and the Four Corners area. Relocating can be a difficult and

stressful time, but hopefully, we can help make it an enjoyable

process. We are so proud of Farmington and all that we have

to share with our guests.

If you are a first-time visitor, let me highlight some of the

attractions in our city and the Four Corners region. you can

find out more about these at our Chamber of Commerce

located in our beautiful downtown area at 100 West Broad-

way. Some favorites are the Anasazi ruins of Chaco Canyon,

the Aztec or Salmon Ruins, Navajo Lake State Park, the

riverine trails along Animas River, Gateway Museum and the

Farmington Public Library. Also available for you enjoyment

is our nationally acclaimed Piñon Hills Golf Course and the

Outdoor Summer Dinner/Theater at the Lions Wilderness Park Amphitheater. We are

host to the Connie Mack World Series baseball tournament played here annually in

Ricketts Stadium. Farmington is rich in history and offers much in the way of cultural

diversity.

Welcome to Farmington!

Chairman’s Welcome

As the chairman of the Board of Directors of the

Farmington Chamber of Commerce, I welcome you

to my hometown!

Farmington is one of the Southwest’s secret jewels.

We have tons of activities year round and as a visitor or

someone relocating here you will find something to fit any

interest.

My family homesteaded here in the late 1800s, coming

to this area as farmers and cattlemen. They settle on the west

side of town and had apple orchards and pears. They also

raised cattle and had range up the La Plata Highway and,

in the summer, moved the cows north of Dolores, Colo.

Farmington was well known for its fruit, and we still have

a few orchards in the area. Every summer we have a

Grower’s Market where local produce is sold.

When I grew up in Farmington it was a smaller community, and as we have grown

we have never given up that sense of community. Our community has always come

together to take care of each other and strive always to look for ways to improve our

quality of life.

We have abundant sunshine, moderate temperatures and distinct four seasons. We are

a shopping hub for a hundred mile radius. We have theater productions, art galleries,

museums, golf courses, fishing, parks for skateboarding, lots of parks, music festivals,

Frisbee golf, four wheeling, camping, water sports, baseball, soccer, football, basketball,

volleyball, etc.

I am very prejudiced and wouldn’t live anywhere else, so if you get to town, look me

up and I’ll share my love of Farmington!

Shortly after Bruce and Marj Black moved to Farmington, N.M., in

the early 1980s, Bruce had a vision.

Seeing the incredible views in and around Farmington, the idea of

having an office in a cave began to take shape in Bruce’s mind.

“As a geologist, Bruce has always loved the rocks and vistas of

the cliffs around Farmington,” Marj said. “He designed the cave as

he envisioned it and had it blasted out of the side of a mesa. He

made sure that the stratigraphy was such that the interior would be

solid and safe.”

That was in 1981, Marj said, but after it was excavated into the

Ojo Alamo Sandstone, the cave remained vacant for a number of

years, until the Black’s son, also

named Bruce, returned from

serving his country in the Air

Force.

“Together, they finished the

interior, which was a great ‘fa-

ther-son’ project,” Marj said.

“However, Bruce (the elder) de-

cided that it was going to be

difficult to have his geologic

clients come down to the cave,

so it never served as an office.”

A repor ter from the local

newspaper wrote a story about

the cave, which generated much

interest – especially from The

Associated Press. “We soon received numerous calls from folks all

around the country, asking if they could come and stay in it,” Marj

said. “Thus, it became a Bed and Breakfast Cave. We’ve had visitors

from all over the world and many repeat guests. They write pages in

the guest book detailing their delight with the accommodations and

the experience of being in the cave.”

While visitors may inhabit the inside of the cave, they enjoy their

own “visitors.” Ring tailed cats, bobcats, raccoons, chipmunks and

squirrels – along with the golden eagles that nest on the cliffs –

make the outside of the cave as memorable as the inside.

“As a carpenter, it was beautiful to see the work it took to make

this place happen,” wrote a recent guest. “From the stairs cut into

the stone, to the rustic cabinets, everything is a pleasure to the eye.”

Kokopelli’s Cave is located just two miles west of Farmington, a

short drive from the many attractions in the Four Corners, including

Aztec Ruins and Salmon Ruins, Mesa Verde National Park, Chaco

Cultural National Historic Park, Shiprock, Canyon de Chelly National

Monument and Shiprock.

Sportsmen and women will enjoy the biking and hiking trails

located in and around Farmington, the city’s popular Aquatic Center,

and the golf courses that attract golfers from around the country.

The Quality Waters of the San Juan River is about one hour away for

those who want to enjoy some of the best fishing in the world.

The 1,650-square-foot, one-bedroom cave home is furnished with

plush carpeting, Southwestern style furniture and accents, hot and

cold running water, a nicely ap-

pointed kitchen with microwave

and washer/dryer, a cascading

waterfall style shower and a flag-

stone hot tub.

Meals are not served at

Kokopelli’s Cave, but the kitchen

is stocked with a variety of cereals

and pastries, milk, orange juice

and coffee and tea. A gas barbecue

grill is offered on the flagstone

porch, where guests are invited

to cook hamburgers, steak or

chicken while watching the abun-

dance of wildlife that shares the

spectacular site.

The cave itself is 70 feet below the surface, with the entrance

located in the cliff face, which is reached by walking down a sloping

path and intermittent steps, cut into the sandstone along the pathway.

There is a short ladder at the bottom of the path with three wooden

steps that take you to the flagstone porch and the entrance to the

cave.

Over the years, Kokopelli’s cave has become known worldwide,

Marj Black said. “The cave has been featured in many travel magazines

and television programs and was named the third most unusual bed

and breakfast in the world, and was named in the top 10 of the

nation’s bed and breakfasts,” she said with justifiable pride.

For an experience of a lifetime and to make reservations at

Kokopelli’s Cave, call the manager, Gayle Davis, at 505.860.3812 or

The Aztec Ruins National Mon-

ument lies along the Animas River

in Aztec, N.M., and is known for

its ancestral Puebloan heritage.

The monument provides visitors

an intimate opportunity to explore

ancient ruins built by the Ancient

Puebloans (Anasazi) in the 1100s.

Aztec Ruins features ceremonial,

public, and storage structures as

well as the “Great Kiva,” the oldest

and largest reconstructed Kiva in

North America.

A self-guided 700-yard walk

winds through the rooms and kivas

built by the Ancient Puebloan peo-

ple. The guide combines modern

traditional American Indian perspectives. At the end of the trail is

the Great Kiva, a 40-foot diameter semi-subterranean structure

that was the central religious site of the complex.

The monument marks the largest ancestral Pueblo community in

the Animas River Valley and

preserves incredible historic

buildings of residence and

worship, roadways, and ar-

tifacts of the ancestral

Pueblo of the 11th through

13th centuries.

Many artifacts have been

found that help visitors un-

derstand how the community

developed and changed

over its 200-year history.

The homes are built on

a terrace that overlooks

the Animas River. The river

was crucial to the survival

of the community because it irrigated their crops of corn, beans,

and squash.

There are a number of tours and activities during the year at

the ruins.

The public had an opportunity to learn more about protecting

the environment and what it means to go green during the 9th

annual “Footprints on the Ear th” on April 20 at Aztec Ruins

National Monument.

As a way to celebrate

Earth Day, there were more

than 30 local businesses

and organizations that set

up booths at the event,

which encouraged the pub-

lic to interact and ask

questions about the envi-

ronment.

Many of the booths pro-

vided hands-on activities

for families.

There also was a per-

formance by the Haak’u

Buffalo Dance Group from

Acoma Pueblo, whose traditions involve prayers for rain and

maintaining balance in the natural world.

In August of 1999, Marcia and David Arnold discovered a small

community in northwest New Mexico, near Navajo Lake State Park

and not far from Farmington.

The overgrown, unsightly acreage was in Turley, a family community

that remains unincorporated but tightly knit. The land, “protected”

from trespassers with a barbed wire gate – and an old, faded “For

Sale” sign – beckoned Marcia and David. Seeing beyond the weeds

and the trash, the Arnolds saw beauty and serenity in the landscape

and decided this land needed to be theirs.

Marcia and David come from families who understand the importance

– and the rewards – of hard work and they

knew resilience and elbow grease would be

needed to make this land productive and

profitable. And, because the couple is dedicated

to family values, they wanted to make this

business a family business – and they wanted

it to be a winery.

“It’s tough to determine the best part of

owning and operating a family business,”

Marcia said. “A winery/vineyard concept, with

its many facets, is a definite opportunity and

a challenge. What may have been the most

important factor to David and myself is that

everyone would have the same goals and

desires for the business. The intensity and

passion would be mirrored, and just the

closeness, respect and support we’d have

for one another would support the obsta-

cles.”

“To have our kids and grandchildren near and still be able to make

a living together is truly the American dream,” Marcia added.

Challenges and opportunities have provided themselves to the

family, but the Wines of the San Juan has become a popular winery to

the locals who frequent it and to the visitors who discover it.

“There have been many challenges to the winery business since

the concept was developed 14 years ago,” Marcia explained. “The

San Juan River Valley isn’t ‘Napa Valley’ for growing grapes by any

means, but it is beautiful. We established our experimental vineyard

by planting 26 varieties of wine grapes, trying to determine what

would grow best.”

The frosts that are part of the spring season in the valley have de-

stroyed many of the grapes the family hoped to grow. “We keep

striving to improve our varietals by educating ourselves, putting in a

weather station connecting us with NMSU – New Mexico State

University – and replanting with more cold-hardy vines,” Marcia said.

The Arnolds grow about six acres of grapes, with the winemakers

using the grapes in combination with other purchased grapes because

of the small quantity of batches grown in their own vineyards. Wines

of the San Juan produces limited case wines from the grapes grown

by the family. The winery crushes about 42 tons of grapes each year.

But it isn’t just great wine the Wines of the San Juan offers. The

Arnold family has created an oasis in an area

that was once considered an abandoned plot

of land. The family has milled logs to create

the homes they live in and the buildings they

work in. Doors, mirrors, paintings and music

are provided by local artists and the peacocks,

geese and turkeys join the cats, dogs and

other wildlife to create an atmosphere that

encourages visitors to sit, enjoy the wine, and

bask in the beauty of the winery.

If you’re looking for something fun to do,

the Wines of the San Juan offer plenty of that,

too. Every April, the family hosts an “After Tax

Spring Fling” that features a 5k and 10k race.

In June, it’s Ducks for Bucks, an event that

has little rubber duckies floating down a

stream, raising money for children suffering

from Neimann-Pick disease. Throughout the

summer, locals and visitors enjoy music every

Sunday at the winery and the last weekend in September brings the

Annual Harvest Festival and Great Grape Stomp. Any given weekend

can find another event to attend, with music to enjoy, arts and crafts

to check out and that great wine to enjoy.

“The San Juan County community has been a huge asset to the

continued success of Wines of the San Juan,” Marcia said. “We can’t

express how honored we have felt by being part of such supportive,

energizing and uplifting people. We strive to continue to build the

trust and quality attachment our family and community of friends

have built into the business for all to share.”

While those who live near the winery are loyal customers and

cheerleaders for the Arnold family and Wines of the San Juan, the

winery’s reputation has grown to include fans from all

over the United States.

A visit to the Reviews of Wines of the San Juan

website offered the following reviews from visitors in

2012:

“We have visited this winery several times on trips

and always enjoyed the wine and the company. The

setting is beautiful,” stated a visitor from Scholls, Ore.

“We have visited a lot of wineries in California and the

wine here certainly matches anything we have tasted,”

wrote a visitor form Wrightwood, Calif. “I loved Girls Are

Meaner and brought home three bottles. Unfortunately, I

have already drank two of them and I can’t get any

more. Guess I need to drive back to New Mexico soon!”

“My father and I were out at the San Juan River for a

week of fly fishing (the best trout stream in America)

when we spotted this little winery. Serendipity is the best

word I can use to describe the experience. Between the

two of us, we have been to Napa, Burgundy and Bordeaux

regions of France, and the Douro region of Portugal.

My father and I walked away saying how charming this

little gem was and promised ourselves we would linger a

little longer on our next fly fishing trip,” wrote a Boston,

Mass., visitor.

“I must say I’ve never been quite so into one set

winery as I have Wines of the San Juan,” wrote a visitor

from Corpus Christi, Texas. “Each wine has its own

beautiful, palate opening flavor and the vineyard itself is

beautiful. And if you’re a Merlot fan – Serendipity Merlot.

Call them. Order it. Pronto. BEST I’ve ever tried and I ab-

solutely love, love, love it.”

And a visitor from the western slope of neighboring

Colorado said, “I’m by no stretch of the imagination a

wine expert, nor even a wine lover, but I greatly enjoyed

a recent visit (to the Wines of the San Juan). There’s just

a lovely, peaceful sense of place here – it just speaks

New Mexico – with peacocks squawking in the garden

under the shade of tall cottonwoods, a fountain bubbling

near a latilla enclosed patio, amid interesting garden folk

art. I was hooked by the creativity of the names of some

of their wine and the artwork on the bottles. What’s not

to love about “Girls Are Meaner” – Gewürztraminer?”

Located just a short drive from Farmington at 233

Hwy. 511 near Blanco, N.M., a visit to the Wines of the

San Juan won’t just provide great boutique wine from a

wonderful family winery, your visit will introduce you to

the beauty of the New Mexico part of the Four Corners,

find you chatting up the family and learning all about the

grapes, the wines and the area, and wishing you had

discovered this gem of the Four Corners much, much

sooner!

“We have a jewel in our backyard,” Trout Snouts Angling fishing

guide, Jeff Massey said. “The problem is that hardly anyone from the

area comes and fishes the river.”

San Juan River Outfitter guide (and younger brother to Jeff) T.J.

concurs, “Most people have never experienced it…it must be too

close.”

Meanwhile, Jeremiah Spradling (friend and colleague to the brothers)

of High Plains Anglers expresses his frustrations, “You talk to folks in

town and they have no idea what it is all about.”

Sitting down and talking to some of the most experienced guides

on the San Juan River, one could only come away from the conversation

with a sense of bewilderment as to why 95 percent of the clientele

that fishes the San Juan River come from out of town.

The San Juan River stretches from Navajo Dam in Southwestern

Colorado until it reaches the Colorado River at Lake Powell some 380

miles away. The San Juan is the major water supply for the Four

Corners region of New Mexico, Southern Utah and parts of Northeastern

Arizona. The importance of the river as a water supply to the area is

paramount, but the impact it has to economy of northwest New

Mexico in other areas cannot go unnoticed.

“The San Juan brings in millions of dollars of revenue to the local

economy,” states Jeff Massey. “With fishermen flying in, staying at

hotels, eating at local restaurants and using guides, it cannot be un-

derstated to how much business it brings in.”

In fact, even when the local, state and federal economies are slow,

the fishing never seams to be negatively impacted. “This fishing on

the San Juan will stay the same no matter the economy,” explains

Spradling. “The fishing will survive…even if the local economies (oil

and gas) do not.”

The reason is the unique circumstances that make the San Juan

River the most revered destination for trout fly fishing in the United

States. With roughly 4 miles of controlled water flowing out of the

bottom of Navajo Dam, the cold-water temperatures and controlled

environment allow for a multitude of insect hatchings…supplying the

area with the perfect set of circumstances for world-class trout fish-

ing.

“There isn’t ever a bad time of the year to fish on the San Juan,”

explains TJ. “We won’t fish at the end of May for a week due to a

scheduled water release from the dam, but other than that it is good all

year.”

“We guide anywhere from 160 to 200 days a year on the river,”

adds Spradling. “We fish nymph 12 months of the year and fish with dry

flies in the summer and early fall months.”

