POLITICAL RISE• He was the frist vice presidet of the United States and he served 2 years. • As delegate frm Massachusettes to the continental congress, he played a

leading role in persuading congress to adopt the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776.

• Adam's revoulutionary credentials secured him two terms as George Washngton's vice president and his own election as the 2nd president of the united states.

• John Adam's political party was the federalist

DOMESTICS ISSUES...• Adams immediately faced questions concerning development of the U.S.

Navy and the military.• The country debated how to maintain its independence. Federalists, largely

comprising Americans in growing urban areas, favored a strong national government to support the development of commerce

•  Republicans, which included farmers and frontiersmen, equated a strong national government with a monarchy and lack of support for their local, agrarian needs.

FOREGIN POLICY...•  The struggle to maintain peace neutrality.•  President Adams was anxious to avoid war at almost any cost, and he sent

commissioners to France to find some acceptable terms for peace.•   The Jay treaty was very unpopular not only with the American People, but

also with the French Nation. France considered it a violation of the Treaty of Alliance of 1778. In 1778 the French helped the United States win the Revolutionary war against the common evil - Great Britain, in return the United States promised not to make any treaties with England without France's consent.

• Adams kept the nation neutral and postponed the first American War until more than a decade later in 1812.

war between France and England• Negotiated alliances and loans

that directly influenced America's victory over Britain

• In 1779, Adams wrote the Constitution of Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in which he laid out the three branches of government that would form the basis for the U.S. Constitution.

JOHN ADAMS IMPACT AS A PRESIDENT…

• John Adams impact on current events are fairly positive and negative. Historians had a difficult time assessing his presidency due to his decisions with the government and politics. John Adams legacy to the United States was his moral leadership, compassion, and cautious but active foreign policy. His impact on the U.S. would also be from signing the Alien and Sedition Acts. But on the positive note, he was able to establish a strong navy and wrote the Constitution of Commonwealth of Massachusetts in which the three branches of government helped form the basis for the U.S. Constitution.
