Fellow FD sailors,Again it was not an easy job to present youwith this new issue of the FD Bulletin, butwith the encouraging help of many sailorsand photographers we managed to put some-thing nice together. Many thanks for yourinput and please do continue to send yourcomments, articles, reports and remarks [email protected].

So what do we have for you this time?

Of course, as ever, an enthousiastic letterfrom our President, Dott. Alberto Barenghi. We are greatful for his uplifting contribution.Dr. Gizmo shines his light on the cleat. Theresult is an interesting story about a guy cal-led Curry and one of his many inventions. This should refresh your memories a bit.

Our Chief Measurer John Best explains theins and outs of some new rule changes. Itseems that there is a bit of confusion, but let’sbe confident that his explanation will be suf-ficient.

Co-editor Casper made the trip to Altea withhelmsman (and father) Fred and had a chatwith Gines Romero, one of the Spanish topFD-sailors. It happened to turn out in a seri-ous interview.

Naturally you will find results from aroundthe world, pictures and the equipment list oftheWC.

We hope that this FD Bulletin will inspireyou for the coming season.Be careful flying out on the water!

Happy Sailing,

Dear friends,

I thank all of you for the increasing success ofthe FD Class during the 2007 sailing season,as shown by the interest of new sailors in theFD and our Class activity.Congratulations and many thanks tothe Centro de Alto Rendimento in Murcia, the Organizing Committee and to the FDSpanish Class for the excellent organizationof the 2007 World Championships, in which72 teams from 14 countries competed. Moreover, the increasing success of the EuroCup and World Cup events show that thestrategy to schedule the International racescalendar with specific and advertised events, scheduled in different countries, seems tokindle the interest of the sailors to increasetheir participation in the races and to beinvolved in Class life.As always, many thanks to all the Clubs orga-nizing the FD races every year, since theyhelp our Class to support and go on to orga-nize the classical events that have become atradition in the annual FD fixtures. With regard to the women FD teams,my bestcongratulations to the German Peggy Bahr, the Spanish Dolores Sanchez-Herrero andthe Dutch Tanja Heijink for their results andparticipation in the most importantInternational races. With regard to the technical matters, the inc-reasing number of carbon riggings adoptedby teams from all countries (in theInternational races, more than 40% of thefleet adopted the carbon profiles) shows thesuccess of this new tool in the technical devel-opment of the FD.The manufacturers, from different countriesin the world (UK, Australia, Italia etc.), aregoing ahead to push the evolution of carbonriggings (mast, boom and spinnaker pole withdifferent profiles, stiffness and fitting) toreach the best performance and reliability atthe minimum weight that, according to theClass rules, will be 8.5 kg.The competition among the manufacturersand the increasing interest of the teams to

compare different technical solutions willallow the carbon riggings to have a furtherand fast evolution. With regard to Class life and promotion thereis some important news.In spring 2008, the first three years of thesponsorship agreement between the IFDCOand Harken Sailing Wear will end.During these first three years of the sponsor-ship contract Harken Sailing Wear suppliedour Class with several clothes of their sport-swear collections. Two weeks ago I went to theWinch - HarkenSailing Wear headquarters, where I met theteam managers. During that excellent mee-ting the IFDCO and Winch confirmed theirreciprocal interest in their brands and so, weagreed to go on with a new sponsorshipagreement until the end of 2012.In a few weeks Winch will show me the nextspring-summer and fall-winter collections for2008. Moreover, besides the actual HarkenSailing Wear,WINCH will add a further col-lection with several models inspired by theFD’s history and emotion. Those clothes, sporting both the Harken -Winch and IFDCO logos, will be available foreach FD Class member with a special dis-count.In detail, the Harken Crew Collection willalways be available with several clothes (jac-kets, polos, gilets, t-shirts etc.) in severalcolours and sizes. Moreover, everyyear Winch will develop and produce fall-winter and spring-summer collections, inwhich some articles will be selected that showthe IFDCO logo.As always, it will be possible to look at theHarken Sportswear Collections with the FDlogo on the IFDCO website and in the FDBulletin. Moreover, there will be a linkbetween the IFDCO and the Harken website.Together with a lot of enthusiastic sailors whohave granted the worldwide success of theFD Class Harken will be inspired by the mostpeculiar feature of the FD Class: to be spor-ting high-tech and innovative solutions. For the same reason, the IFDCO has chosenHarken Sailing Wear as brand toperform the sportswear for the FDteams. The IFDCO, selling the sportswearto the Class members, will collectmoney to spend for the Class pro-motion, advertisement and activity. For instance, it will be very impor-tant to help the young and new FDsailors, increase the participation tospecific events and support thetransport of boats attending theWorld Championships overseas. In 2007 the result of that strategy

