GOD’S TIME
W e either pay attention to or ignore “clock time” as we play in the summer sun and note the earth’s tilt and the lengthen-ing days. We live by time. We reckon time in seconds and
minutes and hours, or we use broader chunks like suppertime and sum-mertime. God keeps another sort of time. God speaks to us of “saving time,” that is, the time of salvation. This sense of time is called kairos, and this time is always now, always present and available, always revealing, often surprising. This Sunday’s readings alert us to the reality and the import of God’s time. Ezekiel and the Gospel of Mark remind us that our labor

FEAST OF FAITH The Preparation of the Altar
T he altar is the focal point of our churches. It is a sign of Christ in our midst; indeed, it has been said that “the
altar is Christ” (Dedication of an Altar, 4). The altar is a table “on which the sacrifice of the cross is perpetuated in mystery throughout the ages until Christ comes”; but it is also the place for a festive meal: “a table at which the Church’s children assemble to give thanks to God and receive the body and blood of Christ” (Dedication of an Altar, 4). Both these functions of the altar are clear in the rites for the preparation of the altar that follow the general intercessions, which remind us of the prepa-rations we make at home for a festive meal. The deacon or altar servers come forward and, bowing, place a cloth known as a corporal (from the Latin for “body”) over the altar cloth. They place the chalice, the cup to be used in the celebration of the Eucharist, and the Sacramentary or Roman Missal, which con-tains the prayers of the Mass, on the altar. EL TIEMPO DE DIOS
O le ponemos atención o ignoramos “la hora del reloj”, cuando jugamos en el sol del verano y notamos la inclinación de la Tierra y la prolongación de los días. Vivimos en el tiempo. Mar-
camos el tiempo en segundos, minutos y horas, o hablamos de segmen-tos más largos como la hora de la cena o el verano. Dios marca el tiempo de otra manera. Dios nos habla de “ahorrar tiempo”, es decir, el tiempo de la salvación. Este sentido del tiempo se llama kairos, y esta vez es siempre ahora, siempre presente y dis-ponible, siempre revelador. FIESTA DE LA FE EL ALTAR COMO LA MESA FAMILIAR
D espués de la Liturgia de la Palabra, la asam-blea y la oración litúrgica cambian de esce-nario. La mirada de
la asamblea, así como todos sus movimientos se fijan ahora en el altar. Este altar tiene forma de mesa, ¡es una mesa! En torno a ella la asamblea comerá el pan y la bebida de salvación. A él van quienes tienen hambre, quienes afectados por su naturaleza humana, han dado paso al pecado en su propia vida y sienten la necesidad de reconciliarse, no sólo consigo mismos, sino con sus hermanos y sobre todo, con Dios. Esta es la mesa de la unidad, de donde fluye el amor sin límites, el pan de vida. A él van quienes se sienten vacíos aun cuan-do lo tienen todo. En esta mesa – altar, no hay diferencia alguna, todos solidarios por la filiación divina, por la fraternidad con Cristo, por la condición humana que nos une en la gracia y en el pecado nos separa. Venimos a esta mesa reafirmando lo que so-mos como hijos e hijas de Dios, venimos a presentar-nos nosotros mismos como don vivo, como ofrenda agradable, venimos a ofrecer un sacrificio de ala-banza, a bendecir a Dios porque él mismo ya nos ha bendecido . -Miguel Arias, Copyright © J.
