President Franklin D. Roosevelt

TRANSCRIPT

Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they can that is by not voting.- So said FDR in a radio address from the White House on October 5, 1944 speaking about Americans rights to vote. Have you ever thought of what it is like to be a great leader? Imagine leading while also being handicapped. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the only American president to be elected four times. He also led America through some of its toughest times.1. http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/?pid=165742. http://www.biography.com/people/franklin-d-roosevelt-94633813. http://www.fdrlibrary.marist.edu/aboutfdr/polio.html4. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_D._Roosevelt#Polio

- The Man who PerseveredWhat is it that propelled Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) to reinsert himself into political life after being diagnosed with Polio? This is something rather difficult to comprehend as Polio at the time for something somewhat mysterious. Franklin Roosevelt developed Polio, which is a disease that overwhelmingly handicaps an individual, in 1921 at the age of 39. At first doctors didnt know how to diagnose FDR and didnt even think of the possibility of Polio at first since it is usually only found in young children. FDR was a strong man and maintained that the pain that he felt in his lower body would pass. While on vacation at his summer home he thought that he could continue on with his normal routine but on the third day after the pain started his wife had had enough and called in the doctor and the he was diagnosed as having pain from a blood clot. This turned out to be the wrong diagnosis as we now know. For most people this could be something that would cause them to move out of the public spotlight which he did initially, but FDR came back in a strong way. He built upon his political career that he had earlier in life and was elected four times as president of the United States. He led the United States through very difficult times such as the Post-Great Depression era and World War II. FDR made some major policy changes that still affect the United States today.Nowadays its hard to imagine someone entering the political life while handicapped to the extent that FDR was, let alone becoming the leader of the free world.