allowed the IFDCO to give a grant of€ 900 to every container shipped to Spainfrom overseas, attending the Worlds in MarMenor. That represents just the first step of theIFDCO’s activities to support our teams.Anyway, that process requires time and thecooperation of Class members, NationalSecretaries, etc. to show and improve theadvantages to the sailors.Again in 2008, the IFDCO will be engaged inselling the sailing wear in order to give grantsto support the IFDCO’s activities, in particu-lar the shipping of containers to the nextWorlds in New Zealand. With regard to the sailing activity in 2008,besides the classical races—and particularlythe Euro Cup events—we’ll meet in Rabac(Croatia) next May to attend the EuropeanChampionships there. The meeting in Rabac will be the best chanceto award the Euro Cup and Dawes Cup for2007. Moreover, we will have theCompetitors Hearings, the NationalSecretaries’ meeting and the AGCM.With regard to the sailing activity in 2008,however, the most important news will be theVintage Yachting Games: the event that hasbeen proposed one year ago by Dutch sailorRudy den Outer, ex FD sailor and currentlySoling helmsman.Rudy proposed to create and organize aevent comparable to the Olympic Games, aimed at the former Olympic Classes. For thisreason he contacted me for the FlyingDutchman. The event will be organized every four years, like the Olympiade. The first edition will beheld in Medemblik, Holland, on 20-27 September 2008.I showed this proposal to the IFDCOOfficers at the last AGCM and the NationalSecretaries’ Meeting in Spain and it wasagreed to join the Vintage Yachting Games. The other Classes involved will be: Europe,O-Jolle, Soling and Dragon. The aims of theVYG have been explained, aswell as the selection criteria to adopt by every

Class, through the International Classes andtheir National Secretaries. The VYG goal willbe to have 2 boats per Country in every Class.Personally, I think that the VYG represent aparticular event that is excellently suitable toremember the history of our Class and adver-tise and promote our Class to the media, net-work, sponsors and to the sailors. With regard to the Measurement Committee, according to my proposal, theVYG decided toappoint John Best as Chief Measurer in theevent.Anyway, the Notice of Race for theVYG 2008is quite ready and will be sent to every FDNational Secretary in a few days. The season 2008 will go on with the classicalraces and the “Conrad Gulcher Trophy”,a classical event for the FD Class, asalways organized by the Loosdrecht SailingClub. Finally, we ‘ll have the World Championshipsin Napier, New Zealand during the Christmasholidays. Many sailors seem interested to attend theWorlds and, as always, Frank Nooijen will beengaged to provide us with the best solutionfor transportation.Strengthened by the IFDCO’s team approachand the friendship among all the Officers,Commodores, Sub Committees and NationalSecretaries, we will continue to promote, advertise and develop the FD Class in everyway.Together with new sponsorships to supportClass activities and events it is very importantto promote the FD Class to the media, net-work and sponsors and to improve theIFDCO website. For this purpose it was agreed to develop thewebsite’s graphics and aesthetic aspects: it isquite ready and will be online in a few weeks.Let’s commit ourselves all together, in orderto support and quicken every process toadvertise the FD!Finally, let me thank all the FD sailors and theIFDCOOfficers engaged in the life and activi-ties of our Class.I ‘m looking forward to meeting all of you andI wish everyone good sailing in 2008!

