3. Overview of FbF bioServer The FbF bioServer is a high-speed, high-volume biometric transaction-processing engine
with an objective of eliminating the time and cost required to develop and integrate a
scalable biometric matching server.
The FbF bioServer represents an abstraction of multiple biometric algorithms and server
topologies into a single, unified, message-based biometric identification and verification
platform. Using the same common messaging architecture that is used by the FbF Device
Listener, the bioServer is able to greatly simplify the process of submitting biometric
identification requests and receiving results. The synchronous Windows Communication
Foundation (WCF) interface is designed to provide a rapid response with a biometric result.
The bioServer is designed to support scalable deployments ranging from a single PC-class
computer to hundreds of servers distributed across a wide area network. With a common
strategy across such a large variance in operating capacity, the bioServer is able to more
effectively serve as a universal model for processing biometric requests in both small scale
and nation scale solutions. Further, this scalability will allow the bioServer to more
effectively be deployed in remote and distributed processing scenarios where 1,000’s of
local servers are required in the absence of reliable network connectivity (e.g. developing
nations and military applications).
The core of the bioServer architecture is the suite of biometric engines that are developed
by Neurotechnology. While the bioServer will support engines from other developers, the
multi-modal, highly scalable design of the Neurotech engines is ideally suited to the strategy
of the bioServer. Each bioServer will include a minimum of one NServer (the most basic
Neurotech server) and any combination of Cluster Servers and Accelerators to meet the
performance requirements of the installation. Further, the data model of the bioServer
includes a unique taxonomy that allows for unlimited number of organizations to securely
store their biometrics on common servers. This unlimited data segregation means that a
single, hosted instance of the bioServer could easily handle thousands of organizations
without fear of comprising their data integrity or impacting their individual transaction
performance. This ability to host large-scale biometric server farms is particularly suited to
FbF’s ability to operate in a true web environment and allow for instantly deployed
software-as-a-service business models.

FbF bioServer – Administration Manual Understanding Taxonomy
Fulcrum Biometrics LLC 17
6. Understanding Taxonomy Taxonomy is basically process of identifying and dividing available resources sharing similar
properties into different groups. Taxonomy also allows defining relationship schemes like
parent-child hierarchy for parent groups and their child groups (Ex. “Company” is a parent
group which normally have different departments like “Finance”, “Administration” and
“Human Resource” as subgroups, each of which can further have different “Team of
workers” as third level sub-groups under them)
Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
78248 0 0 0 0 0 0
78248 1 0 0 0 1 0
FbF bioServer uses Taxonomy to classify the biometric data (Templates) into different
logical groups. Classification of data under different user defined taxonomies makes it
possible to dedicatedly run an instance of Matching Server for a particular Taxonomy which
is nothing but a set of Biometric data (Templates). A FbF bioServer can have multiple
instance of Matching Server dedicatedly working on different taxonomy. (To know how to
create multiple instance of Matching Server, please refer to “Add\Edit a Matching Server”
section)
A matching server instance only operates on the Biometrics data registered under the
taxonomy it is running for (including its child groups). For example, a fingerprint matching
request sent to bioServer for Taxonomy “78248:2:0:0:0:0:0:0” will be only matched against
the data classified under the given Taxonomy and its child group i.e. “78248:2:X:X:X:X:X”
(where X could be any number between 0 to 9) including Taxonomy “78248:2:1:0:0:0:0”

Some of the major advantages and features achieved by the use of Taxonomy are:
1. Biometric Data Isolation: Total Biometric data can be divided under different Taxonomy
groups which makes it possible to complete isolate the biometrics of one group from
others. To understand it thoroughly, consider the case when the biometric data of 2
different companies is stored on the same bioServer. By storing the Biometric data of
these 2 companies under 2 different taxonomies (Ex. “78248:1:0:0:0:0:0:0” and
“78248:2:0:0:0:0:0:0”), it is possible to provide seamless isolation and privacy to each
one of them from the other during all the Biometric Processes like Enrollment,
Generalization and Matching.
2. Load Distribution and Balancing: By dividing the complete Biometric data logically
under different taxonomies and running multiple instances of matching servers (one
instance per Taxonomy with different configuration) the total operational load on a
bioServer can be divided and balanced easily.

Q: I know how to boot a machine using bootable DVD Drive but how booting from a UFD
works?
A: Different BIOS implementations can support booting from USB devices in the following
ways. Boot the system to BIOS menu and configure the system to any of the following
settings as per your requirement.
1. The BIOS might have a generic "Boot from USB disk" option that boots from any USB
disk detected that includes an active partition.
2. The BIOS might only let you select a specific USB disk to boot from.
3. The BIOS might let you configure which port to boot from.
Q: What are the advantages of booting from a UFD over DVD?
A: The following are the advantages of booting from a UFD over booting from an optical
drive:
1. Small form factor: UFDs bring the advantage of size and power. This means you can
build devices that have smaller form factors; the storage does not require the

majority of the space in a device. Power requirements for a UFD are also significantly
less than DVD ROMS because of a lack of moving parts.
2. Portability: The smaller form factor also increases portability; USB connectivity
makes it easy to replace the hardware if a failure occurs.
3. Better tolerance of shock, dust, and temperature: Because UFDs lack moving parts
and have reduced complexity, most UFDs are better able to handle shocks, dust, and
temperature variations compared to optical media.
4. Initial and Maintenance Cost: Initial investment and maintenance cost of using USB
media is way lower than optical media. Also, the UFDs are a reusable media which
allow virtually infinite number of read and write operation which is not true with
optical media.
Q: How can I convert a simple UFD to a bootable UFD?
A: Use the following set of instructions to make a UFD bootable:
1. Plug-in the UFD (4GB Minimum) to any Windows Vista or 7 machine where you have
administrative access to Window Command Line Tool.
2. Backup all the data from the UFD as we are going to format it to make it as bootable.
3. Open elevated (with administrative privileges) Command Prompt. To do this, type in
CMD in Start menu search field and hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter. Alternatively, navigate to
Start > All programs >Accessories > right click on Command Prompt and select run as
administrator.
4. When the Command Prompt opens, enter the following commands one by one:
a. DISKPART and hit Enter.
b. LIST DISK and hit Enter. Once you enter the LIST DISK command, it will show the
disk number, name and capacity of your UFD. In this step you need to enter all
the below commands one by one and hit enter. As these commands are self
explanatory, you can easily guess what these commands do.
c. SELECT DISK 1 (Replace the disk number in this command with your disk number)
d. CLEAN
e. CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
f. SELECT PARTITION 1
g. ACTIVE
h. FORMAT FS=NTFS QUICK
i. (Format process may take few seconds)
j. ASSIGN
k. EXIT

5. Now plug out the UFD from the machine and plug-in again. By this point we have
made the drive bootable. You simply need to copy the desired content to the UFD
drive and reboot the machine.
6. If you have configured the machine’s BIOS to boot from UFD drive then you machine
will show the appropriate menu boot from the UDF.
