fauna of the torricelli’s - tenkile
TRANSCRIPT
Fauna of the Torricelli’s
Produced by the Tenkile Conservation Alliance | Funded by UNDP/GEF
This Booklet is designed for the people of the Torricelli Mountain
Range to highlight significant animal species found within their special places.
The Tenkile Conservation Alliance (TCA) aims to encourage you to preserve
these species as the guardians of the forest. The Torricelli Mountain Range is
your land to nurture for the benefit of future generations.
This booklet was created by Jim and Jean Thomas of the Tenkile Conservation
Alliance and funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants
Program (SGP) which is part of the United Nations Development Program.
How to use this bookletInside the Torricelli Mountain Range you have a large number of plants and
animals. In Science we call this biodiversity, the variety of living things.
This booklet has been created to show you which animals are significant to
Science and the importance placed on them internationally. Some of these
species will be valuable to you in Papua New Guinea and some are just found
within the North Coast Ranges of New Guinea. A few species are just found
here - endemic to the Torricelli Mountain Range.
This booklet contains only a fraction of the overall biodiversity of the
Torricelli’s and focusses only on the fauna. It is an overview of the special
animals found here - we call them flagship species.
Each species will have:
n a photo of the animal. Most of these photos have been taken by Jim
and Jean Thomas if not, the photographer has been credited.
n The Common Name which is the most commonly used English
speaking name.
n The Scientific Name which is the name scientists give the animal once
they identify it. They usually use Latin tok ples.
n The Tok Ples name is blank so you can write in your own tok ples name
for that animal.
n The IUCN Red list classification which is a global database to determine
if a species is close to extinction or not. This is an important way to
recognise which species need help and which animals are safe.

INTRODUCTION
532
Explanation of the IUCN Red list categoriesScientists from around the world get together to discuss the classification of
species and identify their population.
Kain olsem wanpela village census bilong ol abus. Sapos namba bilong em
igo antap, oli kolim Least Concern - namba em orait. Sapos namba igo daun
na klostu pinis, oli kolim Endangered o critically endangered. Sapos namba
bilong em dai pins olgeta, oli kolim Extinct.
If a species is listed as Critically Endangered we encourage you not to hunt
this species. Many of the villages TCA works with have already agreed to
not hunt the Tree Kangaroos, which is great but you may see a species in this
booklet which you think is close to finishing.
If you see something that is listed as Least Concern or Unknown this may
mean we do not have enough information to know if it is close to finish or
not. In Papua New Guinea we do not have a lot of people studying and
counting every species so it is hard to really know if an animal species is
going to become extinct or not. You can help us by telling us which species
you think is becoming harder to find and hunt in the rainforest.

qTenkile or Scott’s Tree Kangaroo (Endemic to TMR)
English Name: Scott’s Tree Kangaroo
Scientific Name: Dendrolagus scottae
Tok Ples Name: ________________________
IUCN Status: Critically Endangered
The Tenkile (the flagship of TCA) was first
described by Professor Tim Flannery in 1992,
it was unknown to the outside world until this
time. It is now being protected by the villages
that have Tenkile on their land. Its’ population
is thought to be greater than 300 - an increase
from 100 in 1996. The Tenkile is just found in
the Torricelli’s, but there is another sub-species
(kain olsem cousin) in the Bewani Mountain
Range called Fiwo.
Male Tenkile can reach 16kg in weight (TCA
data - 16.1kg, adult male 2005). Female Tenkile
can reach over 10kg (TCA data - 10.2 kg,
female (Suna) 2007). It is thought, through the
research and knowledge of Flannery, TCA and
communities, that Tenkile can live solitarily, in
pairs and small family groups.
Historically Tenkile was found in over 300 km2,
the western Torricelli’s. Today it is known to
occur in half of that ~150 km2. So, although
Tenkile has increased in numbers it still has
a long way to go. TCA would like to see
the Tenkile population reach 1,000 by 2030.
wWeimang or
Golden-mantled Tree KangarooCommon Name: Golden-mantled
Tree Kangaroo
Scientific Name: Dendrolagus pulcherrimus
Tok Ples Name: ________________________
IUCN Status: Critically Endangered
The Weimang (TCA’s second flagship species)
was also described by Tim Flannery - in
1994. The Weimang is found in the Torricelli
Mountain Range in PNG and in the Foja
Mountain Range in West Papua. It’s numbers
are low due to hunting and changes to the
landscape. It is now being protected in PNG by
the villages that have it on their land and TCA
believes their number to be around 500 in
the Torricelli’s.
Weimangs are the smallest of all 14 species of
tree kangaroos. Both male and female Weimang
can reach over 7kg in weight (TCA data - 7.2kg
male (Nunsi); 7.4 kg female (Asier) - 2009).
In PNG, the Weimang is known to have a
distribution of 300 square kilometres - it
occurred in a larger area previously. TCA hopes
to see it expand in numbers and distribution.

srCommon Spotted CuscusCommon Name: Common Spotted Cuscus
Scientific Name: Silocuscus maculatus
Tok Ples Name: ________________________
IUCN Status: Least Concern
Found throughout New Guinea and in Cape York Peninsula in Australia the
Common Cuscus is an animal many people identify with in PNG. Hunted for its’ fur
and meat this species is probably more under threat than what we realise. Do you
think this species should be better protected in the Torricelli’s?
t Black-Spotted CuscusCommon Name: Black-spotted cuscus
Scientific Name: Spilocuscus rufoniger
Tok Ples Name: ________________________
IUCN Status: Critically Endangered
This species is the largest possum in New Guinea and the second largest possum of
all - the largest is the Bear Cuscus (Ailurops ursinus), found in Sulawesi. It is found
throughout the North Coast Ranges - from outside Madang to the Birds Head in
West Papua. In the Torricelli’s it is found in the southern foothills and some lowland
rainforest. It is still hunted and needs greater protection wherever it is found. If you
see this species do not hunt it please - it is critically endangered (klostu klostu pinis).
eGrizzled Tree KangarooCommon Name: Grizzled Tree Kangaroo
Scientific Name: Dendrolagus insutus
Tok Ples Name: ________________________
IUCN Status: Vulnerable
The Grizzled Tree Kangaroo is the biggest of all
14 species of tree kangaroos*. Males can reach a
weight over 17 kg (TCA data 17.1 kg adult male
2009). Females can reach over 14 kg (TCA data
14.3 kg adult female 2009).
The Grizzled has a wide distribution - from
near Wewak, in East Sepik Province PNG, to
the Bird’s Head in West Papua. It has the largest
distribution of all tree kangaroos.
The people of the Torricelli Mountain Range in
PNG are protected this species - via cessation
of hunting and establishing Protected Areas.

Over to youTell TCA what species are important to you and your culture? Take note of
what species you see at your village, in the garden or in the rainforest.
If you have killed an animal that you see in this booklet please keep a part of
its body - fur, feathers, bones, skin, photograph and send it to TCA. We can
show it to scientists and this will help us learn more about it.
