The first call for independence came fromCumberlandCounty –when thecertainty of the approaching conflict came, Cumberland led the Coloniesin calling for a completely independent American nation. On April 22,1776, from the balcony of EffinghamTavern, CarterH.Harrison read theCommittee’s instructions to the county delegates to the State convention:“We therefore, your constituents, instruct you positively to declare for anIndependency, that you solemnly abjure any allegiance to His BritannicMajesty and bid him a good night forever …” The Virginia Conventiondecided to follow Cumberland’s lead, and this resulted in the VirginianResolutions, which were presented to the Continental Congress andembodied in the Declaration of Independence.

TheCivilWar left itsmark on Farmville, with its lastmajor battle at nearbySailor’s Creek. Lee retreated directly through the town, and theConfederates crossed and then attempted to burn the railroad's impressiveHigh Bridge, a 120-foot-high, nearly half-mile-long span across theAppomattox River. The bridge and other sites along Lee’s Retreat are partof the state’s CivilWarTrails.

Farmville is also home to some key players in the early fight for civil rights;its citizens’ crusade for equal rights in education drewMartin Luther King,Jr. and other national leaders to visit our area. The Robert Russa MotonHigh School, site of the 1951 student strike, is a National HistoricLandmark, a civil rights museum, and the centerpiece of Virginia’s CivilRights in Education Heritage Trail, honoring the efforts of local studentsand citizenswho paved theway for integrated public education nationwide.

After 250 years, our area continues to exemplify all that is best about theAmerican way of life.

Seven historic buildings and two historic districts in the County of PrinceEdward are listed on the Virginia Register of Historic Places:

• Briery Church was constructed in 1760 and was the first structure inPrince Edward to be listed on theVirginia Historic Register. (Route 747– Briery Church Road)

• Debtor’s Prison, a small, solid log jail for debtors was built in 1787. (Route15 – Farmville Road)

• Old Prince Edward County Clerk’s Office, now known as WorshamClerk’s Office, served as the first clerk’s office at Prince EdwardCourthouse. (Route 15 – Farmville Road)

• Falkland, a large, framed plantation house was built in 1815 by theWatkins family, important figures in the early history of Prince EdwardCounty and Hampden-Sydney College. (Route 632 – Falkland Road)

• Buffalo Presbyterian Church, 1804

• Farmville Historic District, 1830-1930

any Virginia public university. Its mission, infused throughout thecurriculum and extracurricular life, is the preparation of citizen leaders.

Founded in 1839 as the Farmville Female Seminary Association, theinstitution had a series of names over its early history, becomingLongwoodCollege in 1949 and turning fully co-educational in 1976. In 2002, Gov.Mark Warner signed legislation designating Longwood a university. In2007, Longwood began competing in NCAA Division I athletics. Theuniversity is a member of the Big South Conference.

Longwood students are known for their commitment to campusleadership in extracurricular life. There are more than 125 campusorganizations, including active programs in sports and the arts, and avibrant, service-oriented Greek system (four national sororities werefounded at Longwood). Most students live on or close to the university’sbucolic central campus, which – combined with the relatively small scaleof about 1,100 students in each entering class – contributes to the look andfeel of a private college with the cost and scope of a public institution.

President W. Taylor Reveley IV, who took office in June 2013, hasemphasized a strong grounding in the liberal arts and sciences as the heartof the academic enterprise and an essential element of the curriculum forall students, but many students major in professional programs such asbusiness, athletic training and nursing.

President Reveley is Longwood’s 26th president. His father, W. TaylorReveley III, is president of the College of William & Mary, and hisgrandfather, W. Taylor Reveley II, was president of Hampden-Sydneyfrom 1963-77.

Academically, Longwood takes pride in its historical roots – exceptional and widely honored programs inteacher preparation – and today its excellence has expanded across a comprehensive curriculum.

Longwood is accredited by theCommission of Colleges of theSouthern Association of Colleges andSchools to award bachelor and master’sdegrees, among many otheraccreditations for individual collegesand programs and is home to theLongwood Center for the Visual Arts, which is accredited by the AmericanAlliance of Museums.

One of the remarkable facts ofLongwood’s history is its closeconnection to two transcendenthistorical events. The Civil War endedpractically at one end of campus, withsome of the last fighting of the CivilWar taking place at High Bridge, a fewmiles outside town. Nearly a centurylater, themodern civil rightsmovementarguably began, also just a few stepsfrom campus, with the strike bystudents atMotonHigh School againstconditions at their segregated school. Those students eventually became oneof five groups of plaintiffs in the Brown vs. Board of Education lawsuit.Today, Moton is a National Historic Landmark and award-winningmuseum working hand in hand with Longwood.

The Heart of Your Adventure (THOYA) collaboration ismaking great things happen in the area! No matter what yoursense of “Adventure” may be – the Farmville Community hasit ready and waiting for you!

THOYA is composed of representatives from: The FarmvilleArea Chamber of Commerce, The Town of Farmville, PrinceEdward County Tourism, and Farmville DowntownPartnership. In early 2015 they proudly had a LOVEworkssculpture constructed for all citizens and visitors to enjoy anduse for taking fun photos. This is the 40th LOVE sculpture ofits kind in Virginia, and we certainly think it is the BEST!

Farmville’s sculpture depicts the High Bridge, which was thesite of one of the last battles of the American Civil War, withtrains from both the Union and Confederacy poised on itstracks. It includes an inlaid 1918 Sanborn Fire Insurance mapreproduction of downtown Farmville. It was constructed oflocally hewn and crafted materials and assembled on site.

THE LAST STAND: e Civil War Comes to Farmville

Before Appomattox, there was Farmville. Still reeling from theBattle of Sailor’s Creek, General Robert E. Lee and his men ingray moved westward to this town in the Heart of Virginia tobe ready for a last stand against the forces of General UlyssesS. Grant.

The Last Stand: The Civil War Comes to Farmville transportedall who attend the Sesquicentennial event in March, 2015,back to that day in 1865 when soldiers from both sides of theconflict converged on this south central Virginia town en routeto the final surrender. We met Generals Lee and Grant andthe men who fought in Blue and Gray. A walking tour of sitescentral to this pivotal day between High Bridge andAppomattox was rolled out for the first time. Then there werethe women who survived the valiant last days as they buriedtheir dead in the Confederate Cemetery.

Our LOVEworks sculpture in Downtown Farmville, located just off the High Bridge Trail, beside Green Front Furniture’s Building #10 on Main Street.
