initiation and Holy Week. Lent begins this year on the 13th of Februaryand ends on the 30th of March 2013, with the Easter Vigil.

The decorations and vestments are Violet (Rose on Laetare Sunday, the 4th Sunday ofLent and Red for the Passion).

Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and takingstock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter,when the faithful rededicated themselves in the faith and when catechumens were instructedin the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Chris-tian imitates Jesus withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days.

There are three basic parts of the Season of Lent.

The first two and a half weeks, starting with Ash Wednesday, the First and second Sundaysof Lent until just before the third Sunday of Lent, were traditionally called the time of theOrder of the Penitent. It was a tradition at the beginning of Lent to go to Confession in

order to be closer to our Lord as the Season of Lent progressed and to set a good example tothose preparing for the Easter Sacraments.

The second two weeks plus - focus on those in the Catechumenate and their preparation forBaptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist. This period of Lent is called the Order of theCatechumenate and includes the Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent, and the celebrationof the Scrutinys during Sunday Mass.

The last period of Lent begins technically on the Fifth Sunday of Lent (although the RCIA ritu-als take a stronger presence on this day) is called Passiontide and the focus of Lent now turnstoward a more intense remembering of finale leading up to the death of our Lord. Before therestoration of the Catechumenate with Vatican II, for many centuries the Fifth Sunday of Lent,the Passion of the Lord according to Matthew was read. These readings are now moved to Palm

Sunday, the season culminating just before the beginning of the Mass of the Lords Supper.

In Lent it is important to receive to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

La Cuaresma un perodo de cuarenta das antes de la Pascua. Comienza el Mircoles de Ceniza.Aun de cierto modo los domingos son diferentes cuando contamos los cuarenta das, porque los do-mingos conmemoran la Resurreccin. La cuaresma comienza este ao en el 13 de febrero y terminael 30 de Marzo de 2013, con la Vigilia Pascual.

En la mayora de las iglesias, las decoraciones son Violeta, (Rosa para el 4 domingo de la

Cuaresma Rojo-Pasin).

La Cuaresma es un tiempo de buscar el alma y el arrepentimiento. Es un tiempo para la re-flexin y para hacer un balance. La Cuaresma originada en los primeros das de la Iglesia era como untiempo preparatorio para Pascua, cuando los fieles se dedicaron otra vez a la fe y cuando los ca-tecmenos fueron instruidos en la fe y preparados para el bautismo. Observando los cuarenta dasde la Cuaresma, el Cristiano individualmente imita el retiro de Jess en el desierto por cuarenta das.

Hay tres partes bsicas del tiempo de la Cuaresma.

del fin que conduce a la muerte de Nuestro Seor. Antes de larestauracin del Catecumenado del Vaticano II, por muchos siglos elquinto domingo de Cuaresma, la Pasin del Seor segn San Mateoera leda. As we conclude our 2012 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal, I am verygrateful for your generosity. Our 2012 goal was $92,438 and we hadnet gifts of $86,405. The CCW will sponsor their Annual Spring Bazaar on Saturday, February 23rd from 10:00am 6:30pm and Sun-

day February 24th from 8:00am 1:30pm. The Bazaar will be held in Sebahar Hall and will have an extravaganza

of items for the home, yourself or as gifts to family and friends. CCW will be selling our delicious Home Baked Goods and we

need donations to help make our Bazaar a success. Donations of bakery can be dropped off in Sebahar Hall on Friday after-

noon 2/22 between 12:00 Noon to 3:00pm, Saturday 2/23 starting at 8:30am and Sunday morning February 24th.

On Tuesday January 29th at the 1:30 p.m. Childrens Mass

we celebrated Catholic Schools Week. The St. Thomas AquinasFaith Family, our 8th Grade teacher, Mrs. Char Klein, as well as theSixth Grade and Eight Grade Children were in the Sanctuary. We cele-brated the Feasts of the Presentation in the Temple (sometimescalled the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary) or Candlemas.We blessed the church candles and had a wonderful processionaround the Church with the children of the St. Thomas Faith Family.The Children and Teachers, as always, were a wonderful inspiration.

We invite all to join our childrens Masses that are held onmost Tuesdays at 1:40 pm (check the bulletin to make sure wehave it on the week you wish to attend).

Living StationsWe are inviting all 5th-12th grade students toparticipate in a re-enactment of the Passion ofthe Christ (Living Stations).

What are Living Stations?Imagine the whole church dark, and then spot-lights come on and you are transported back toGolgatha, where Jesus was nailed to the cross.Living stations recreates 14 stations. All thestations are acted out by students dressed incostumes of the era while a student narratesthe scene. Therefore, most scenes require nolearning of lines.

Why be a part of it?It will be Lent, so do something wonderful forGod. Plus, its a lot of fun, just ask any formercast members. Its also a great way to makefriends and great memories.

Dear St. John the Baptist Parish/School, 7th grade Girls Basketball Team, St. Francis High School, and friends,Thank you for your continued support and prayers for Alex Novak and our family. We wish to express our great apprecia-

tion and gratitude for your fundraising efforts (Winfield Pub Crawl, Kids for Kids Fantasy Football, SJB 7th grade girls basketballteam, dress down days), which have been used to buy ramps to roll Alex into the house, the Hoyer lift that transfers Alex from bed tohis wheelchair, and to cover co-payments for his numerous daily medications and his new wheelchair that was just delivered. Be-cause of his muscle spasms, Alex has not made progress. Last week he finally received Botox injections to alleviate the spasms. TheBotox seems to be helping, so hopefully Alex can start to progress with his physical therapy. We want to thank all who have visitedAlex reading and speaking to him, students that came to sing Christmas carols, and people who have given Alex music CDs which

he listens to daily. Alex is the most responsive on days he has visitors to stimulate him. We especially wish to thank Mike Zierk,President Bednar, Principal Kos, Fr. Tom, SJB & SFHS coaches and teachers for their fundraising efforts, prayers and visits. Futurefundraisers include the K of C Fish Fry on Friday, February 22nd, 5-7:30p at St. Johns, Friday, March 8th, 5:30p-8:30p, a KarateKick-a-thon at the Fitness Station in West Chicago, and Thursday, March28th, a Pub Crawl in Wheaton (organized by Mike Zierk),so come out to have some fun, good food, spirits and help support Alex.