Alberto

Ten years ago the Spanish FD class was almosthistory.Today Spain has one of the most activeFlying Dutchman fleets around the world. Theman responsible for this success is GinesRomero, the well-known helmsman of theESP-6. We tried to see what he had to sayabout all this himself.

(by Casper Schaaf)

Could you introduce yourself? My name is Gines Romero. I started to sailwhen I was four years old, with my father onthe Mar Menor.

In what kind of boat?We had a very old wooden boat, very strongand heavy; 5 metres or something. I broke myfirst mast there on the Mar Menor – a woodenmast – with my father.I started racing more or less seriously in the420 and I tried my first Flying Dutchman in ‘76in a Spanish championship when I was 17years old. Francisco Martinez, now ESP-81,was my crew; he was 19 years old. We werethird! We came from the 420 and only oneweek before the championship we tried theFD. We’d lent a boat, we did this race and itwas okay.

And afterwards? After the 420 I sailed the 470 from 1982 until1989. Then from ‘89 till ‘94 I sailed the Solingand finally the FD again, during the EuropeanChampionship in Murcia in 1997, eleven yearsago. Besides that I did some Vaurien andSnype as well, but seriously only 420, 470,Soling and FD.

I heard you were quite successfull in the Soling.Yes, I prepared the Barcelona Olympics inSoling. I was in the pre-Olympic team, butwasn’t selected to go. I was successfull in Spain– among the best 6 teams or so - , especiallywith strong wind.Actually, I’ve always been atmy best with a lot of wind, in the 470 as well.Internationally, though, I didn’t do so well.Actually, I see myself as a better trainer than asailor. I know very well how to do it, but Idon’t know how to do it, if you know what Imean. I prefer to teach others than to do itmyself. I’m not very intuitive, I’m a worker. When I go well it’s because I train many hoursand prepare the boat many hours, but I’m notso efficient.

It’s exactly like the Bojsen-Møllers said: hoursand hours upon the water and then you can dowell. Some people do very well with not so manyhours. Luis Doreste (winner of the FlyingDutchman gold medal in the BarcelonaOlympics – CS), for example, sailed more withintuition than training. I think, in general,Spanish sailors are more intuitive than work-ers.

Yes, if you look at Marco Sevila. He’s just 17and already shows a lot of talent.Yes, he’s the future of the Spanish class.

So you started sailing FD again in 1997. Whatmade you decide to do that?Yes, after I’d stopped sailing for three or fouryears - because of my daughters and work andsuch things – I started again to sail the FlyingDutchman in 1997.You see, for me it’s impos-sible to stay without sailing. I was workingtoo much during those years and I needed tosail again. I selected the Flying Duthmanbecause it’s not an Olympic class. It’s the boatof my dreams, but not Olympic, which wasperfect for me at that time. I was very tired ofOlympic classes, with the Soling and 470. Inboth classes I tried to be in the OlympicGames – Los Angeles in 1984 and Barcelonain 1992 – but finally the environment was toocompetitive for me.

And the Spanish FD class at that time?I became the Secretary of the class. TheSpanish class was absolutely dead in 1997;there were only one or two other boatsbesides myself at that time. But we pushedand pushed, convinced one guy, another guyand now the class has about twenty boats. Not all of them sailing, but well.

No, but you have some very good teams. There’s about 6 or 7 really good teams inSpain.Yes, two years ago in the Spanish champi-

CRO-51Tin Matulja & Robin Matulja

onship we beat the record. We were sailing onthe Mar Menor then and apart from a fewforeign teams there were 17 Spanish boats inthe water. I think that was the absoluterecord in the history of the Spanish FlyingDutchman class.

