• Vessel Efficiency Competition - The Technology Strategy Board, partnered by MOD Science and Technology (DSTL), is expected to open a Collaborative R&D competition in January 2013.

• £8million Funding expected covering up to 50% of eligible project costs• This competition, also expected to be backed by Scottish Enterprise,

supports the UK Marine Industries Alliance Growth Strategy and priorities identified in the Marine Industries Roadmap.

• Business-led for organisations of all sizes, inc academia and research institutions. Two or more UK partners, at least one from industry.

• Scope expected to cover most aspects of improving efficiency of ships, boats, submarines, equipment and systems, including support vessels for offshore renewable energy, in naval, commercial, leisure sectors…….

Examples of Technologies and Innovations expected within the scope:•Light weighting

• Lightweight, lower carbon materials and structural optimisation•Smart materials

• Smart and multifunctional, self healing, fire resistant, low friction coatings, embedded sensors

•Positioning and communications• Space and satellite systems, better user interfaces for complex systems

•Autonomous sensing, avionics and advanced navigation• Autonomous systems, remote command and control, trim and stability controls for energy

efficiency and safety •Smart green propulsion and alternative low carbon / emission systems

• Electric propulsion, motors, drives, controllers, energy storage, power management, batteries, engine exhaust after treatment & emissions reduction, heat & power recovery, and alternative fuels

•Vessel design and engineering• Hydrodynamics, improved efficiency of manufacturing processes to reduce material

consumption, waste, energy use and carbon emissions

Application Process

• Competition opens – register and submit initial Expression of Interest outlining project

• Option - feedback on draft EOI before deadline• EOI includes gateway question = Pass/Fail• Review panel decides whether to invite full bid• Process repeated during full stage period,

register and attend compulsory briefing day• Assessment stage• Project initiation must start within 6 months

TSB Funding Allocation

TSB funding covers research and development which is business-led. Principal objective is to stimulate innovation activity, encouraging businesses to work with other commercial and research organisations to develop innovative products, processes and services with future commercial potential.

To support this business focus, the TSB aims to optimise the level of funding business receives whilst recognising the importance of the contribution of research organisations to R&D projects. Therefore, the levels of participation have recently changed and are as follows:•at least 70% of the total eligible project costs are incurred by commercial organisations; and,•a maximum of 30% of total eligible project cost is available to research participants. Where there is more than one research participant, this maximum will be shared between them.

Value and Duration of Projects

• Aim to support industrial research with 50% funding of eligible costs

• Overall projects value £16million• SME & Micro business = 60% eligible costs• Large business = 50% eligible costs• Academic and research institutions = 30%• Fast track 6-12 months 10% total budget• Two stage 12-36 months (typical projects to be

valued from £200k-500k to £3m)

Other considerations• Funding expected to encourage marine supply chains

and an element of transfer between other transport sector propulsion system and ICT architectures

• Funding expected to encourage civil to defence innovation and vice versa with many common marine and maritime efficiency themes

• Project size range from small technical feasibility projects to R&D leading towards technology demonstrators or any combination – so flexible

• Projects should offer well defined end user application supported by clear route to market or exploitation plan within 1-3 year time frame

• The Transport KTN is running three free information days to raise awareness and explain how to participate in this funding opportunity:-

Mersey Maritime, Liverpool - 22 NovemberBIS, London - 27 NovemberGlasgow, Grand Central Hotel - 5 December

• These are for anyone interested in developing a greater understanding of the scope and rules of the competition, and finding collaborative partners.

• To stay up to date with news of the Competition and book a place at one of these events join the Transport KTN’s Vessel Efficiency sub group at:
