Intrusion Prevention System (IPS)Fortinet’s IPS technology, FortiGate, safeguards your school’s network from known and unknown threats, protecting critical applications from external and internal attacks.

Backed by automatic, real-time updates delivered by FortiGuard Services, FortiGate leverages a database of thousands of unique attack signatures to stop attacks that might evade conventional firewall defences, plus anomaly-based detection that enables the system to recognise threats for which no signature has yet been developed. It offers a wide range of features that can be used to monitor and block malicious network activity including predefined and custom signatures, protocol decoders, out-of-band mode (or one-arm IPS mode), packet logging and IPS sensors. Content Filtering that gives you control in and out of the classroomToday’s filters need to provide safe, fast access to valuable educational resources and connections whilst effectivelypreventing access to inappropriate content.As part of our partnership with Lightspeed Systems, we provide compliant web filtering based on a comprehensive education-specific database that gives your school fully customisable policies. The user-friendly interface integrates with both Windows Active Directory and Mac Open Directory giving you the freedom to tailor internet access by user, IP address, group, organisational unit or domain and you can expand or contract internet access for specific periods.

The comprehensive and accurate URL database, which subscribes to the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), updates daily and has more than 1 billion entries grouped into education specific categories, so you can be assured of the safe search of both websites and images. If you wish to block certain pages or restrict the download of a particular type of file this can be applied quickly and easily.

Lightspeed System’s memory allows you to view up to 3 months’ worth of historical internet usage and our own back-up system will extend this to 3 years. This information can then be presented to the authorities or the police if required.

Effective Mobile FilteringWith the use of tablets becoming commonplace in schools, it’s vital to ensure that children are protected when using mobile devices on or off school premises.Lightspeed System’s Mobile Filtering allows you to extend your existing filtering policies to your off-network devices. This includes Apple devices, netbooks, MacBooks, laptops, Windows 8 tablets and Android devices, ensuring that your students remain safe around the clock – wherever they are. The Mobile Filter will offer you exactly the same level of protection and reporting that you receive for your on-site devices, transparently communicating Internet browser requests from a mobile device to the cloud-based filtering system. This system references the URL requests with its content database and policy settings and either allows or blocks the request.

Your InstallationDedicated Leased LineSchools Broadband recommends a dedicated leased line installation for all secondary schools.This will give you your very own fibre connection, which you won’t share with anyone else, so it avoids any issues with contention. With a leased line you will have the same upload speed as download speed, up to 10Gbps. They also come with a service level agreement of 99.95% guaranteed uptime.

SIP TrunkingAs part of our installation to secondary schools we will fit SIP trunking at no extra cost.A SIP trunk will allow you to make all of your phone calls over a specially segmented bandwidth of your leased line connection, meaning you’ll receive guaranteed call quality and see a significant reduction in your school’s phone bills! Schools Broadband will charge just £9.95 per month for each line, saving you c £5.00 per line per month on an ordinary BT line which would normally cost c £15.00 per month. This could amount to a saving of £1,500 per year for an average sized secondary school. Our SIP trunking includes unlimited free UK landline calls at any time of the day with mobile calls charged at a competitive rate. There’s no need to replace your existing phones and you’ll be able to keep all of your existing numbers – plus you’ll have the flexibility to add or remove lines quickly and easily when you need to.

Latimer Arts College, KetteringWe’re a large secondary college and have quite a complex set-up on our internal network with multiple VLANs and Windows Domain Controllers, but Schools Broadband installed everything to integrate with our network so that we wouldn’t have to reconfigure it. We now have a dedicated 1:1 fibre leased line and get 100Mbit of speed, which is 2.5 times the speed we had before.

As the FortiGate device is also a wireless access controller, we also bought 20 access points to be placed around our college which can all be controlled from it. So we not only have a large dedicated firewall, we also now have direct control over our content filtering, security and quality of service policies, which wasn’t possible when our broadband was supplied by the local authority.

We also decided to invest in a VoIP system. Schools Broadband installed a VoIP gateway for us and configured it to work with our existing telephone system. This alone is saving us around £2,000 a year on the ISDN rental we used to have to pay BT, so our Business Manager is very happy!