So, since 1997 it’s been going upwards con-stantly? Every year a bit more?Well, in the last two years it’s been going a lit-tle bit down. I’m a bit tired: always pushing, pushing, pushing forwards, calling people togo to the races. If people needed a boat, I’dlook for a boat here and there. It’s very hardwork and I have my own work!

What kind of work do you do?I work for big multinational consultancy firm,Cap Gemini, where I’m managing theBarcelona, Valencia and Murcia offices. I’vebeen working with Cap Gemini for the lasttwenty years.

And at the moment you are still the SpanishNational secretary?Yes, but I’m trying to convince Javier Higuera– the crew of Dolores, ESP-9 – to take overthe job. I can help him, but I prefer that hepushes. Otherwise I’m afraid the Spanishclass may be going down again. In the last twoyears I’ve not been pushing the same asbefore.

Last year’s World Championship, you stillorganised that? No, I didn’t, it was organised by the MurciaFederation. We helped a little bit, but the

organisation was theirs.

I thought they did quite a nice job.I don’t agree. I didn’t like the organisation.

Why not?I thought it was a bit ordinary. The sailing wasokay, but the organisation wasn’t so good.

Yes, I suppose they didn’t really try hard for us.We were probably their tenth championshipthat year or something.Yes, this was the problem. They tried to dotoo many events in one year. But the venuethere is fantastic, for sailing. The weather wasnot the usual weather in this stage of the yearthough. Only during the last day we sailedwith the typical wind there. Normally thewind is more like the week before, during theSpanish Championchips.

And what do you think about the Worlds inNew Zealand? We want to go there. There are four or fiveteams interested in the possibility of going. We are talking to a shipping company aboutcontainers, but I’m not sure. Three or fourSpanish boats should really be possiblethough. We’ll probably have to share a con-tainer with the Italians or something like that.

Because of the container business the nextEuro Cup in Altea will be a problem, I’mafraid.Yes, we should probably move the event.Maybe in March or April; maybe Easter, Idon’t know. The best way to do it would be to

send the containers directly from Napier toValencia actually. But we’ll talk with theAltea sailing club and we’ll try to get itmoved.

Have you thought about the Europeans inCroatia already?Yes, we’ll organize some training weekendshere in Altea to prepare for Croatia. Theevent is a bit early for me because I’m stillworking then, but I’ll certainly try to be there. And probably about 4 other Spanish teams aswell.

If I may ask, how old are you now?I’m 49, since last Sunday.

And what are you plans for the future? JustFD?I plan to compete in the Flying Dutchmanmaybe 5 years more. I don’t think I’ll stay inthe class until 60. Last year I bought a newboat which I plan to sail for another four orfive years, but not a new boat.

What did you sail with before this boat? The one I started with in 1997 was an old oneI bought fromAnton Schwarz, with a woodendeck, from 1985 I think. I sailed with thatuntil the championship in Elba, in 2000.Before Gilleleje in 2001 I drove past Maderto pick up a new boat. That’s the boatDolores is sailing with now, with the yellowdeck. And so, last year I bought a newMader.I think this will be my last Flying Dutchmanboat. The boat is like my body though, it getsolder but it’s still going on.

Manfred Curry’s legacy

Manfred Curry was born in Germany in 1899,emigrated to the US and became a citizen ofthat country. He died in 1953, just in time towitness the birth of our beloved FD. He actu-ally sailed in one of the prototypes of the boat.

Curry was, and probably still is, the most suc-cessful German born yacht racer. He baggedmore than 1000 victories. But even more thanthrough his yacht racing, Curry’s legacy liveson because of his work as a sailing-aerody-namics pioneer and through his inventions. Itwas Curry who first introduced a jib that over-lapped with the mainsail. He, very successful-ly, first used this jib in a regatta near theItalian town of Genoa in the 1930’s.As a resultof this success the ‘Genoa’, as it was hence-forth called, remained there to stay.

