Farrier F-32 T HE F-32 comes in several forms, the F-32A, F-32AX, or F-32R and F-32RX, with both aft cabin and aft cockpit versions, and all can be built by home or professional builders. The F-32A is the standard narrower main hull version, the ‘A’ signifying Amateur builder. The F-32AX is a wider, roomier version, the ‘X’ standing for extra room. The F-32R and F-32RX are the racing versions with a taller rig, the ‘R’ standing for Race. The F-32A will have one major advantage over the F-33 - it is probably the largest legally trailerable folding trimaran (without permit) in the world, its trailering beam being as little as 2.5m (8’ 2 1 /2”). The F-32AX version is wider, same as the F-33, its trailering beam being around 2.9m (9’ 6”), which will require a permit to trailer, but this is usually easily obtainable in most areas. The F-32 (like the F-33) has also been specifically designed with an ocean going capability in mind. This is for those intrepid sailors who cannot resist going offshore in what may intended to be a trailerable yacht for bay and coastal sailing, such as my older F-9/F-31 design series. The F-9/F-31 has now made a number of Atlantic and Pacific crossings, and if one can’t stop such sailors from ocean crossing, then one may as well make the boat as safe as possible. Thus the F-32 has all the necessary structural and safety features for extended offshore sailing designed in. the new by IAN FARRIER The F-32 is the home of custom builder’s version of the Australian built F-33 production boat, whose availability has been very limited by a restricted production capability. the F-32A, F-32AX, or F-32R andF-32RX, with both aft cabin and

aft cockpit versions, and all can be builtby home or professional builders.

The F-32A is the standard narrowermain hull version, the ‘A’ signifyingAmateur builder. The F-32AX is a wider, roomier version, the ‘X’ standing forextra room. The F-32R and F-32RX arethe racing versions with a taller rig, the‘R’ standing for Race.

The F-32A will have one majoradvantage over the F-33 - it is probablythe largest legally trailerable foldingtrimaran (without permit) in the world, itstrailering beam being as little as 2.5m (8’ 2 1/2”). The F-32AX version is wider,

same as the F-33, its trailering beambeing around 2.9m (9’ 6”), which willrequire a permit to trailer, but this isusually easily obtainable in most areas.

This is for thoseintrepid sailors who cannot resist goingoffshore in what may intended to be atrailerable yacht for bay and coastalsailing, such as my older F-9/F-31 designseries. In regards to performance, F-33 hasalready established an excellent racerecord, having taken line honors in ClassA multihulls in the 2004 ‘Round theIsland’ race in the UK, and winning onhandicap. Some 1682 boats took part inthis years event, including 50 multihulls, the race being run around the Isle ofWight. The winning F-33R took fourthover the line, finishing behind Grand PrixClass multihulls such as Bruno Peryon’smaxi 120ft Cat Orange, and FrancisJoyon’s 90ft tri Idec.

The F-33R then went on to win the newmultihull class of Skandia Cowes Week, with almost 1,000 yachts and 8,000competitors taking part. Six out of theeight races were won, for maximumpoints scored, while a top speed of 24.6knots was recorded.

However, neither the F-32 or F-33 areintended to be specialist racers, the designobject for both being to create roomy, rugged, and very safe maxi sport cruisers. They are still light enough to provide thenecessary load capacity for a good ocean

going capability, while also remainingrealistically trailerable. The F-32 is thus aserious and roomy cruiser, but one thatalso just happens to be very fast.

Design Features:

The F-32 is a brand new ‘state-of-the-art’ design, and all variations come withthe now typical Farrier features such asefficient rotating masts, deepdaggerboards for excellent windwardability and handling, retractable bowpole, easy trailerability, while auxiliarypower can be provided by up to a 20hpoutboard or a lightweight inboard.

In other areas the F-32 represents amajor step forward from all my previousdesigns, with a number of significantadvances, as pioneered by the F-33,These include carbon fibre chainplates, synthetic rigging as standard, a carbonfibre traveller, and a major revision of theFarrier Folding System™.

