Letter from the PublisherHello everybody! Summer is here at last . So far this year, we are getting a lot of positive feedback from the people we’re talking to in the motorcycle industry. Even while some continue to talk about a double dip recession, it’s not stopping others from buying motorcycles, parts and accessories, and considering the last couple of years in the motorcycle business, it’s a welcome change.

The weather has sure been a plus so far this year. Except for last weekend in the Poconos of course! Go figure it had to rain all weekend. We hope all of you who came out despite the weather for Rally at the Rock this year had a good time. We would also like to congratulate Penn Jersey Cycles for winning the Four State Biker Build-Off and also everyone who competed in this year’s build-off. Any of these four bikes would have won a first place in any other show. But this biker build-off there could only be one winner. So, the Pennsylvania franchise gets the bragging rights this year.

It’s all in good fun and all the participants were good sports. Being that each builder was from a different state, they got a chance to spend the weekend together talking about motorcycles and getting to know each other. There have also been questions asked about Wildwood’s Roar to the Shore... I was asked several times this weekend if Roar to the Shore would not be held since Wildwood Harley is going to close.

First things first there was a Roar to the Shore Event long before there was a Wildwood Harley-Davidson and, sorry to say, there will be one long after Wildwood Harley is gone. There is talk that the owners of Wildwood Harley-Davidson are going t o keep it open as an after-market motorcycle shop doing parts, service Harley rentals, and will, I’m sure, still have an open house during the rally this year. I’ve heard the rumors flying around and they get worse as time goes on.Do your self a favor and don’t pay attention to them. Or even worse help them spread. Till next time, Ride Safe

THUNDER BEACHThunder Beach in Panama City Florida and Myrtle Beach South Carolina a tale of two diametrically opposed ral-lies. I have attended the Myrtle Beach rally both in the spring and fall for over a decade. This WAS, bar none, my favorite rally of them all. It was friendly, ingratiat-ing, the vending fees were fair, the weather was always great and there was minimal police presence.

Other than the weather, all those things no longer exist. I did not attend this spring rally because my vender fee was $1300 and vendor areas, such as Broadway at the beach and Iron Gate, no longer exist. The City of Myrtle Beach had checkpoints all over the place and it was very apparent we, bikers, were no

longer welcome. I know I speak for many customers and vendors in saying we will never be back and that includes to play golf.

There are many other rallies that appreciate you, us, spending our hard earned money. One such rally is the Thunder Beach Rally in Panama City Beach Florida. This was the first year we formally attended and set up in Frank Brown Park. Joe Biggs and his staff did a great job with the vending area and accommodated over 75 vendors without a glitch. We visited numerous other vending areas while we filmed for “Two Wheel Thunder” a sense of gratitude that permeated the entire event.

We were fortunate to be judges for the Miss Panama Beach contest and had a great time. However a tip to Bikini Models in a contest: The answer to the question: “What do you want to achieve in life”? Isn’t “A family, a college degree and a house with a white picket fence”. It’s “I wanna be a rock star and do a shot of Jaegermeis-ter with all of you right now…” Just A LITTLE TIP FROM A JUDGES PERSPECTIVE, R.I.P. MYRTLE BEACH, see you in Panama City this fall.

BLACK LABEL CHOPPERSOPEN HOUSE

On May 1st, Black Label Choppers of Dover, New Jersey held their first ever open house.

Since Joe and Kurt opened their shop some years back they have talked about throwing a huge first class second to none open house but these guys aren’t the type to do something middle of the road. If their gonna do it, it’s gonna be done right and over the years, as luck would have it, their schedule and conflicts with other events just put an open house on the back burner. As a lot of you already know, Black Label Choppers has taken on a lot of the staff from Legends Harley when they closed up a couple of months back and now, with a staff that has the experiance to put together a lot of events of this size, it was time to have a a party.

The weather was great that day. There was plen-ty of good food and drink, and everyone seemed to be enjoying the day. The band kept everyone entertained all afternoon.

