Fashion Design Fashion design is an exciting, fast-paced field in which some of Americas most intelligent artists are working. This class is hands-on and project-based. In the past, girls have created mood boards based on a specific target market then displayed their designs with hand-drawn fashion illustrations. The girls have also learned the basics of machine quilting and created one-of-a-kind pillows. The Fashion Design course gives girls a working knowledge of the four stages of the design process including: 1. Basic tools (sketching and sewing skills) 2. Inspiration (concept boards and assimilating different types of sources to develop a concept for a garment) 3. Creation (intro to flat pattern making) 4. Production (creating a garment from pattern to finish). Our energetic instructor teaches campers how to source their own personal inspiration, with the end result of planning their own clothing line and designing a garment or accessory. On their academic field trip, campers have the chance to ask professionals who give them an insiders view of fashion design and business. In the past, class field trips have included a styling challenge with a personal stylist from Nordstrom, seeing the workspace for costumes at the Washington National Opera, a look for lesschallenge, a visit to the First Ladies exhibit at the American History Museum, and visited the Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens where they participated in a designed hat workshop. All supplies are provided.

Fashion Design

Fashion design is an exciting, fast-paced field in which some of America’s most intelligent

artists are working. This class is hands-on and project-based. In the past, girls have created mood

boards based on a specific target market then displayed their designs with hand-drawn fashion

illustrations. The girls have also learned the basics of machine quilting and created one-of-a-kind

pillows.

The Fashion Design course gives girls a working knowledge of the four stages of the design

process including:

1. Basic tools (sketching and sewing skills)

2. Inspiration (concept boards and assimilating different types of sources to develop a

concept for a garment)

3. Creation (intro to flat pattern making)

4. Production (creating a garment from pattern to finish).

Our energetic instructor teaches campers how to source their own personal inspiration, with the

end result of planning their own clothing line and designing a garment or accessory. On their

academic field trip, campers have the chance to ask professionals who give them an insider’s

view of fashion design and business. In the past, class field trips have included a styling

challenge with a personal stylist from Nordstrom, seeing the workspace for costumes at the

Washington National Opera, a “look for less” challenge, a visit to the First Ladies exhibit at the

American History Museum, and visited the Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens where they

participated in a designed hat workshop.

All supplies are provided.
