  • Before the First World War men wore dark suits, they had short hair and moustaches. Women worse long dresses and they had long hair. Under their dresses they wore stiff corsets which gave them very narrow waists but they were very uncomfortable. In the Twenties dresses and hair became much shorter. Corsets disappeared. For men, trousers with very wide legs called Oxford bags became fashionable.

  • In the 1930s and 1940s hair, dresses and coats became longer again. Men wore a suit, a tie and usually a hat, too. In the 1950s women wore jumpers and blouses with wide skirts and short socks. For men this was the age of the Teddy boys. These wore long jackets in bright coulours and tight trousers called drainpipes. Both men and women wore winklepicker shoes with pointed toes. The womens shoes hag high stiletto heels.

  • The 1960s saw a revolution in clothes. This was the time of the mini-skirt and long boots. Men had long hair- the famous Beatle haircut. The 1970s women wore loose maxi-dresses. Men wore jeans and T-shirts. Everything was very colourful. Very long hair was fashionable and beards became more common. The 1980s brought teenagers with punk hairstyles in red, blue, purple and green, and brightly coloured make-up.

  • The early 1990s saw a continuation of late 1980s fashion: women wore denim button down shirts, leggings, drainpipe jeans, colored tights, bike shorts, skater dresses. Popular accessories includedcourt shoes, cowboy boots, headscarves, leggings, slouch socks, ballet flatsand penny loafersandboat shoes.

  • In2000s the fashion was profoundly influenced by technology. From late 1999 until late 2001, there was a futuristic approach to fashion, with metallics, shiny blacks, straps, and buckles becoming commonplace. The apparel was made to be as dark, reflective, technological, and as sexy as possible.

  • Fashion has always been key to how people have presented themselves to the world, and how society has wanted to present people to the world. The fashion of the time tells our history in great detail.