Black Label Choppers is located on 229 E. Blackwell Street in Dover NJ. If you’re a former Legends Harley customer, you’re sure to find a familier face bringing your bike in for service.

I JUST BUMPED IT. HONEST!!!I got a bike in a couple of weeks ago, that i have worked on before. nice, clean looking IRON HORSE. The owner, said a family member bumped his bike with a car (a big car) while the bike was parked in the garage. At first look, it seemed it was only the sidestand bent when it was BUMPED. The bike did not fall over, it must have been pushed back, or to the primary side, enough to bend the stand. Not a problem, stands are cheap and easy to replace. Looking again, you could see where the bike was hit, the right side lower leg had a good scratch in it, thru the chrome, down to the alumi-num.

I know this bike and it was per-fect prior to this happening but, I did notice one thing that was not going to be an easy task. With the bars all the way to the left, they almost hit the gas tank. Good thing they didn’t, ‘cause the paint on the tank would set you back a bunch of bucks to get it matched... But looking further, with the bars the other way, there was the usual clearance. Hence the problem. The bike has inter-nal fork stops, which means the whole front end has to come off to replace the lower bearing cup. Maybe the slotted stop on the

lower tree will be okay, but if not, we will replace it also.

Gotta take the tubes off anyway, but we will slide the lower leg that is scratched off the tube first, it is easier on the bike. This is a PRO-ONE front end we put on, at the same time, we put the custom climax controls handle-bars on. So after the leg is off, we have to un-plug all the elec-tric connections to the bars and the lights, so we can take them off to get at the trees. Not a bad job, being we wired this thing to come apart, if needed, with plugs, so it is not too bad a deal. One problem is that the hydraulic clutch and front brake lines are inside the bar and, when you break a line to fix stuff and you have to bleed it again, it’s work. So I opted to cover the gas tank with a couple of moving blankets, taped them in place, and set the bars on the tank, out of the way, and in tact. It’ll save me a lot of work later.

With all that done, now there is room to pop the lower bearing cup out of the frame. What hap-pened when it was bumped was the finger that sticks down into the matching slot in the lower tree was brokem off from the im-

Page 43: Fast Lane Biker NJ - June Issue

www.fastlanebiker.com41

pact, just at the corner, enough to let the bars come dangerously close to smackin the gas tank. Moving on with the program, we take the new cup out of the box, take a look, and see the dowel pin on the backside of the cup that fits into a hole in the frame. Cool. So, we pop the other old cup out, and suprise, suprise... This was installed at the factory and it does not have a dowel pin to secure it. Here we go... It has four small roll pins going thru holes drilled into it and into the frame under the cup to keep it secure. Shit... This is not good. To make a long story short, I gotta make a hole in the frame, upside down, for the new cup to fit .

Well, after I calmed down a bit, I made some measurements of the pin location on the cup then transferred them to the frame and made a mark. Then I started with a small drill bit and carefully drilled the first hole in the frame. This ain’t easy working upside down. Then bit by bit, got the hole out to the size it should be to hold the cup firmly. Anyone that has to do this knows what I mean, it really sucks and, of course, the new cup doesn’t have a race in it, so I press a race in the cup, throw the cup in the freezer for a half hour or so which will shrink the stainless enough for it to press in easy and not distort the cup. Being I’m at the fridge, gonna take a break, and look at the slot stop on the lower tree.

Well, the thing looks like new but, just in case, I’m puttin’ the new one on. Its only four small screws and pulling the bearing off, only a 10 minute deal. Use some red on the screws, pop the bearing on an that’s that. With the cup installation tool and a cold piece of metal, the lower cup slides in place with little trouble. Done deal!!!!!! Don’t think I have to go through the whole assembly thing with ya, done that a bunch of times here. So we put the whole front end together except for the right side lower leg, which is at the chromers, and that’s it for now. By the way, this was an insurance claim and, even though it does not sound like much, this was around $1500 bucks when all is done.

