SALES UPDATE

FASIG-TIPTON OCTOBER STARTS POSITIVEBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

Topped by a Curlin colt making his second for-ay through the sales ring this year, Fasig-Tip-

ton Kentucky's October yearling sale got off on a positive note Oct. 24, with a slight uptick in average price and an improved buy-back rate.

With competitive bidding from a deep buying bench on another splendid fall day in the Bluegrass, Fasig-Tipton reported 246 head sold for gross receipts of $8,306,400 compared with Day 1 a year ago when 204 were sold for $6,694,300.

The average price of $33,766 was up 2.9% over the $32,815 during the first of four sessions a year ago. This year's sale has been trimmed to three days.

The Oct. 24 median price of $12,750 was down slightly from the $15,000 median in 2015 and the 95 horses that did not sell represented an RNA rate of 27.9%. Last year's opening session buy-back rate was 35% as 110 of the 314 through the ring went unsold.

"It was a solid start to the sale," said Fasig-Tipton president and CEO Boyd Browning Jr. "I thought overall it was a very positive day. There was significant competition for what were perceived to be the better offerings."

Unlike the experience at so many of the previous yearling sales this year, there was more trade at the lower price ranges Monday.

"Probably the most encouraging sign was there was bidding and activity at the lower level," Browning said. "Even at the less-than-$10,000 range there was commerce that was conducted today that was more encouraging than we’ve seen in the last few years."

Browning said the lower-tiered trades was a key factor in the improvement in the RNA rate but probably brought the average and median prices down a bit.

"At the end of the day we are here to get as many horses sold as we can and it was a very fair marketplace throughout the day," Browning said.

As the final sale of the yearling auction season, the October sale has grown in stature over the last seven or eight years, with some agents and end-users targeting it and more consignors pointing specific horses at October, Browning said.

The session-topper, at $350,000, had gone unsold at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale on a final bid of $275,000 but was brought back to the October sale by his consignors Tom VanMeter and Olin Gentry.

Purchased by Florida pinhookers Joe Minor and Justin Casse, the colt will be pointed toward a 2-year-old in-training sale next year through Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables operation.

Minor, who operates JSM Equine, said he had seen the colt at Saratoga but did not bid on him then.

"We liked him there and liked him better today," Minor said. "I think he's a stunning horse who looks the part. I think he will make a great 2-year-old."(continued on page 4)

SALES UPDATE

VanMeter said the colt had some minor issues when he was at Saratoga, but they were taken care of before Monday’s sale and that the final price was well above the reserve.

"We were always hopeful he would sell well and he did," VanMeter said.

The colt was produced from Party Chatter, a 19-year-old daughter of Pleasant Colony who is a full sister to stakes winners Colonial U. S., Silver Fox, and Pleasant Feeling.

Sharing co-second-highest price of $300,000 were a Malibu Moon filly bought by Rick Porter’s Fox Hill Farm and a Medaglia d'Oro colt acquired by Alex and Jo Ann Lieblong.

Consigned as Hip 144 by Brookdale Sales, the Malibu Moon filly was bred in Kentucky by Godolphin was produced from the grade I-winning Unbridled's Song mare Magnificent Song.

Victoria Keith signed the sales receipt on behalf of Fox Hill's agent Tom McGreevy, who selected the filly. Trainer Larry Jones also signed off on the purchase after he saw her.

"She is an excellent physical and has a nice pedigree," said Keith, adding that the purchase price was at "our ceiling."

Keith jokingly noted that Porter was in a buying mood as a result of the success of his champion filly Songbird.

"Rick's feeling pretty good with Songbird, so Rick feels like shopping," Keith said.

Brookdale Sales' Joe Seitz said he was not surprised with the filly's price.

"She was such a gorgeous individual she looked like a sculpture," Seitz said. "She was in a perfect place and she stuck out. We knew she would sell

for significantly higher than the reserve and that was a great price."

The Medaglia d'Oro colt, consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency on behalf of Blue Heaven Farm, is out of the grade I-winning Game Plan mare Mistical Plan.

"He looked the part," said Lieblong, adding that he had seen the races of his half brother, Big Gray Rocket, a promising Tapit colt trained by Bob Baffert.

The sale continues Tuesday, Oct. 25, beginning at 10 a.m. EDT. BH

SALES UPDATE

VANMETER-GENTRY COME LOADED FOR F-T DAY 2By Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

The VanMeter-Gentry consignment of Tom Van-Meter and Olin Gentry came into the Fasig-Tip-

ton October yearling sale ready to fire with both barrels. Among their offerings is a More Than Ready colt that found itself on the short list of most buyers for the Oct. 25 second session of the sale in Lexington.

Consigned as Hip 428, the colt bred in Kentucky by Olin Gentry and Gaines-Gentry Stallion Holdings was bought back on a final bid of $325,000 from this year's Keeneland September yearling sale. The colt is a half brother to the stakes-placed Tiznow colt Tiznow R J and descends from the extended female family of champion Miesque and the late leading sire Kingmambo.