Taking advanTage of The JeWel

So many questions remain for the area residents of San Juan

County: Why are people travelling from all over the world to experience

our world class “Quality Waters” and locals aren’t taking advantage of

this? and how can you get involved without any equipment or knowledge

of the sport of fly-fishing?

“That is why you hire a guide,” comments Jeff. “We have all the

equipment for people to use and we can give you the knowledge to be

successful.”

The relationship built with a local guide will also be beneficial to the

person who wants to further their fishing interests.

“guides will also tell you what equipment you need, where to fish,

and where to park so that you enjoy it on your own,” adds TJ.

While the sport of fly-fishing seems like a daunting endeavor to

someone that has never held a fly rod…understand that you have to

start somewhere, and that somewhere is with a phone call to a local

guide.

“it is easier to guide a novice who has never touched a fly rod then

a guy who fishes all the time,” explains TJ. “The reason is the novice

has no bad habits and i can teach them the proper technique to cast

and land fish. The hardest guide trips are the people that fish all the

time, are set in their ways and are not open to doing it the proper way.”

The moral of this story is that the local population of San Juan

County needs to realize the gem that they have in their backyard…and

to start taking advantage of it. By hiring a local guide, you will learn the

proper way to fish, have immediate success and have a wealth of

knowledge and experience at your disposal. There is no reason not to

at least give it a try.

“We have been fishing this river for over 20 years,” explains

Spradling. “We couldn’t imagine doing anything other than this. fishing

isn’t about catching the most fish; it is about the entire experience it

offers you. guiding gives me the opportunity to share the experiences

and allows me to teach them how to fish better.”

What do you envision when you think of the best destination for

a leisurely vacation?

Some people dream of white sand beaches with a crystal clear

ocean expanding into the horizon, or perhaps an isolated cabin

hidden in the mountainous forests.

What about Navajo Dam?

Individuals who have worked in the Navajo Dam community for

years claim that the number of people traveling to the area has

been rising.

Snaking around the mesas of the Navajo Dam area is the San

Juan River. Considered one of the best rivers in the country for fly

fishing, many fly fishers from all over the world travel to the river

to catch the rich supply of trout.

“There has been a big increase in tourism over the years from

Texas and Arizona. I have noticed the people coming out on

guided trips are a lot of beginners who have never fished before.

The economy might be bad, but fishing is still doing fairly well,”

said Nicole Bridge, lodge manager and fishing guide at Fishheads

San Juan River Lodge. “A lot of people are still willing to spend a lot of

money on fly fishing. We are the newest business in the area, besides the

hot dog stand down the street.”

The Angler’s Heart Bed and Breakfast opened its doors in 1998. Since

then, Joyce Dykstra, manager at the bed and breakfast, has had guests

from all over the country and even from Spain, Italy, Germany, Venezuela,

and the Netherlands. “Typically, it’s the fly fishing that has brought in the

tourists,” she said. “There have also been more activities than what I have

recalled in the past. Boating has become more popular.”

While the popularity of fly fishing in the area is escalating, businesses

within the Navajo Dam community have flourished over the years. Bed and

breakfasts, fly fishing shops, and restaurants are springing up due to the

growth of tourism.

“There has been some renewed interest by shop owners and it seems

like that has expanded and people seem to be pleased with what is

available here at the moment. I would say last year not so much, but I

think this year has shown some great changes and people are more

interested in coming to the area again,” explained Dykstra.

Larry Johnson, owner and president of Soaring Eagle Lodge, feels fly

fishers travel to the area because of its convenient location. “All of the

customers can get into Four Corners in one flight, usually,” he said.

Johnson added that fly fishing in other parts of the country, such as

Alaska, may be a challenging destination to venture to because of its

isolated location. “If you go to Alaska, it’s beautiful, but it’s a journey, and

expensive.”

Johnson recognizes the beauty surrounding the San Juan River. And

who wouldn’t? Mesas with hints of red and purple tower over the snake-

like river, and as fly fishers submerge their legs into this cold river,

because of the water’s clarity they can see the fish swimming downstream.

