The Importance of Zeitgeist!

• What is Zeitgeist? It’s the spirit of the time! – Pop culture– Economics– Politics– Social movements– War– Global warming, etc.

• These factors will predict the types of prints and fabrics that are being used as well as the color.

To access the Library’s Databases log into your BlackBoard Account & select the Library Tab at the top of the page.

Then click on Research/Explore and select the Database link.

The Databases are organized by subject. Since we know we are looking for the ProQuest Central Database select the “A-Z List”.

Scroll through the list & click on the ProQuest Central link

This is the ProQuest home page.You can perform a basic search for an author, title, publication or keyword.

Let’s do an advanced search to combine multiple terms.

We’ll search for an article that contains the terms skinny jeans and trend somewhere in its title, text, abstract or other fields.

Click “Full Text” to only find complete articles,

not citations.

Utilize the Publication Limiter to view only the

most recent articles.

Click “Search” to perform the search.

We found 65 articles using our search for full text articles from the last 3 months which contain the terms skinny jeans and trend.

Notice each result lists the title, author, publication title, page numbers, and

publication date. It shows where search terms are used in the article, and shows

that the article will be in full text.

Click the title to go to the full article.

Use tools to print, email it to yourself, download or

cite the article.

If you are not finding adequate results with your original search terms, brainstorm synonyms or related terms! Using a

thesaurus can help you come up with more terms.Also the database displays ‘Suggested Subjects’ at the top of

results page.

This time we will search for the terms skinny jeans OR denim and trend in all fields and the text of the article. We will use the same Publication

Date Limiter.

Our results increased from 65 articles to 857 because we have included articles that mention trends AND denim

as well as skinny jeans.

Let’s switch databases and do some research in Plunkett Industry Research

To access the Library’s Databases log into your BlackBoard Account & select the Library Tab at the top of the page.

Then on the left hand side select the Database link.

Scroll down the alphabetical list to Plunkett Research and click to access it.

Browse information by industry type. Choose Apparel, Textiles and

Fashions.

Click Market Research and Trendsto see analyses of major trends.

Go back to the database list on the Library’s page and select WGSN

This is the WSGN homepage. To get started, click on the Menu at the upper left hand corner.

Under the Trend Forecast click on the StyleSight link.

The Forecast page contains info on what is forecast for the next two years. Browse Timelines, Materials, Prints & Graphics, Color Evolution, etc.

The Forecast section is always divided into Women or Men

A new window will open with a report : Forecast > Key Colors > S/S 16.
