JULY 2015 Finding Our Way Jennifer Tavares, CEcD, President New Member Profiles Mending Earth Junk Care Mending Earth Junk Care is an earth conscious junk hauler. They recycle, reuse, or donate as much of the unwanted junk they remove as possible, to organizations like Tompkins County Solid Waste and the Fingerlakes Reuse Center, re-sellers like Mimi’s Attic and Significant Elements, and antique dealers. “We are the greenest junk removal company in Central NY,” says partner Joel Schadt. “We specialize in environmentally-friendly methods for disposing of unwanted junk and refuse.” And they have a mission for the coming year: to divert 70% of the waste they remove from landfills. The other partners are Ian Tompkins, and Ian’s brother Nate. Ian, Nate and Joel worked as arborists for Cascadilla Tree Care, and formed Mending Earth Junk Care in September, 2014. For now, all three are working full time jobs and running junk jobs on weekends. Large and small services include removal and recycling of appliances, furniture, mattresses, and garbage; recycling of TVs, e-waste (electronics) and refrigerators; and removal of construction debris and yard waste — even problem junk like hot tubs — anything except hazardous waste. The team can also handle office, estate and foreclosure clean-outs. Topsoil, tree, brush, garden waste, flowers, sod, and grass are recycled or composted, and other clean debris (dirt, rock, wood, brick, etc.) are removed and disposed of. Estimates are free, and cost is based on man-hours and # of loads on size of truck. Small or large loads are handled by an 18 yard truck or pickup. Ian Tompkins sums it up by saying, “We are three guys who love our planet, dedicated to sustainability and to our clients.” Mending Earth Junk Care, LLC 39 Lower Creek Rd., Ithaca, New York 14850 (877) 624-9633 | www.mendingearthjunkcare.com Water to Wine Tours and Silver Strand at Sheldrake B&B Water to Wine Tours offers daily 5-hour group winery tours by boat, from the Silver Strand Bed & Breakfast in the heart of the Cayuga Wine Trail. FEMA guides are available at the Chamber, or visit www. ready.gov You may have heard that the Tompkins Chamber has taken the lead on helping to implement a project called the “Wayfinding & Interpretive Signage Project.” What’s Wayfinding? According to the Wayfinding & Interpretive Signage Plan (WISP), it is “knowing where you are spatially in an environment, knowing where your desired location is, and knowing how to get there from your present location. It refers to the user experience of orientation and choosing a path within the environment, and the set of elements that aid orientation.” The WISP was created in 2013-2014 for the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce and funded by the Tompkins County Tourism Program, incorporating input from numerous local stakeholder groups and planning experts. Representatives from the City of Ithaca Planning & Development Board, the Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), County Planning, Cornell University, NYS DOT, TCAT, County Highway, Cornell University, other municipalities, the Downtown Ithaca Alliance, the Chamber, and more came together to participate in creating an ambitious, attractive, effective, and useful signage program for Tompkins County. This program envisions a comprehensive and welcoming signage atmosphere of graphically appealing signs that are useful and instructive to the vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic navigating our roadways, including at least 54 distinct tourism destinations or community assets: County gateway signs; municipal gateway signs along major routes; a district program within the City which designates four distinct districts (waterfront, downtown, East Hill-CORNELL, and South Hill-Ithaca College); parking signage; standard NYS DOT signage, and more. It thoughtfully identifies signs that need removal or replacement, and new signage to clearly and logically support visitors as they navigate sometimes complex traffic patterns, addressing years’ worth of tourist, student, parent, and new resident complaints that our signage is poor, confusing, or simply non-existent. As new technologies begin to address some of the components of this program, the plan has a digital wayfinding component as a next step, and the CVB is currently exploring what that might look like. But, no matter how much GPS technology and smartphones become a part of our lives, drivers and pedestrians will continue to rely on signs to help them anticipate turns, or to reinforce that they’re headed the right way. Over the past several months, the Chamber and the County Tourism Coordinator have held numerous meetings with the primary stakeholders identified in the plan, and made several presentations regarding the importance and purpose, goals, and possible funding model scenarios for plan implementation. The final plan components and funding models are yet to be determined, but we know this project requires significant stakeholder engagement, local cash match funding, installation support, and community support to move forward in 2016-2017. An application for New York State funding will be effective only with substantial local support and participation. Should you have interest in supporting this project, or know an organization that might, please contact me.