Having the Navajo Dam community only minutes away from the river is

also convenient for lodging and dining.

“It is a world class destination. It’s the quality of the fishery itself

because it’s well managed by New Mexico Game and Fish. It is the perfect

habitat for trout because of the cold water that flows from the Navajo

Lake,” said Jay Walden, manager at Abe’s Motel and Fly Shop, which

opened in 1958. “The river is a huge resource for the area and it brings

in a lot of money for the local economy as well as the state economy, such

as the goods we sell, licenses, as well as taxes on all the food and

groceries, and fishing supplies.”

Although Walden believes the fly fishing tourism helps the economy, he

feels it has been slower since the 1990s. “It has to be because of the

recession. I noticed we were getting a lot of people coming from farther

away, but now a lot of our traffic seems to be more regional; more people

that can do the day’s drive rather than fly,” He said.

Alex Arnold, event coordinator at Wines of the San Juan nine miles

south of Navajo Dam, said tourism has picked up at their business. “I

think the ambiance of the whole place is so amazing to the people who

come out. When they come out here they get to experience things that

they wouldn’t normally experience anywhere else,” she said. “The tourists

come from all over the country and overseas.”

Arnold mentioned that most people come to the area for fishing and

camping. She added the winery recently had tourists from Holland.

The businesses in Navajo Dam work together to promote one another

and to encourage tourists to experience the entire area. “We all kind of

support each other. If they have people in lodges, then they send them

down here to the winery,” Arnold said.

Within the small Navajo Dam community, tucked away and unknown to

many, rich history and expertise are prominent. So for the beach-lovers

who enjoy lying on the sands with a margarita in one hand, or the trail-

seekers who travel to mountains to find the perfect hiking path that is en-

compassed by pine trees reaching to the skies, maybe venturing to the

San Juan River to experience the local businesses and learn the traits of

fly fishing isn’t such a bad idea. You wouldn’t want to miss out on the

adventures Navajo Dam has to offer.

The San Juan County Fair has been providing family entertainment and great fun to the

residents of San Juan County and the Four Corners for more than 100 years.

From a carnival that provides thrills and chills to a Junior Livestock Sale that provides

fair exhibitors with cash that is often used to further their educations, the San Juan County

Fair is the largest single county fair in New Mexico.

This year’s fair will be held Aug. 5-10 at McGee Park.

Each year, the few days before the fair opens to the public, hundreds of residents

arrive at McGee Park to enter their livestock or other exhibits, hoping for a ribbon and/or

cash prizes. Whether it’s the preschooler who has entered a craft for the first time or an

artist who has a history of entering art for years, the smiles and the joy in receiving a

ribbon is the same.

Families bring their campers to the park, where they live for the week of the fair,

making it easier for kids who are showing livestock to feed and groom their animals every

day. The San Juan County Fair brings families, friends and neighbors together where they

support each exhibitor at the fair, catch up with each other’s lives, and enjoy the family at-

mosphere the San Juan County Fair Board is determined to provide.

San Juan County Fair has provided it for more than 100 years

“A county fair is supposed to be where families can go, enjoy the livestock shows, the music, the

entertainment and the exhibits, but not break the family’s budget,” said Billy Huish, who is the vice

president of the fair board and who has been attending the San Juan County Fair for almost 50

years. “The fair board is focused on having a safe and fun environment for families while providing

exciting things for them to do.”

While the Junior Livestock Sale is the highlight of the fair, with sales that match the New Mexico

State Fair’s sale, the San Juan County Fair is about more than just the animals in the show rings. An

Outhouse Race, a barbecue cook off, karaoke, a trade show, a horse and dog show, petting zoo, a

pie eating contest, a goat costume contest and kids racing midget race cars in the McGee Park

Coliseum are offered, along with great entertainment. Pam Tillis and the Bellamy Brothers are the

headliners for the 2013 fair, and it will be standing room only for those great county music artists.