Curry’s true ticket to fame, however, was hisinvention of a device that nowadays is fea-tured in multitude on almost any sailing boat:the cam cleat. In German, and also in theDutch language, this cleat bears the name ofits inventor: Curryklemme. Of course,Anglophonic sailors cannot stomach thethought of referring to a German and conse-quently never use the term. Rather wouldthey honor Briggs Swift Cunningham II, whoinvented nothing less that the hole in the sailthat proudly bears his name. The French, forwhom the world ends at the frontiers of theirbeloved ‘Hexagon’, refrain from ever men-tioning Curry’s name; they irreverently callthe cleat a ‘taquet coinceur’.And the Italians?Well, are they aware that the Roman empireceased to exist some time ago?

Simple as its principle may seem, Curry’s camcleat is a much cleverer device than meets theeye at first sight. Its secret lies in the geometryof its two jaws each of which is shaped like apart of a mathematical object called the loga-rithmic spiral. This spiral, shown in Fig. 1, has

a number of distinguished features: it is a selfsimilar graph, which means that from whatev-er distance it is viewed, it always looks identi-cal. Secondly, if we look at the angle at whichany part of the spiral intersects a straight lineextending out from the origin to infinity, wesee that this angle is always the same, as isimmediately clear from Fig. 1. Likewise, thespiral intersects any circle at the same angle. This angle is called the pitch of the spiral. Thespiral forms a constant-angle curve and it isthis property that gives cam cleats their essen-tial properties: they hold a variety of ropediameters and their holding power is inde-pendent of this diameter and they always holdtight, independent of the force on the rope. Also, the cleat is insensitive to the precisedirection of the pull of the rope.

A special logarithmic spiral is one with a pitchof about 170. This so-called golden spiral isclosely related to the Fibonacci series and theGolden Ratio, both favorites in mathematicsas well as in renaissance art. The pitch of thejaws of Curry’s cleat is slightly bigger, typical-ly about 200.

Fig. 1. A logarithmic spiral with a pitch of 100.

Nature seems to have a preference for mathe-matical beauty and, indeed, logarithmic spiralsappear all around us: for example in the shape

of the shells of certain mollusks, in tropicalstorms (see Fig. 2), and in spiral galaxies. Aninteresting technical application is the socalled ‘friend’, a device inserted into verticalcracks by rock climbers as protection againstfalls. The friend is basically an inverted camcleat (see the drawing at the right of Fig. 2).

How cam cleats workLet us have a look at exactly how the camcleat manages to prevent a rope from slipping.Firstly, let us ignore the fact that the jaws ofthe cleat have a jagged inner edge and that therope is fluffy and compressible. Now look atFig. 3. The beak of the cleat is represented bytwo logarithmic spirals. Of course, in a realcleat the jaws form only a segment of the spi-ral, but as long as the rope diameter is in theright range this does not matter. If we analyzethe forces on the rope and the cleat, we see thefollowing: the rope is held taught by a tensionforce T. If the rope is not to slip, each cam ofthe cleat must supply half this force as a reac-tion force. This reaction force originates fromthe axel of the cam. Looking at Fig. 3 we seethat the torque exerted by this pair of forcestends to make the blades of the cleat rotate. This rotation is prevented because the ropepushes back on the cams. The balance oftorques requires that the size if this so called‘normal’ force N be just ½T times the ratio ofthe two lever arms. This ratio is 1/ tan α, wherea is the pitch of the spiral. For a = 200 the ratiois slightly bigger than 3 and it does not dependon the width of the gap between the jaws. Therope will stay put if the friction force that thecleat can supply is large enough. It is a well-established fact in physics that the maximumfriction between two objects is just the normalforce multiplied by a constant called the coef-ficient of friction. This friction coefficientdepends on the two materials and to someextent on surface roughness. Thus, we find thatour cleat works if the friction coefficientbetween our rope and the material of thecams is bigger than tan a or about 1/3. It clear-ly is. Even if we were to replace the rope by a

wooden rod, the cleat would still hold it. Ifyou have a cam cleat in your tool box youcan try it at home if you don’t believe me.The cleat will not hold a polished steel rod:The friction coefficient between this materi-al and the aluminum of the jaws is below 1/3.

