MIR ZAFAR ALIFriday, Feb. 8, 7:30 p.m. SCADshow, Mainstage

A native of Karachi, Pakistan, Mir Zafar Ali has achieved remarkable success as a visual effects artist on some of the most popular and honored animated films of all time. In the last six years alone, he has contributed to animated feature film Oscar winners Frozen, Big Hero 6 and Zootopia, along with Oscar nominee Moana.

Ali started out creating digital effects for the 2004 disaster epic The Day After Tomorrow. This led to superhero work on Spider-Man 3, The Incredible Hulk and X-Men: First Class. His talents became more widely known working on The Golden Compass and Life of Pi, both Academy Award winners for Best Visual Effects.

Inspired by Jurassic Park as a child, Ali began working on television commercials in Pakistan before moving to the U.S. to enroll at SCAD. With one quarter left before graduating, he sent his reel to visual effects powerhouse Digital Domain and was in Los Angeles two weeks later. Since then, he has worked at Sony Pictures Animation, Rhythm & Hues Studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios. A member of the Visual Effects Society and the Animation Guild, Ali returned to SCAD to complete his degree in 2015.

Awarded at signature events throughout this 40th anniversary year, the SCAD40 Prize is presented to graduates who give all of themselves — hand, head and heart — to their creative careers in the highest ranks of culture and business.

At SCAD, career preparation is woven into every fiber of the university. One asset is the SCAD Casting Office, the only on-site, professionally run casting office in higher education.

Led by the dean of the SCAD School of Entertainment Arts, Andra Reeve-Rabb, former director of CBS prime-time casting in New York, the office provides professional productions access to experienced SCAD actors. The university is among The Hollywood Reporter’s Top 25 Drama Schools and, in 2016, the office placed 178 students in Georgia-based productions. SCAD operates a summer internship with CBS casting in New York and recently launched an academic minor in casting led by Alpha Tyler, former head of casting for Tyler Perry Studios.

In 2017, two SCAD alumni who got their start with the SCAD Casting Office won roles in Netflix series: Kayli Carter stars in Godless, and DeRon Horton stars in Dear White People. Carter also landed a role in the film Private Life opposite Paul Giamatti, and Horton can be seen in Roman J. Israel, Esq. starring Denzel Washington. Other alumni have been cast in shows Stranger Things and Law & Order: SVU.

Recent and upcoming productions with SCAD actors placed by the SCAD Casting Office include BBC’s Living the Dream, Killerman starring Liam Hemsworth, Ang Lee’s Gemini Man starring Will Smith, An L.A. Minute with Gabriel Byrne, as well as Lizzie with Kristen Stewart, Christine and Rings.