Not that anyone will be sitting, however -- when the music starts, the audience stands to join in the

singing and the dancing begins!

NEWLY RENOVATED

If it’s the fair parade, carnival rides, the animals, the entertainment or the exhibits that brings

families to the fair, it’s the food that keeps them happy! Ask any regular fair goer what their favorite

fair food is, and you’ll get as many answers as there are fair vendors. Curly fries, roasted corn,

funnel cake, lemonade, fried catfish, specialty coffee, Navajo tacos, Frito pie, and cotton candy are

consumed and enjoyed by almost everyone who comes to the fair.

It takes the fair board 11 months to plan each county fair. And the members of the San Juan

County Fair Board are all volunteers – each of whom takes a week of their vacation to be at McGee

Park and oversee the fair every year.

The members of the 2013 San Juan County Fair Board are Ben Hazelwood, president; Billy

Huish, vice president; Lucille Jones, secretary; Darrin Church, treasurer; Gwen Gonser, Blaine

Williams, David Stark, Shanna Webb, Kim Martinez, Brian Perry, Clifton Wages, Richard Reilley and

Dorothy Nobis.

What started as a boxing club for boys in the

1950s is now a multi-program, diverse organization

that serves more than 1,900 young people in the

Farmington area.

Founded in 1960, the Boys and Girls Club celebrated

its 50th anniversary in September of 2010.

“It’s amazing to see where the club is today and

where it all started,” said Ed Marcum, who served as

the club’s director from 1961 until the mid-1970s,

when the facility was located in the old American

Legion Quonset building. “My time there was very

enjoyable. It was great to be a part of something

that helped young people out.”

Today, the Farmington Boys and Girls Club is

located at 1925 Positive Way, formerly 1825 E. 19th

St., not far from the Quonset hut site that served as

the club’s home from 1961 to 1997.

The current 31,000-square-foot building opened

in October 1997 at a cost of $3 million – the result

of a bond issue that the community overwhelmingly

supported.

“We couldn’t do everything we do without the

community’s help,” Club President and Chief Professional

Officer Benedikte Whitman said. “From all of the vol-

unteers to all of the financial support, Farmington

has been very involved in this club through the years.

I also think the club is a source of pride for the entire

community.”

When the Boys Club of Farmington first opened in

1960 it was located at 214 W. Animas St. It was a

time of major change for Farmington as the oil and

gas boom drastically increased the city’s population.

In turn, many local children and teens were in need

of a safe place to spend free time. Dedicated

community members then stepped in through the

help of a committed Board of Directors, who saw an

opportunity to move the club to the old American

Legion hall location in 1961.

Over the years, the club developed into much

more, providing a variety of sports and other activities

for Farmington’s youth. Girls weren’t actually allowed

in the club until 1968, but many remember that

mandate not stopping them from getting through

the doors. By the 1970s, the club had introduced

girls’ activities such as basketball and cheerleading,

and by 1989 the name of the club was changed to

the Boys and Girls Club of Farmington.

“While the club here is 50 years old, the organ-

ization itself turned 100 in 2006,” Whitman said.

“It used to be enough for a club to offer just

spor ts and games rooms, but that’s not the case

any more. Today, clubs are much more extensive

in addressing the whole child’s needs.”

“I really want the club to be the center of the

youth community, and I think we’ve done well,”

Whitman added.

Whitman has worked for the Farmington club

for the past decade and has scores of fond

memories of her time as director.

Whitman is proud of the club’s role in helping

to address the dropout rate.

“Nationwide, between 30 and 33 percent of

students drop out. We have classes weekly here to

help address the problem. People who drop out

early earn less money, have more social problems

and their health status is even about 10 years

behind those with a high school diploma. We’re

trying to help bridge that gap with our programs.”

Marcum is reminded of the club’s legacy often

when he sees former members as he runs errands

around town.

“I can’t tell you how many people who used to

be involved with the club have introduced their

children to me. People realized back in the 1960s

that we were trying to help kids out. Over the

years, because of some really great people, the

club grew to what it is today,” Marcum added.
