LETTER FROM THE CHIEF

Dear Collectors,

Welcome to this edition of Fascination. In this edition, we have some exciting news to share with you! United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) has achieved a Guinness book of World Records for its Universal Declaration of Human Rights sheet, which was issued on 27 October 2017, for the most words on a postage stamp: 1,969. UNPA is very proud of this accomplishment.

For the remainder of 2018, UNPA has a full programme scheduled.

In August, UNPA continued its very popular World Heritage series, focusing on six sites in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. UNPA also issued three beautifully designed prestige booklets that tell all about these incredible places.

In October, UNPA will issue three mini-sheets of stamps to commemorate International Music Day. The stamps illustrate the musical instruments of brass and woodwinds, strings and percussion and were designed by Sergio Baradat of graphic design team of UNPA.

UNPA will also issue three definitive stamps in October that feature the famous sculpture at United Nations Headquarters, Non-Violence.

We also have some interesting special event sheets that are featured in this bulletin. In September, a New York sheet featuring “Thomas and Friends” will be issued as well as a special event mini-sheet for the thirty-fifth Asian International Stamp Exhibition (AISE) in Macau, which was printed using a special laser-cutting technique. In October, a New York sheet to commemorate the festival of Diwali will be issued, and a special event mini-sheet will be released for the Verona Stamp Show in Italy.

The 2018 Annual Collection folders will also be issued, as well as two Vienna revalued pre-stamped postcards.

We hope that you enjoy adding these new stamps and products to your collection.

2018 ANNUAL COLLECTION FOLDERSThe New York, Geneva and Vienna annual collection folders of single stamps issued in 2018 will be released on 1 October 2018. The folders are printed in full colour, and they provide information about each issue in English, French and German. The mint stamps are not affixed inside the albums, as mounts are provided for this purpose. The Geneva and Vienna annual collection folders will also be available with the affixed and respectively cancelled stamps.

It should be noted that the 2018 Flag Series and 2018 Endangered Species series stamps will not be included in the individual New York, Geneva or Vienna annual collection folders. They are contained in their own separate folders.

International Music Day is celebrated on 1 October each year. The day was established in 1975 by the International Music Council (IMC), which was

founded by UNESCO in 1949. Music is essential to many of our lives and is a powerful platform that brings people together across cultures. The

main objectives of the Day are to celebrate the importance of music and musicians worldwide and to promote its value in society by building

peace and understanding through a common language.

UNPA will issue three mini-sheets of twelve stamps to celebrate International Music Day on 1 October 2018. The stamps featuring Brass and

On 2 October 2018, UNPA will issue three definitive stamps featuring images of “The Knotted Gun - Non Violence”. This well-known sculpture

for peace and non-violence, was created in 1980 by the Swedish artist Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd as a tribute to John Lennon. Knotted

Gun sculptures are placed in more than 30 strategic locations worldwide, including the United Nations Headquarters in New York City,

the Olympic Museum in Lausanne and the Peace Park in Beijing.

The knotted gun Non-Violence sculpture is used as a symbol by the Non-Violence Project Foundation, a non-profit organization promoting

peace and social change through education; to inspire, motivate and engage young people to understand how to solve conflicts peacefully.

The artwork for the US$ 0.01 definitive stamp is an engraving by Martin Mörck (Norway). The € 0.90 and € 2.30 definitive stamps are painted

On 12 September 2018, UNPA will issue a special event sheet to

commemorate “All Aboard for Global Goals” featuring Thomas &

Friends™. The United Nations and Mattel, Inc have collaborated to

incorporate a number of the Sustainable Development Goals into the

storylines of the animated children’s television series Thomas & Friends.