"I told (Fasig-Tipton president and CEO) Boyd Browning I was bringing bazookas to a knife fight,"

VanMeter said half-heartedly of his consignment, which also included a Curlin colt offered during the first session, who topped the first session of the sale at $350,000.

Also on the Tuesday horses to watch list is a Tapizar colt with a recent major catalog update. Consigned as Hip 489 by St George Sales, the colt is a half brother to stakes winner Victress, who recently added a grade III placing to her resume when second in the Ballerina Stakes at Canada's Hastings Park, and to grade II-placed Majestic Presence.

Others to watch for Oct. 25 include: • Hip 617, a New York-bred filly by the state's leading sire Freud, consigned by Denali Stud • Hip 576, an Uncle Mo filly who is half sister to Canadian stakes winner Smuggler's Hold (Stroll), from Paramount Sales, agent • Hip 593, a Baccari Bloodstock-consigned filly by Bodemeister out of a stakes-winning daughter of Malibu Moon from the family of grade I winner Track Barron. CINCO CHARLIE TO SPENDTHRIFT FARMBy BloodHorse Staff

Cinco Charlie, a graded stakes-winning juvenile in 2014 by Indian Charlie, has been retired from rac-

ing and will enter stud at B. Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky.

"Cinco Charlie is a fast, precocious, and great-looking son of Indian Charlie," Spendthrift general manager Ned Toffey said. "We've seen the success of Uncle Mo, and we are very high on Liaison and the offspring we're seeing from him. It's a sire line with a lot of upside, and Cinco Charlie has won more stakes races than any Indian Charlie at stud."

Cinco Charlie will stand for $5,000 and will be offered as part of Spendthrift's Share The Upside program.

Campaigned by owners Bill and Corrine Heiligbrodt and trainer Steve Asmussen, Cinco Charlie was a leading 2-year-old of his crop, capturing his debut at Churchill Downs before winning the Bashford Manor Stakes (gr. III) in his second start. He went on to win four stakes races at four different racetracks as a juvenile.

Cinco Charlie carried that momentum into his 3-year-old season by stretching out to an 8 1/2-length victory in the one-mile Riley Allison Stakes at Sunland Park. He returned to Churchill to prove best in the William Walker Stakes over multiple grade II winner Blofeld, and then was nailed at the wire to finish runner-up in a top field

of sophomore sprinters in the Woody Stephens Stakes (gr. II) at Belmont Park.

This year at 4, Cinco Charlie won the six-furlong Duncan Kenner Stakes at Fair Grounds. He retires with earnings of $608,920 from eight wins in 18 starts.

He hails from the stakes-placed Marquetry mare Ten Halos, a half sister to graded stakes winners My Pal Charlie, Bwana Charlie, and Bwana Bull.

Indian Charlie sired 81 stakes winners, including seven grade I winners. He stood at Airdrie Stud before passing away in 2011. BH

ARCI DEVELOPS ONLINE INDUSTRY SURVEYBy BloodHorse Staff

The Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) has crafted an online

survey to solicit input from the industry's var-ied stakeholders. The goal is to find consen-sus, allowing the industry to take constructive measures.

"Because there are literally thousands of owners, hundreds of tracks, and countless participants, there has been no consensus as to what our biggest problems and challenges are and how to address them," ARCI president Ed Martin said.

To that end, the ARCI Oct. 26 at Los Alamitos Race Course will conduct the last of 28 focus groups at tracks across the country, with participants including horse owners, trainers, jockeys, fans, veterinarians, track management, breeders, racing officials, and regulators.

The online survey is designed to augment the focus groups.

"The questions are deliberately designed to probe where people are at on ideas currently being proposed,

as well as giving respondents the opportunity to tell us what they think the major changes should be," Martin said. "The more responses the better.

"The racing industry is currently divided, and those divisions are generating negative publicity and ill will. Unless we get everyone on a common path, these divisions will continue to the detriment of the sport. Nobody can solve all of racing's problems overnight, but we are going to try to get people on a path that will result in positive change." BH

E Z'S GENTLEMAN TO OHIOBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Grade I winner E Z's Gentleman is being relocated from Kentucky to Ohio with the intent of taking

advantage of the growing, casino-fueled Ohio-bred program.

The second-crop son of Yankee Gentleman will be the first stallion to stand at Daryl Duncan's developing Thoroughbred breeding farm near Warsaw, Ohio.

"We had one of the largest producing dairy herds in the country," said Duncan about his family-owned and operated farm. "The children are not so interested in the dairy business, and I've always had a fascination with the Thoroughbreds; since I saw Secretariat at Claiborne Farm when I was 9. We decided to take advantage of the Ohio-bred program, which really seems to be growing."

Duncan Farm, a 200-acre operation, has been transitioning to Thoroughbreds over the past year and half and is now home to 12 broodmares. One of them is the Touch Gold daughter Smart Touch, the dam of Kentucky Downs Juvenile Stakes winner All Right and potential contender for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IT).

E Z's Gentleman has stood the last three breeding seasons at owner John O'Meara's Milestone Farm. As a racehorse, E Z's Gentleman won the 2010 Triple Bend Handicap (gr. I) and placed in two other grade I stakes—the Bing Crosby Stakes and the Ancient Title Stakes.

