THE KERYGMA, PART 3.1 Rescued So far, we have looked at the first two parts of the kerygma — that is, the fundamental proclamation of the Gospel message. We have seen the goodness of
creation and the horrific news that explains why everything is so messed up. We stressed that without this second part, the "bad news," the Gospel is just news. The Gospel, however, is not just news; it is excellent news! It's excellent news because of the third part of the kerygma: God's response to sin in the person of Jesus — or to sum up in a word: "rescued."
We could sum up the essential message of the Gospel as You matter! You matter more than you can even imagine — the God who made the universe 46 million light-years across fights for your love. The God who created 100 billion galaxies with 100 billion stars in each dies for love of you. Jesus became man, died, and rose from the dead because we could not free ourselves from the shackles of sin. The Gospel is excellent, marvelous, fantastic news because God has come to His people and set them free -- free from the power of Sin, the power of Death, and free from Satan's grip. God astoundingly accomplished this.
Remember, the purpose of hearing the Good News and praying with it is to be overwhelmed by God's love,
mercy, and power. The goal is to respond to His love by giving our hearts, minds, and lives to Jesus Christ in faith. The plan is to share this Good News with family, friends, co-workers, and all those we meet. When we do, we unleash the power of the Gospel in their lives, so they become overwhelmed by God's love for them. They will know as we do that they matter to God.
Pray with this reality this week. Soak in the Good News of God's merciful love. In prayer, ask Him to show you how much you matter to Him. Next time, we will go deeper into how Jesus rescued us - hint it has to do with the Passion. I bet it is something you have never heard.
In God's Merciful Love, Fr. Browning