The folding system now has a moreintegrated structural support system. Thebeam recesses (notches) in the centre hull

deck have been eliminated for a cleanerdeck, (no foot traps) and no interiorintrusion. Folding struts have been sethigher, keeping them further away fromwave tops, and less likely to generate anyspray. To further improve dryness, thebeams were made even slimmer and50mm (22) higher at the outer ends, andreshaped to direct any spray downwards. As a result, the beams are morestreamlined for less drag, and will directany spray down and under the boat.

The inner beam end to main hullconnections are now external, as on the F-33, for easier setup and maintenance, while also giving shorter beams for alower trailering height, and less windageon the road.

The cockpit seating area has beenmoved higher to give better visibilityforward, and more room underneath, butit is still low enough so that one still hasa good sense of security from sitting morein the boat rather than on it, particularlywith aft cabin models.

The overall deck layout is simple, butsophisticated to where the F-32 can easilybe sailed single-handed. All controlscome back to the cockpit, including thehalyards from the rotating mast. Theoptional bow wing has also solved theusual trimaran narrow foredeck problem,by providing additional bow side nettingarea, and an excellent storage place forthe anchor, ready for immediate use.

The F-33 style kick back daggerboardrudder is standard. Kick-up rudders, where the rudder blade can swing back inthe case, have been used successfully onmy designs and others for years. But theycome with one annoying problem - theyare just about impossible to use when

swung back to reduce draft for shallowwater. This makes it difficult to effectivelyuse one of the multihull’s best features -the shallow draft. Daggerboard rudderssolve this problem by lifting vertically, but this one can also kick back for safety.

Interior

Both aft cabin and aft cockpit versionsare available, and berths include single ordouble berth options in the forward cabin, plus convertible double or single optionsin the main cabin. The aft cabin doubleberth has ample sitting headroom, and afoot well can divide it into two separatesingles, with a comfortable seating areaaround the sides. A centre table could alsobe fitted.

A private and completely separate bathroom with shower islocated forward in the main cabin, and is accessed privatelyfrom the forward area.

The several interior layouts available can be mixed andmatched as required, provided designated structural bulkheadsremain as designed. Full size patterns for all internal bulkheadsand most interior panels are included in plans, or these can alsobe obtained as DXF files for CNC cutting of these parts.

Construction

The F-32 is built using the now well proven method ofbuilding the hulls split vertically down the centre, in simplefemale form frames. The supplied full size patterns are onlyused once, there being no need to mark their reverse side andthen flip them over for marking the opposite hull side. Thebuilding frames are instead just flipped around to build theother hull half - much easier and faster - half the work in fact.

Once both hull halves are complete, they are joined downthe centreline, the ideal place for extra reinforcement.Gunwale is no longer a join, and can thus be clean and wellrounded. The considerable time required to later ‘frame up’ forthe deck and cabin is also avoided.

Material options include the Farrier developed vertical foamstripping which offers a significant saving in weight andbuilding time, while the traditional fore and aft strip plankedCedar can still be used if wished.

However, wood boats can be difficult to insure and sell thesedays, so foam core is now preferred and stronglyrecommended. Vertical foam stripping is easily the fastestprocedure, and the advantages apparent from boats alreadybuilt have now made it the primary method. Vertical strips areeasier than the usual fore and aft strips, with much wider, easyto handle short strips, with a massive 75% less glue lines to do,and a much fairer hull.

Other advantages of foam include avoiding the tendency ofwood strips to move with differing humidity levels, and thenow lower cost of foam in many areas. Less expensivepolyester or vinylester resins can also be used, which can be animportant advantage to those with an epoxy allergy.

The connecting beams, and associated hull mounts are madeusing carbon fibre and/or glass, or it will be possible topurchase the beams ready made if wished to save time andmaximise ease of construction. The newly developed beamhull mounts may only be available ready made however. TheFolding System Struts can also be either self made from theplans or purchased ready made.

Plans are comprehensive and many sheets are now in colour. If one wants to build a superb boat, efficiently and quickly, then there is no better way to start than with a set of highlydetailed plans. Farrier plans are simply the best available, andthe F-32 has over 70 extensive computer generated 3-Ddrawings with step by step instructions, to help eliminatehundreds of hours of building or ‘working it out’ time by thebuilder.

Full plans should be ready for release in early 2005, thoughan immediate start is now possible, with both floats and mainhull drawings complete.