So, next time you ‘bump’ a bike with a car or another bike, be careful because you may cause more damage than you think. Like this deal, the guy in the cage said he just bumped it and didn`t hurt it at all. That’s because stupid... It ain’t always what you can see that’s screwed up!

Some people are really stupid... I’m done.

See ya........ j.p.fager

The Fast Lane:

John’s Juicy Grilled Hamburgers : Submitted by: John Barry, NY.

Ingredients: 1 lb. lean ground beef3 tbsp. chopped onions3 tbsp. catsup1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce1 tsp. salt1/4 tsp. pepperDash of Tabasco sauce

Directions: Mix all ingredients together well and place covered mixture in the refrigerator for several hour to marinate, before grilling. Form hamburger pat-ties in a dish with vertical sides to eliminate a thin dried edge when cooked.

Grilled Beer Hamburgers : Submitted by: Wayne Evertt, NJ.

Ingredients:Patties:2 pounds ground beef (1/4 lb. Per burger) Worcestershire sauce (a tsp. or two per patty) Seasoning salt (Lowry’s is very good) Directions: Shape fresh or completely thawed meat into patty shapes. Press down in the middle with your thumbs to thin them a bit in the center, as burgers shrink a bit and plump up in the middle. Splash on the Worcestershire sauce and seasoning salt. A little pepper is also tasty, though some people like pep-per and some do not. The Beer Sauce:1/2 can beer (your favorite) 3 tbsp. steak sauce (the thick type like Heinz) 1 tbsp. sugar 1/3 cup ketchup 1 tbsp. mustard 1/2 tsp seasoning salt (same as used in the meat)

Directions: Stir all the sauce ingredients up in a sauce pan and then heat on low until you have a nice blend that is thickened and looks like slathering sauce.

Pineapple Juice Hamburger Marinade : Submitted by: Alex Vetri, Pa.

Ingredients:Juice from 1 can of pineapple rings 1/2 cup Italian dressing (zesty is best) 1 T honey 1 tsp cinnamon dash of seasoning salt and pepper (not a lot)

Directions: Mix all ingredients and pour over raw burgers. Let the hamburgers sit an hour or more or even overnight in the refrigerator. Cover the burgers while marinating to hold in the moisture and tastes (and to keep the bugs out). Also, put the pineapple rings in a zip lock bag or Tupperware container, so the rings do not dry out. Grill the burgers as you would normally grill. Pop the pineapple rings on the grill right before the burgers come off. They only need to cook a few minutes. You want grill marks. When the pineapple rings have marks, they are hot and ready to top on the hamburgers.

Grilled Tex-Mex HamburgersSubmitted by: Tom Bernacki, PA.

Ingredients:2 pounds ground beef 4 tbsp. finely chopped onion 1 tbsp. cilantro (fresh is best) 8 tbsp. salsa (favorite brand or homemade) 1 tbsp. hot sauce (any hot sauce is fine – go with a family favorite) 8 slices Pepper Jack cheese (or shredded Mexican mixed cheese) 8 buns Toppings (salsa and other favorites)

Directions: Mix the ground beef, onion, cilantro, salsa and hot sauce. It’s easi-est to do the mixing by hand. Shape 8 burgers of equal size. Press the center down a bit, so the burgers do not puff up too much in the center. Heat grill to medium and put burgers on. Cook until the grease runs clear – or until de-sired doneness. Right before the burgers are done, place slices of Pepper Jack cheese on top of each burger or sprinkle on some Mexican mixed cheese. It only takes a few seconds for the cheese to melt. Serve on buns with salsa and other toppings. For those who love hot food, have some hot sauce to splash on the burgers too. While you’re heating up the grill, put some nacho chips on the grill. Those are delicious and take only seconds to heat up. Everyone enjoys munching on the chips while the burgers are cooking.