He'll stand for $2,500 at Duncan Farm next year. BHs Share this story

MANDURO PROGENY GET STAKES DOUBLEBy Clive Webb-Carter

While Europe's world class sires dominate the majority of Europe's leading stakes races, it was

Darley's Manduro who enjoyed a group race double last weekend.

Headed by Manduro's recent season's flag bearer, the Aga Khan's Vazirabad won his second consecutive Prix Royal Oak (Fr-I) Oct. 23 at Saint-Cloud.

Vazirabad is now the winner of seven group races, which includes a victory in the Dubai Gold Cup Sponsored by Al Tayer Motors (UAE-II), a race he will be aimed at again next March, and the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier (Fr-II) this season.

Manduro's second weekend stakes winner came the previous day when Duretto became his newest stakes winner, staying on strongly to land Worthington's Ocsl Stakes (Eng-III) at Newbury.

A son of Monsun, Manduro offers a good out-cross to the dominant Northern Dancer sire-lines in Europe, and has had 14 stakes performers this year, which also includes listed winners Techno Queen, Wanderina, Plein Air, and Red Stars.

The German-bred Manduro, who has stood at Haras du Logis in France since 2013, is a three-time group I winner, which includes a Prince Of Wales's Stakes (Eng-I) win, and was crowned 2007 champion older horse.

Since retiring to stud for the 2008 season, Manduro has sired 27 stakes winners which consists of six group I winners. BH

Gilltown Stud has not set a fee for Harzand for 2017.

After finishing runner-up in three of her six starts, Fastinating Allie hit the wire first in a six-furlong maid-

en special weight at Zia Park Oct. 24 for New Mexico-bred juvenile fillies to become the first winner for her sire Monterey Jazz.

In the $25,500 event, Fastinating Allie stalked the early pace before heading inside through the turn and breaking clear at the three-sixteenths pole to drive home and win by 2 1/4 lengths.

Out of Sandia's Flicka, by Sandia Slew, Fastinating Allie was bred by Gary Thompson and is trained by Todd W. Finscher for owner Joe Dee Brooks.

A graded stakes winner on two surfaces, Monterey Jazz finished his racing career with a record of 9-2-7 from 37 starts and earnings of $760,841.

Trained by Brian Lynch and ridden by Julien Leparoux, the 2-1 favorite deftly handled a field of 11 other sophomore fillies, weaving her way from eighth in the early stages to catch the early leaders and win going handily in 1:22.68 on the fast track.

Longshot Malibu Stacy finished second with Coniah third and Curlin's Approval fourth.

Having raced only at 3, Lightstream has four wins—all at seven furlongs—from six starts. Her other two races were a second-place finish in the seven-furlong Test Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga and a third in Belmont's 8 1/2-furlong Mother Goose Stakes (gr. I).

Up Hill purchased Lightstream out of the 2014 Keeneland September yearling sale for a bargain $55,000. The bay daughter of Harlan's Holiday has amply repaid that confidence with $457,000 in earnings.

Noreen O'Neill's Ann Marie Farm bred Lightstream in Kentucky out of the homebred stakes-winning Arch mare North Beach, who earned black type in the Miss America Stakes at Golden Gate Fields.

Inbred 3x3 to English classic winner and U.S. leading sire Roberto, North Beach is a half sister to grade III winner Kilgowan (Smoke Glacken), who won the 2004 El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) for O'Neill and her late husband Terence, and to stakes winner Rivoltella (Broken Vow).

Bred by Brereton Jones, second dam Port Roberto is a Dynaformer (Roberto) half sister to multiple stakes winner Port of Silver, by Jones' Roberto stallion Silver Hawk from the mare Portuguese, whom he purchased in foal to Hawaii for $155,000 at the 1984 Keeneland

November breeding stock sale. Portuguese's half sister Island Charm (by Hawaii) had been a multiple grade III winner in the early 1980s.

Irish-born Terence O'Neill acquired second dam Port Roberto after her racing career. In a roundabout manner it was a matter of the luck of one Irishman smiling on another, for Port Roberto's third dam Noble Touch (Crafty Admiral) was produced from the sterling broodmare program of Reginald N. Webster, who like O'Neill was born in Ireland.

In 1949 Webster fortuitously claimed the Count Fleet mare Quick Touch from the Greentree Stable of the Whitney family for $5,000 at Jamaica. Her dam Alms, winner of the Pimlico Oaks, was a half sister to Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Twenty Grand.

Claimed more for her genes than for her racing ability, Quick Touch proved of great value. In addition to Noble Touch, she produced four stakes winners: Sorceress; Capelet, dam of leading sire Traffic; Quill, the champion 2-year-old filly of 1958; and Count Amber, the sire of 1966 Webster's Belmont Stakes winner Amberoid.

Harlan's Holiday, who died at age 14 in Argentina where he shuttled, is the sire of 87 stakes winners, 11 this year. His final crop are 2-year-olds of 2016. BH
