Senator Margaret Chase Smith urged Congress to establish a date for Father’s Day - which was signed into law in 1972 by then President Richard Nixon - a Congressional resolution setting the day permanently. And, so it was! And yes, I do have many memories of Daddy - growing up on a farm, he could use help, for there was always lots to be done. My brother Carlyle and I helped set, chop and care for tobacco. Then it came time to pull, cure, grade and gather the crop. There was always something to do, plus so many chores!! I can remember that my brother and I had always wanted to go with Daddy to the Winston-Salem Tobacco Market, then one day (and I do mean one day only) he let us go with him to the market. This was a “vacation” that we never forgot. Daddy bought us candy and barbecue, took us on a “tour” of the tobacco market, and then it was back home to go to school!! Another remembrance - Daddy was setting tobacco plants into the ground by hand, and my son Tommy, aged 5, was following close behind...but Tommy was pulling the plants up - handing them back to Daddy almost as fast as they were being set. And, you guessed it, Tommy’s tobacco setting days ended quickly, except for the story to be retold and enjoyed in later years!! There is so much to tell of days gone by - always a new experience, always learning!! HAPPY FATHER’S DAY 2011 - may there be many, many more!!