Fig. 3 Forces on the blades of a cam cleat:The ratio of the normal force N and the ten-sion and friction forces T/2 is set by the non-rotation equilibrium of the blades. This ratiodepends only on the pitch of the spiral andis equal to tan α.

You don’t have to be a rocket engineer toreinvent the wheel. It appears though that ithelps if you want to reinvent the cam cleat. In 1978, a guy called Ray Jardine who was anaeronautics engineer, as well as a keen rockclimber, invented the already mentioned‘friend’, a spring loaded camming device forrock climbing based on the logarithmic spi-ral. These devices are designed to withstandshock loads of a falling climber which caneasily exceed 10 times his body weight. Aswith our cleats, friends, in principle, alwayshold, because the friction coefficientbetween the aluminum blades and the rockexceeds the tangent of the pitch angle of theblades (which in this case is about 140). Thenormal force exerted by the rock on thecams can be several tons. Climbers can befairly confident that the device does not slipand they can only hope that their friend canwithstand the huge forces without breakingapart. Fortunately for them, most of the timetheir hope is vindicated.

Anyway, the next time you sail and you pullin the sheet of your genoa and lodge it firm-ly into its Curryklemme, spare a thought forHerr Dr. Manfred.

This year’s rule changesYou will all be well aware that this year thereare a few rule changes taking place. One, themast weight, has been eagerly awaited, butthere are various others which I will try to putinto context.

New Rule58. The Weight of the Mast (excluding tra-peze hooks, shroud length adjustment sys-tems and baby stays) must not be less than aminimum of 8.5 kg.Mast corrector weights oflead must be permanently attached to themast above the limit mark (band) No.1.

The height of the centre of gravity of the mastmust not be less than a minimum of 2500 mmabove the top of Limit Mark (band) Number1.The previous rule was crafted in 2004 to allowa period of transition for the class to adoptcarbon masts. This transition period wasscheduled to end in 2008, and so the carbonmast proviso is now superfluous.

New Rule90. RRS 50.4 shall not apply to the FD class.

RRS 50.4 attempts to define the differencebetween headsails and spinnakers, but unfor-tunately no existing genoas or jibs qualify asheadsails under this rule. Presumably, there-fore, they have to be regarded as spinnakersand class rule 113 limits the sail inventory fora regatta series to only one spinnaker! Thus,in order for us to continue to use two genoasthe class requires to be exempt from RRS50.4 as is permitted by the RRS.

New Rule39.WeightThe hull weight, including all fixed and move-able fittings (trapeze hooks, shroud lengthadjustment systems, and baby stays), buoyan-cy apparatus as prescribed in Rules 44-47(whether removable or fixed) and runninggear, but not including main, genoa and spin-naker sheets, must not be less than a mini-mum of 130.0 kg.

The way this rule is now written is just tomake it clear that these items, which wouldnormally be part of the ERS defined rigging, are not included in the mast weight but musttherefore be included in the hull weight. Itwill save all those long and involved discus-sions at measurement, sorry, regatta inspec-tion and will allow us all to get on with ourlives.

New Rule33. DeckThe deck shall not be higher than 10mmabove the deck line and must also be belowthe deck line at the mast partners. The deckline is the imaginary line between the top ofthe transom at the centreline and the highestpoint of the stem (excluding stem fittings).

Instruction: Erect a taut line 150 mm aboveboth the stem and the top of the transom, i.e.parallel to the deck line. The mast partnersmust be at least 150 mm below this line andthe rest of the deck at least 140 mm belowthis line. The original FD rule was that all the deck hadto be below the deck line and gave the FD itsaesthetically pleasing lines. Some years agothe rule was changed in order to emphasisethat the mast partners were not allowed tosupport the mast at a point above the deckline. The rule 68, for band #1, was alsochanged to require this band to be below thedeck level (so that this could be easily seen)rather than the deck line (which could be anarbitrary distance above the deck level).

