Fashion Marketing and Event Planning Activity This activity involves working with a small group to plan an event for your classmates or for some peers. There are three options. You and your group must choose one. There is a list of tasks underneath each choice that must be completed. Consultation with the teacher is necessary during the organizing stages. Arrange a Field Trip 1. Consider the local clothing retailers in our town. Determine which one could provide a good

experience for your classmates to learn about fashion marketing. Suggestions are available from the teacher.

2. Contact the retailer. Determine if he/she would like to host our class and do a short talk. 3. Consult with the teacher and the retailer to choose a convenient date for our class to walk to

the store. Ensure the time you pick is during a class period BEFORE lunch. 4. Discuss with the retailer the information you want our class to get out of the visit. Topics to

suggest to the retailer could include:

• how he/she lays out the store

• where sale items get located

• how he/she creates window designs

• how he/she advertises the store

• how he/she gets fashions to sell

• when he/she does ordering of fashions

• training, education, or skills needed to do his/her job

• other topics you think might be of interest to the class about his/her career 5. Put the date of the visit on the class calendar. 6. Ensure the teacher prepares permission forms for students to go on the outing. 7. Distribute the permission forms for the outing at least two weeks in advance of the visit date. 8. Collect all permission forms for the outing at least one week in advance of the visit date. 9. Call the retailer two to three days in advance to remind him/her of our class visit. 10. Prepare five interesting questions to ask the retailer about his/her experience in the fashion

industry. 11. Introduce the retailer to the class and the teacher. 12. Ask questions during the visit. 13. Thank the retailer at the end of the visit, and initiate applause from the class. 14. Write a follow-up thank you note to the retailer on a JDSS card (the teacher will supply the

card). Do a rough draft of your thank you note to show the teacher in advance of writing your message in the card.

15. Address the envelope for the thank you card, and give the card to the teacher for mailing.

Arrange for a Guest Speaker 1. Consider our region’s clothing retailers and other fashion-related businesses (hair, esthetics,

shoes, etc.). Determine which one could provide a good experience for our class to learn about fashion marketing. Suggestions are available from the teacher.

2. Contact the retailer. Determine if he/she would like to visit our class and do a short talk. 3. Consult with the teacher and the retailer to choose a convenient date for the retailer to come

to our school. 4. Discuss with the retailer the information you want your classmates to get out of his/her visit.

Topics to suggest to the retailer could include:

• how he/she lays out the store

• where sale items get located

• how he/she creates window designs

• how he/she advertises the store

• how he/she gets fashions to sell

• when he/she does ordering of fashions

• training, education, or skills needed to do his/her job

• other topics you think might be of interest to the class about his/her career

• If your guest speaker comes from a fashion-related business (e.g. hairdresser), you will need to revise the topics. See the teacher for help.

5. Put the date of the guest speaker’s visit on the class calendar. 6. Call the guest speaker one week in advance to remind him/her of our class visit, and to go

over any questions the speaker might have. 7. Call the guest speaker again the day before the visit to confirm his/her attendance. 8. Prepare five interesting questions to ask the retailer about his/her experience in the fashion

industry. 9. Meet the guest speaker at the front of the school and escort him/her to the main office to sign

in. Bring the guest speaker to our class. 10. Introduce the retailer to the class and the teacher and provide brief background information

about him/her. 11. Ask questions during the speaker’s talk. 12. Thank the speaker at the end of the visit, and initiate applause from the class. 13. Write a follow-up thank you note to the retailer on a JDSS card (the teacher will supply the

card). Do a rough draft of your thank you note to show the teacher in advance of writing your message in the card.

14. Address the envelope for the thank you card, and give the card to the teacher for mailing.

Plan a Lunchtime Fashion Show 1. Research online how to run a fashion show. 2. Decide on a theme for your fashion show. 3. Decide on a date for your fashion show and put the date on the class calendar. 4. Determine how many outfits you will feature in your fashion show. 5. Determine who will wear the outfits. 6. Ensure each outfit has appropriate accessories. 7. Determine in what order the outfits will be featured. 8. Determine what music will play during your fashion show, and who will run the music. 9. Produce a programme for your fashion show that describes each model’s outfit and

accessories. Your programme must be submitted to the teacher one week in advance of your fashion show for proofreading.

10. Print enough copies of your programme – in colour – to give to each audience member. Talk with the teacher about how many people you think will attend.

11. Decide how you will layout the classroom for the fashion show, and where the audience will sit. Discuss this with the teacher.

12. Determine the path the models will walk and have them practise their walks and poses in advance. Will each model take his/her own trip on the “runway”? Or will you have the models grouped together in twos or threes, with a collection of outfits being featured?

13. Alternatively, you could negotiate with the drama teacher(s) about using the amphitheatre for a lunchtime fashion show.

14. Promote the event in advance by doing morning announcements and posting flyers around the school. Show any/all promotional flyers to the teacher in advance of posting them. All promotions must mention that guests must pay $2 each to attend. (The money is a fundraiser for supplies for our class.)

15. Set up the classroom in advance of the fashion show. 16. Sell admission at the door ($2 each). 17. After guests have assembled, welcome everyone to the fashion show. 18. Manage the running of the fashion show. 19. After the last outfit has been featured, thank guests for coming to the fashion show and

supporting the fashion program. 20. Clean up the classroom afterwards, and take down any promotional flyers that were hung

around the school.
