Senator Haskell indicated his concern for asituation occurringin the western states where cattle have been discovered mutilated. Thebizarre mutilattons involve loss of left ear, left eye, sex organ, andtheblood drained from the carcass withno traces ofblood left on tie groundandnofootprints.

Senatorllaskell repeated his request that the Flil enter theinvestigation. Theprovisionsof theInterstateTransportationof StolenCattleStatute,Title 18, U.S. Code,Section2311,wereexplainedto him. It waspointedoutthattheremustbeaninterstatetransportation.

Senator Haskell said that he had no iniorniation that an interstate transpo -tion hadoccurredin anyof thesecases. lie saidhefelt thiswastoobigfor the local authorities, andthe FBI with its resources couldcometo asolution.He saidtheranchersare gettingconsiderablyworriedoutthereandhefelt ii theFBI wouldjustentertheinvestigationit wouldhaveadeterrenteffect. Senator Haskell rccont ct'edme thisafternoon and said that .

he hadreceivedacallfrom Dans i-Idwards,editor ofthepaperinBrush, Colorado, who furnished information that U. S.Army helicoptershad beenseenin thevicinity of where some of thecattle were mutilatedand that he, Edwards, had been threatened but Senator Haskell did notknow whatsort oi threats Edwards had received or bywhom.

.' Hewas advised that this irnformationnwould be furnished toour Denver Office and that Denver would closely follow the situation.Senator Haskell expressed his appreciation;

A survey of newsclips and otherliterature on cattle mutilation seems

to indicate that the whole business

started with the mysterious death ofSnippy. Snippy wm shorse whosemutilated body was found on aranchnear --Alamosa, Colorado, eight yearsago. Snippy s throat had been cut andesh from the head and neck re-

moved. Also removed were Snippy sbrain and stomach. Snippy s ownerwas convinced that his horse had

been "zapped by a flying saucer."Snippy s bones may still be viewed inthe museum at Adams State College

in Alamusa.

U.F.0.'s arestill being blamed forthe cattle mutilations. Some students

of the craze simply see no otherex-

planation. Carl Whiteside, of theColorado Bureau of Investigation,evidently felt itnecessary to contestthis hypothesis, since he told me seri-ously, We do not feel these peoplehave any magical quality that putsthem in the realm of the supernaturalor some alien planet civilization.

The occupants of U.F.O.'shave not

so far appeared to refute slanderousallegations abouttheir attitudetoward terrestrial livestock. Peopleassociated with occult groups, on theother hand, have been vehementlytrying to distance themselves fromthe unknown slicers. Backat the

The teacherat KilgoreJunior Col- -legewas sufliciently revolted by thetheme's detailstodestroy it forth-with. The student said he had heardthe story from afriend familiar with

the satanlsts. An English professorfrom Pennsylvania told John lllalzeigof the Fort Wort].-. Star-Telegram

that he was familiar with the Sons

of Satan group. had some of its morn-bers in his class, and had seen somegirls who'dcut o 'their ngers andpieces of their ears and things likethat." Their primary thrill, headded, was to eat their own flesh.

All this information was passed onto Don Flickinger, an Alcohol, To-bacco and Firearms agent in Minne-apolis. Early this year Flickinger be-came the main federal investigatorof the mutilation phenomenon, forsomewhat bizarre reasons. Cattle

Out of all the investigations onlyone clue has emerged. In the late

summer aColorado rancher found ablueplastic valise on his land.In itwere a cow'stongue, an ear and nscalpel.