It was only recently realised that rule 33allows an arched deck, similar to the 505, pro-vided only that the mast partners are belowthe deck line. This is definitely not what theIFDCO wants. It would be ideal to go back tothe original deck line, but unfortunately thereare some FD’s bobbing about out therewhich now have decks which are some 10mmabove the deck line, and so, to accommodatethese boats the above rule has been writ-ten. Call it housekeeping.

New Rules49. The Trapeze Harness may be attacheddirectly or indirectly to a trapeze wire or linebut only by means of a single quick releasesystem (2 seconds). The weight of the trapezeharness must not exceed a maximum of 4.0 kgand shall float after complete immersion.Thetrapeze harness is separate from and shall notconstitute a personal buoyancy aid, asrequired by rule 78. 78. The following mustalways be carried on board:

2 paddles, minimum length 1000mm, each ofminimum weight 0.25 kg.2 adequate personal buoyancy aids, definedas devices worn around the upper part of thetorso, capable of 50 N buoyancy and meetingthe European CEN or an equivalent stan-dard.The trapeze harness shall not be consid-ered a personal buoyancy aid.

It is important to emphasize that, althoughthe trapeze harness must float, it is not a per-sonal buoyancy aid. Furthermore, buoyancy

added to the back and lower parts of a tra-peze harness could lead to a crew floatingupside down, or at least face down. The per-sonal buoyancy aid must have floatation onthe chest and be a separate item of equip-ment.

New standards for PFD’s (personal floatingdevices) and the quick release hooks on tra-peze belts are being developed and will nodoubt be implemented by ISAF when com-pleted.We were presented with a PFD with atrapeze hook attached to it, i.e. a combineddevice. This is not acceptable, as FD classrules require both a 50N PFD and the trapezebelt to float! Although buoyancy built into atrapeze harness is acceptable and essential, itdoes not qualify as a PFD. A separate PFDfor the crew must be on board when racing, and worn when the Y Flag is flying.

New Rule71. Except when in the centre plane of themast spar, the central axis of the boom sparshall intersect the mast spar centre plane at adistance of not more than 60mm from the aftedge of the mast spar.

It was observed that a number of gooseneckshad the vertical axis of rotation some dis-tance from the aft face of the mast. No prob-lem, this had the dual advantages of slacken-ing the foot tension of the mainsail as onebore away and allowing the boom to be car-ried more square on the run. There is nointention to forbid this practice, but in theinterests of safety it is suggested that this belimited, if allowed to go to excess this can andwill put an unacceptable torque on the mastand could easily lead to mast failure.Specifying such a rule in other classes haslead to the above wording. The 60 mm limitwas chosen by taking a walk around the boatpark at an International regatta and based oncommon practice in the class.

There you have it Ladies and Gentlemen.Therules may seem a dry old thing to write about, but they are there for our Health and safety.A bit like speed cameras really; they arethere for your safety too! When PeterHinrichsen drafted these rules he was doing abit of housework, cleaning up the rule bookand also ensuring that what we think of as anFD remains an FD. If anybody has anyqueries, both Peter and I can be quite easilycontacted via e-mail or even snail mail.

The Sailing Napier offers world class sailing conditions and facilities. There are fantastic facilities ashore with a lot of space at the sailing club and many launching ramps. I t is a short sail from the very protected harbour out to the racecourse.

The predominant wind for January is a sea breeze from the East to North East at 8to12 knots with 1 to 2 metre swell. This typical wind combined with the ocean swell provides fantast ic downwind sailing. The other common wind is an offshore gradient northwesterly – typically 12 to 17 knots. Current is less than one knot and even across the racecourse area.

The Napier Sailing Club is very experienced in running national and international events. http: // napiersailingclub.org.nz/ Haw k es Bay Hawke’s Bay Wine Country is a holiday dest inat ion where the sun seems to forever shine.