The sheet of ten stamps in the denomination of US$ 1.15 features

images of Thomas & Friends™ and includes six of the 17 Sustainable

Development Goals – specifically #4 Quality Education, #5 Gender

Equality, #6 Clean Water and Sanitation, #11 Sustainable Cities and

Communities, #12 Responsible Consumption and Production and #15

commemorate the 131st VERONAFIL stamp show in Italy from 23 to 25

VERONA 2018 — SPECIAL EVENT MINI-SHEET

On 21 September 2018, UNPA will issue a three-stamp special event mini-

sheet to commemorate the Macao 2018 - Thirty-fifth Asian International

Stamp Exhibition in Macau, PR China. The stamp sheet was designed

by Ye Luying (China). The sheet is composed of stamps in the three

denominations (US$ 1.15, CHF 2.00 and € 1.80) and features a special

laser-cutting technique. A quantity of 18,000 sheets were printed by

Cartor Security Printing (France).

The background of the sheet depicts a Chinese story in ancient times

called Hua Mulan, about a girl who joined the army instead of her old

father, dressing as a man to do so. The illustration inspired by the

Cantonese opera of Hua Mulan where the protagonist was depicted

by famous last generation Cantonese opera actresses Madam Lang

Yunyu and Guo Feng. The three stamps feature judge Bao Zheng, general

Guan Yu and Hua Mulan. They are meant to represent justice, loyalty,

righteousness, courage and equality.

MACAO 2018 - THIRTY-FIFTH ASIAN INTERNATIONAL STAMP EXHIBITION, MACAU, PR CHINA SPECIAL EVENT MINI-SHEET

DIWALI — NEW YORK PERSONALIZED STAMP SHEETOn 19 October 2018, UNPA will issue a New York special event sheet to

commemorate the festival of Diwali.

Diwali, also known as Deepawali is the joyous and popular festival of lights,

which is celebrated in India and by followers of many faiths across the world.

During the five-day celebration clay lamps known as diyas are lit to signify

the victory of good over evil. The festival also symbolizes the start of a New

year for many communities.

The sheet in the denomination of US$ 1.15 contains ten stamps and tabs

featuring festive lights and the symbolic lamps known as diyas.

The background of the sheet features the UN Headquarters building

illuminated with the message of “Happy Diwali” to celebrate the spirit of

the festival.

UNPA AT THE 72nd SALON PHILATÉLIQUE D’AUTOMNE IN PARIS

From 8 to 11 November 2018 the United Nations Postal Administration

will be represented at the 72nd Salon Philatélique d’Automne (Autumn

Philatelic Fair) at the “Espace Champerret“ in 75017 Paris, France, where

it will be offering a white card and an exhibition cachet. Opening hours

are Thursday until Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free! The imprint on the white card shows

the Philharmonie de Paris, currently the largest concert hall in Paris

for classical music. The show cachet features a French drummer. Both

designs were created by the Austrian artist Prof. Hannes Margreiter.

30 NOVEMBER AND 1 DECEMBER IN VIENNA: NUMIPHIL 2018

The International Coin and Stamp Fair Numiphil 2018 will take place

on Friday, 30 November from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday,

1 December from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in MGC Messe Wien, 1030 Vienna,

Modecenterstraße 22.

A white card with show cachet (design: Prof. Adolf Tuma) on the

theme of 200 years of the world peace song “Silent Night” will be

available. The imprint on the show card shows wandering shepherds

in the snow. The show cachet depicts the guitar of the composer

Joseph Mohr from the Silent Night Museum in Hallein.

Please note that the 2018 Numiphil show card can only be ordered

with the order form 1/2019 which will be included in the next

philatelic journal Fascination No. 1/2019.

UNPA PARTICIPATION AT VERONAFIL IN ITALY

The 131st Veronafil will take place from 23 to 25 November 2018 at the

Quartiere Fiere di Verona, Padiglioni 9. Opening hours are on Friday

from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on

Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free!

UNPA will be represented with its own sales and information stand,

issue a blue card and offer a special cancellation. The show card

shows the middle loge of the Teatro Filarmonico di Verona. The

opera house is used in the winter for the Verona opera season if the

Arena can not be used. The show cachet also relates to the theme

of “Music”. Both designs were created by the Austrian artist Maria

Schulz.

The Sindelfingen International Stamp Fair will take place from

25 to 27 October 2018 at the Sindelfingen exhibition center, Germany.

UNPA will be represented with its own sales and information stand,

the white card shows the half-timbered Old Town Hall in Maichingen,
